Food and Recipes Coffee help?
Pre-keto I'd have maybe a quarter cup of milk in my coffee. I decided to switch to the coffee mate french vanilla zero sugar creamer, and I was loving it until recently. I kind of can't stand it now? When I did keto years back, I remember putting cream in my coffee and I didn't love it, so I just put milk and used it as my carb allowance. I don't particularly want to do that this time. I want my carb allowance for my food.
So coffee lovers, what do you do? Is there a better way to add cream to coffee?

Just drink it black. After a few days you'll forget about it. Helps to have decent coffee.

I wish that was true . Switched to black and after a year still wasn't my favorite and we buy very good coffee. I go back and forth now but I love my heavy cream

This. I used to add carb-free almond milk, but now that I only drink 1 to 2 cups a day, I don’t feel like opening a whole bottle just for that. I realized I was only adding the milk to lower the temperature of the coffee (now I just wait a little while instead).

Salted butter for me in my strong black coffee.

I have a couple of thoughts on this. Once you're adapted to keto, your taste changes. Many people find that previous sweets that they had loved suddenly taste too sweet or even bad to them. It's a function of our brains settling down and not perceiving those as rewarding any more. That's good thing actually. Pro tip. If you shake a dash of salt into your coffee, it counteracts the bitterness. Sounds odd but it works. I use almond milk in my coffee. It doesn't give that same creamy feel like, but it does suffice. Heavy whipping cream is also keto friendly, and delicious in coffee, but it is cslorie dense and easy to over do it calories wise. I sometimes mix up my own "creamer" which is mostly almond milk and a few splashes of heavy cream. I put that in a little condiment container so I can use it conveniently. You could add vanilla and a sweetner of your choice if you wish. There are also other brands of zero sugar flavor shots, so you could experiment with those.

Agree. Food/drink that was sweet before now tastes sickly sweet to me.
Real cream in my coffee.5

Hint: add a little bit of collagen to your coffee. It gives back that dairy texture, adds zero flavor, and extra points for a little protein added to your day as well. And if you steam or froth milk for lattes, collagen helps almond milk to foam better too!

u/loripainter12345 9h ago
Ohhh thanks for the tip. I don't have any collagen powder, but I'll look into it.

u/Frequent-Advisor6986 9h ago
You’re welcome, I was pleasantly surprised that collagen does this. I originally added it to experiment with some pre-workout options. I didn’t expect to make my morning keto latte BETTER. 🤣

The tiniest pinch of eggshell or baking soda will make coffee less acidic.

I do half n half. It's only slightly different than the taste of heavy cream, but it is different.

u/crickjaw 15h ago
I do half and half as well, although to me the taste difference is significant(ly better).

I love heavy cream. How many more carbs is half and half?
2
u/crickjaw 7h ago
I think it’s 2g vs. 1g
1
u/Minimum_Payment_3078 7h ago
Ok, yes I just looked it up . Half a cup of heavy is 3 net carbs And half a cup of half and half is 6 net carbs

The ingredient change in those zero sugar creamers will get you eventually, they all lean way too heavy on the artificial sweetener aftertaste. I just do a splash of heavy cream and hit it with a stick blender for like ten seconds. Gets it frothy and somehow makes it taste sweeter without adding anything else.

u/Whoami_77 17h ago
While I notmally drink my coffee black. When I do decide to add something I use unsweetened almond milk. Better nutrition facts than regular milk or creamer.
2
u/loripainter12345 14h ago
Surprising, isn't it? Almond milk has more calcium than milk. That's handy for women of a certain age.

I drink it black. It took a while to get used to it but now I hate coffee with any milk, creamer, or sugar

u/Opposite_Working_84 16h ago
I also disliked the taste of (heavy) cream in my coffee. I used half/half for awhile. I'm using powdered creamer right now, and I plan to switch to plain/black soon

u/ReginaPhalangi22271 15h ago
Unsweetened almond or cashew milk. I’ve never tried it before, but when someone else mentioned a protein drink, that could also be something you add a splash of to coffee. Even if you don’t drink them, they could be your new milk replacement.

A pint of heavy cream is like $3, it might be worth another try. (It can be easy to overdo it if you're used to "milk amounts," so start small.)

Heavy cream. When we want different flavors, we put spices in it, like cinnamon and nutmeg or, right now, McCormick pumpkin spice blend. When it gets really cold, we'll get a container of sugar free hot cocoa and have a half coffee, half hot cocoa.

u/layneeofwales 16h ago
I use the ultra filtered milk, more protein less sugar. Might not work for everyone, but its working for me.

u/Grey_spacegoo 16h ago
Just use milk or half-and-half. I also do a foam iced americano with my espresso machine steam wand and add a few drop of monk fruit if I want sweet, or nothing if I want to drink it black.
Milk serving in the US is set to cup, while half-and-half are in tablespoon in the nutrition label. Do the math before deciding how much carb you will allow.

It was an easy switch to black tbh. But prior to I used unsweetened nutpods
2
u/FatRaccoon95 15h ago
I like nutpods original (no flavoring) mix of almond and coconut milk
1
u/Yourmomisbadatgames 13h ago
I second nutpods. I use the flavored, unsweetened ones. I also add a little stevia glycerite. I love heavy cream, but it's so calorie dense.

