Reminder about our rules (re: Israel/Hamas war)

We understand there are aspects of the war that impact members of the media, and that there is coverage about the coverage, and these things are relevant to our subreddit.

That being said, we would like to remind you to keep posts limited to the discussion of the industry and practice of journalism. Please do not post broader coverage of the war, whether you wrote it or not. If you have a strong opinion about the war, the belligerents, their allies or other concerns, this isn't the place for that.

And when discussing journalism news or analysis related to the war, please refrain from political or personal attacks.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Update March 26, 2025: In light of some confusion, this policy remains in place and functionally extends to basically any post about the war.

Heads up as we approach election night (read this!)

To the r/journalism community,

We hope everyone is taking care of themselves during a stressful election season. As election night approaches, we want to remind users of r/journalism (including visitors) to avoid purely political discussion. This is a shop-talk subreddit. It is OK to discuss election coverage (edit: and share photos of election night pizza!). It is OK to criticize election coverage. It is not OK to talk about candidates' policies or accuse the media of being in the tank for this or that side. There are plenty of other subreddits for that.

Posts and comments that violate these rules will be deleted and may lead to temporary or permanent suspensions.

Best Practices Tax questions from a new US freelancer

• Upvotes

After getting laid off last October I started trying to develop a freelance business. I got some work immediately and rolled that into our annual tax return but I've just found out I'm supposed to be filing quarterly returns this year and am panicking a bit.

Work has been slow and I've only pulled in about $10k of work this year so far, and wanted to ask if there's a cap before I have to start filing? If not how should I approach late filings?

Also is there a good tax preparation app that anyone would recommend or is it easy to do by hand. Can I claim back Otter, Linkedin premium, and transit to and from interviews and entrance fees for conferences?

Any advice gratefully received. I'm currently going for citizenship and want to make sure I'm fully legal.

Press Freedom “Dark Day for Journalism”: Egypt Shutters Independent News Site Mada Masr, Detains Editor

A court in Cairo has ordered the closure of the independent Egyptian news site Mada Masr. The court also ordered the site’s editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah, to be detained until she pays a fine of over $50,000. She was convicted on charges of managing an unlicensed website. Mada Masr is “the flagship independent media outlet in Egypt and a pillar of independent media in the region,” says Sharif Abdel Kouddous of Drop Site News, who previously worked at Mada Masr. The independent outlet was founded in 2013 “in the midst of Egypt’s revolution and counterrevolution” and has “managed to survive all of those years in one of the most hostile media environments” in the world. Still, “what happened today is an unprecedented escalation” because Attalah and Mada Masr had never before been referred to trial.

Kouddous adds that the attack on Mada Masr comes less than a month after Egyptian authorities arrested an entire newsroom at the independent fact-checking outlet Matsadaash. They remain behind bars.

Career Advice Journalists who accepted a counteroffer after resigning — did you regret it?

I’m a reporter at a national news outlet making $55K. I recently accepted an $80K offer for a producer position at another news organization and gave my two weeks’ notice.

My current editor told me they’re looking into matching the offer, which would be a pretty significant raise.

I’ve read a lot of advice saying you should never accept a counteroffer because your employer will see you as disloyal or a flight risk and potentially replace you down the line.

I’m curious whether that applies to journalism, where people regularly move between newsrooms.

I enjoy reporting and would consider staying if they match the salary, especially if my schedule improves.
Has anyone here accepted a counteroffer at a newsroom? Did management treat you differently afterward? Did you end up regretting staying?

Career Advice Paramount buyouts

Today, our TV newsroom was shocked to get voluntary buyout offers from paramount. It was given to every staff member which is unusual.

I’m a 38-year-old tv news producer and now I’m suddenly having to think about my future. I’m concerned on where the industry is going but I have NO CLUE what else I could do or how I could get another job.

Anyone else get offered this today? What are your thoughts on the future of TV news.

Thanks

Best Practices Pet peeves!

