Progress Post After a year
One time I saw Luis posted in a response. "All road leads to Rome (gains)." It's true for me!
I went from 72kg to 66kg (4 months) and now to 70kg (8 months).
I started my first cut with ketogains. Had a lot of confusion (reddit wiki suck ass on phone) and made a lot of noise... then eventually realised that most of my question doesn't matter that much.
What mattered was progressive overload, consistent gym, calories tracking, and enough protein. Everything else are nice to haves.
Sticking to Ketogains where I just eat enough meat + protein shake + anything else with volume and without carbs cuts a lot of noise. It also helped me look into and understand just enough nutrition knowledge to make it work for myself too. Adequate Potassium is a big one.
That and sticking to a weight lifting plan. It seems that if you get a reasonable one that hits big moves consistently, all of them aren't that different to me (yet). What made it work was tracking the numbers and making sure I try to hit the same number next week (and that's why its important to stick to the same program. It has to be repeatable).
I have to come clean that I stopped ketogains protocol halfway, but the lessons about nutrition remained. I did a second shorter cut without it, and my weight goes down slower despite similar deficit numbers (and there are much more noise from water weight on day to day basis). That looks like a very compelling anecdote that ketogains protocol helps. It's just that calories counting and adequate protein will always be the bigger deciding factor.
I am almost back to the same weight where I started, but my waist never got any bigger while my lifts and chest size and shoulder width keeps going up. Abs are there (not super shredded but it's good enough). Life is good. Don't stop lifting and count calories like it's your religion!
P.s. I'm still in beginner phase of lifting, strictly speaking, and the above is anecdotal and worked for me. I am also 30 this year so time is still on my side. Your mileage will vary.
P.p.s. why did I post this? I felt like a fool for a lot of post I made here, but even a fool can get jacked after enough consistency. Maybe it's validation seeking, but also I want more people to see the light that tracking nutrition and lifts solves so many problems, and Ketogains is a good way to start doing it because it narrows your option down to better ones on average.