Pre-keto I’d drink my coffee with lots of half n half, I like it creamy and not very strong. Since shifting to a keto lifestyle, I use heavy whipping cream, but I pour out a little of the coffee to make it creamier (as others have said, the calories in cream can add up otherwise). I put a little bit of the Besti keto coffee syrup in and it’s great. The other thing I sometimes do is put a little keto sweetener in it and make some fresh whipped cream and put a dollop (can use 2 Tbsp whipped for 1 Tbsp liquid) and drink my coffee that way and it’s yummy.

I use equally parts Fairlife milk to the amount of coffee I have from my Moka. I'll add a tsbp of whipped heavy cream. Sometimes to be fancy I use a mix of chocolate/vanilla protein powder to make a mocha.

u/SecretAdam 17h ago
Just use milk if you prefer it. You can make up your fat intake goals elsewhere.
4
u/katiegam 16h ago
I'd be careful with milk, though, as some milk has a pretty high carb count. Fat goals don't need to be met unless you're doing keto for a medical purpose.
3
u/Violingirl58 16h ago
Fair life has a low-carb milk. I’m sure there are several others. I just use heavy cream.
1
u/SecretAdam 16h ago
That's a good point, I wasn't sure the reason why everybody recommends heavy cream and such. Carbs per 100g for skim milk is 4.8g vs 2.8g for heavy cream, so it is worse. I still would not use heavy cream with my coffee though, just for personal preference.

1 tsp monkfruit + 3 tbs of heavy cream is my usual every morning! Even when I’ve fallen off of the wagon (like right now unfortunately) it is the one consistent thing I’ve kept from my hardcore keto days.
1
u/Odd-Term9866 11h ago
I'm the same way! I have a sugar free chocolate syrup that's perhaps questionable, and I use a squirt of that and heavy cream. Even when I'm not keto, like the last week or 2. It still feels better to start the day that way, even if it's downhill from there! I'm getting serious again November 1st, because at this point, with Halloween on the horizon, what's the point?

I drank black coffee only for decades even when not doing Keto. Recently been using a big splash of heavy cream especially for the first cup in the morning and really enjoy that now.
Been meaning to try using fairlite Nutrition Plan protein drinks. 11.5 oz bottle has like 2 to 4 grams of carbs I think. They have a chocolate and a vanilla flavor. Of course you could try the fairlife whole ultra-filtered milk but it has like 6g of carbs. Guess it depends on how many cups of coffee a day you drink and if using these adds too many carbs. And of course does it taste good to you.

Make some zero carb protein shakes to add to your coffee.
I also make my own flax “milk”.

As other said get used to drinking it black, better coffee helps here...
or a good pre-made protein shake is a substitute ive been using for awhile; premier protein shakes have some decent flavor options (caramel, vanilla) and 3 net per shake.

Better Half creamer from Califia Farms is amazing. Good texture/likeness to half and half, and zero carbs. I love it.

A splash of heavy cream or coconut milk and vanilla (or any flavor) liquid stevia or monkfruit with a pinch of salt.

First off we have a stove top percolator, coffee tastes so much better than making it in regular coffee maker.
I do 4 tablespoons of butter and a scoop of isopure chocolate protein powder and a serving of lilys chocolate chips. 560 cals 2 net carbs and it tastes like coco! You can leave out the lilys and it still taste great!

I've been doing 2 day cold brew for 2 years now... Easy weekly prep and honestly just better imo

u/courtney_lorr 12h ago
Heavy whipping cream & these Toffee flavored stevia drops 🙂
some people prefer half & half as a lighter option!

u/wowbutters 11h ago
At different points I've done butter, ghee, coconut oil heavy cream. Currently I'm doing a protein coffee with ghost protein powder (Cinnabon) collagen and MCT powder. No addtl sweetener. I front load a lot of my kcal into breakfast bc I have a heavy job. I've enjoyed all of these but the current is my favorite. B4 the ghost powder, I started with just the collagen mct and 1/2 tsp monk fruit and that was fine too.

Unsweetened Almond milk + collagen. Get some protein with the collagen, but more than that it restores the texture of dairy milk.

I love the keto creamer powders. I guess I can’t mention the brand, but it’s powdered grass-fed butter and C8 MCT oil. Coffee is creamy, tasty, and good for your gut.

u/BeenThruIt 7h ago
I use heavy cream and salt.
Took a bit, but now I love it and the cream doesn't disagree with me like other dairy can.

Have you tried combining the sugar free creamer with a little bit of heavy cream? I find it adds some missing richness. Imo not many of the SF creamers are good, but i am liking the SF pumpkin spice one from aldi

I drink it with my electrolytes added in and sometimes I add a bit of dark chocolate powder or a splash of sugar free syrup either caramel, French vanilla or brown sugar. Not often but for when I need a treat

u/deniseswall 17h ago
Have you tried fairlife milk? I think 6 carbs in a cup
1
u/gafromca 3h ago
Whole fat Fairlife has a little cream in it plus extra protein that makes it richer. Dairygold FIT is another brand. Costco now has an “ultra filtered” milk in a three pack, so too much unless a family.

I use an immersion blender to blend one or 2 eggs into a cup of coffee. It doesn't taste like egg but makes it creamy and adds protein. I used to love super sugary coffee and the egg coffee is good to me without any sweetener. You can add some vanilla extract if you want flavoring. Maybe a pinch of allulose for sweetener.