Everyone has one. What’s yours that you see repeated in published material? Mine? “Joe Smith was killed after his car slammed into a rock.” Ok, maybe he died after or was killed when, but getting killed AFTER a car wreck is a really awful run of luck.

Journalism Ethics Where do you draw the line between gossip and news?

We all know gossip has a negative connotation.

But readers love it, and lots of rumours turn out to be true.

How do you decide which information is worthy of investigating, and what thresholds have to be met in order for you to publish unproven claims?

Career Advice changing careers

hi all! I’m currently a MSW student about to graduate. I have my BSW already and have taught as well. I’m seriously thinking of going back to school for journalism & public relations. I have always had a niche for it but was scared to major in it because everyone told me it was a dying field and no jobs or money. However I got my BSW so I know ball when it comes to no money or jobs. Do you believe journalism is worth it? How is the job market? I’m also moving to the big apple next year in June.

Best Practices Question about when doing event preview stories

I am currently a student and my professor says that event preview stories should be published at least 2 weeks before the event. I published an event preview on October 6 on the University of Arizona News Service website called Arizona-Sonoran News. It was picked up on October 22 by the Tucson Weekly while the event was happening instead of them picking it up sooner. Is that unusual for an outlet to pick up a story like that? I just found out it was picked up today which is the 2nd time I have had a story picked up by other publications. Not sure if I put the right flair, if not I can change it later.

Career Advice Not a journalist, but I have Reddit data. How do reporters prefer to be approached with something like that?

Hi all. I'm not a journalist, and I've only just started with this.

I run KissMyPost, a Reddit analytics tool, and we publish data studies on what people talk about on Reddit and who's doing the talking. My last post, on ages and genders by subreddit, is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1xf6gt3/

or
https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/s/ZTpbBgb8GD
https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/s/Q7LArmh6AD

What I'm after is reporters who'd tell us what they're working on, so we can run the Reddit side of it: how a topic grew, which communities talk about it, how the conversation changed. The story doesn't need to be about Reddit, it's just where the numbers come from. You'd get the numbers and charts for free, we'd get a credit and a link. That's the trade.

The thing is, I don't know any journalists, not even on LinkedIn.

So how would you want someone like me to reach out? And where would you look for reporters who might use this?

And if this is pointless, tell me. Thanks.

Best Practices Voter fraud tips — Tennessee

Hello Press community!
There are several people I know in Tennessee who have had their votes switch from Democrat to Republican without their consent. A handful of those people noticed the change and were able to correct it. They’re trying to reach the independent press with their stories, but they don’t use Twitter, Facebook, or other social media platforms.

What is the best way to submit news tips?

Thank you for your advice.

Best Practices [Canada] - Why do reports of arrests and charges being filed in Canada so often omit the names of those charged?

Basically, title. For context, I am a journalism school grad (from a couple of decades ago), and so is my wife. She worked a daily paper job for a little while after graduating but we've since moved and neither of us is working as a journalist these days, rather, we both work in the legal field, so we know plenty about the availability of documents from Canadian courthouses.

Why is it that often when we see reports about criminal activity in our area (specifically reports about arrests occuring and charges being laid) the names of those accused of the crimes not included? It happens with the CBC, it happens with private media, there's basically no outlets that do include the names consistently in initial reports, even though I know for a fact that those names are almost always publicly available at my place of work (the courthouse)?

Here is one such example of a story. The article states that not only have the three individuals been charged, they've already had their first court appearances. I know from the work I do now that in order for them to appear in court, an Information needs to be sworn, and Informations are, for the most part public (some exceptions like crimes committed by youth, or sex crimes where the names of the victims aren't released which sometimes means the names of the accused can't be released; neither of those apply here).

I see this all the time in Canadian media (especially local stories about lower-profile crimes that don't garner national interest). What is preventing reporters from calling the courthouse or going there in person to request a copy of the relevant Information?
