Wanted to share my observation, so I made this. Apparently you can't post something like that in r/linguistics as they require a link to an article? What if I just made it up?

Question Email resource to help me with my linguistic assignment

Chinese international students and other English-speaking university students around the world:

My linguistics course requires collecting some group of real-life data. If you have emails between you and your professors/TA/RA, I'd be very interested in seeing how you express requests and inquiries politely in those messages. If possible, please send me screenshots of your emails via private message. You may blur any personal information or course details, but please keep the content of the requests and inquiry intact.

Thank you so much

Article How many words do you need to read a language?

Hey all, I made this fun tool that simulates what reading in english is like depending on how many words you know, it swaps "unknown" words for gibberish and chooses which ones to swap out based off of their frequency in the language

Its a loose approximate ofc but I thought it was a fun little visual

Discussion Fair warning: Outlook is phasing out "of."

Post image
10 Upvotes

As though we needed MORE reasons to hate Outlook. (Users know.)

Frustration edit: I wrote a quick example sentence during my lunch at work, including a second "of" which I'll admit sounds a little awkward in context.

But Outlook suggests this EVERY TIME. It could say "Look at all of those chickens." 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆 Full stop. Still tries to change EVERY instance of "all of" to "all," context notwithstanding.

Question Guess my native languages from the hints!! (Easy)

the two besides English!!!

- Due to conflict, a lot of people came to other countries from their homeland. These languages are both Slavic.

- There’s a city in the USA full of people who speak this language but if I say what, it will probably give it away and I also live near this city but not in it…

Video I turned Arabic roots into a slot machine-style learning game

Hi everyone!

I'm Alaa, an Arabic language educator, and I've been working on a personal project called Rooto.

I've noticed that Arabic learners often struggle with memorizing vocabulary without understanding how words are connected through roots and patterns.

So I created Rooto, an interactive web app inspired by a slot machine. With every spin, you discover an Arabic root, a word pattern, a derived word, its English meaning, and an example sentence showing how the word is used in context.

The idea is to make learning Arabic a little more playful and engaging!

Here's a quick video of how it works.

Try it here: https://rooto.app

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!
