ANNOUNCMENT 📢 Hello and Welcome!
Welcome one and all to r/jewishpolitics, a place for Jews to talk politics! This sub was created for two reasons:
Like many of you, our experience with most other political spaces on reddit have ended up with us being either excluded or tokenized. This is a place for us to talk politics where we can speak as Jews without speaking for Jews.
Politics can be an exhausting topic and we should have safe spaces to be Jewish on reddit without any political requirements. The mod team here is (for the most part) also moderating r/Jewish. So, our goal is to leave some of the divisive political talk out of that sub (and perhaps others) so it can continue to serve all kinds of Jews. Creating a separate sub for politics allows us to fine-tune the rules here to be more conducive for political discussions. This is a work in progress, so expect us to take your feedback and make adjustments as we move forward.
This space is explicitly open to all kinds of political discussion, as long as the rules in the sidebar are followed. Assuming good faith and using civil language are the foundation of productive discussion among those who disagree on politics.
We expect most discussion to be focused on US and Israeli politics, but any political topic that impacts Jews is allowed.
Feel free to leave a message with any suggestions or feedback, and thanks for reading. And again, welcome to r/jewishpolitics!

Israeli Politics 🇮🇱 Massive Voter Turnout in Israel
It's at 75% with 2 hours to go before polls close. 75% of eligible voters. I can't imagine 75% of Americans doing anything together, much less taking an active part in their democracy. No matter which way this election goes, the idea that Jews have created a modern state in their ancestral land and are in control of their own destiny is miraculous.

Discussion 💬 Being a left wing Jew is very… interesting right now. And extremely frustrating.
I’m 22, Jewish (ethnically) and African American.
Alright so here are some of my positions, I am definitely for a stronger federal government, one which utilizes federally owned companies to help guide the economy. For example a federal manufacturing company to help bring back more complex manufacturing, a strong focus on national public infrastructure (like is done wth the Tennessee valley authority) and government run utilities essentially everywhere possible. Plus universal healthcare but not free. There should be some small level inflation tied costs as to help pay for parts of the system and make it slightly more resilient.
Basically the federal government is the bedrock of base services as a means to induce more competition from the bottom up. Almost like a universal contractor.
The goal is not to control industries but to keep institutional knowledge in the country and help better react to global shocks. Like say a you want to make phones, you’d design them in America, get some base parts like screws or chips made here, and it lowers the barrier to entry.
Can’t outsource internationally if you’re a government company that’s literally the full culmination of the buy America act.
First let’s talk about the DSA, it’s interesting as the national party is clearly a Russian pawn of incompetence. I mean they actively want to end aid to Ukraine. In its fight against Russia, which invaded it, and they even repeat the Russian lie of “Ukrainian resistance is causing more suffering”.
How such an imperialist stance is taken by a “socialist” party is insane, though standard for tankies.
That being said their candidates are usually solid. Like here in la nithya is by far the best candidate for mayor… though despite being part of the dsa she has been censured by the party for saying Israel has a right to exist and they refuse to endorse her.
It’s kinda funny imo.
That being said I also don’t fully dislike Mamdani on the other side of the country. I think policy wise he’s mostly decent but on combating antisemitism….. yeah no 3/10. Also free busses are a terrible idea. But supporting cycling infrastructure? Should be a bare minimum expectation but it’s surprisingly rare.
As for the anti Zionists I just don’t get how they are supported by the modern young left. Though it’s not historically unfounded (Malcom x, Trotskyists, and later communists come to mind). Anti Zionism is extremely similar to other forms of anti native imperialism, with extreme similarities to American imperialism and manifest destiny. It frames Jews as a group that must assimilate or die, who are int he way of the “rightful” occupiers of the land. It also often is similar to MAGA as it frames Jews as illegal immigrants in Israel who are trying to replace the population instead of refugees who are rightfully fleeing violence.
Zionism is clearly a response to imperial oppression in both the Christian and Muslim worlds, as well as past Roman imperialism.
Though it doesn’t surprise me that Americans, whose national legitimacy is threatened by an ideology of native self determination and land back notions would be fearful of Zionism inspiring Native Americans to take similar actions.
This wave of antisemitism being both left and right is truly scary. We have the president invoking antisemitic language.
The vp in league with neo Nazis like tpusa and co, and the push for a semi fascist surveillance state.
I support better public transit, including other issues like tackling climate change and the housing crisis spawned by white supremacist zoning and land use laws, but is me ever being able to afford a home, not suffocating from fossil fuel use, really dependent on holding my nose and potentially voting for an antisemite. I know many ither democrat Jews are feeling the same way right now.
I fear this could lead to a less politically active Jewish population that’s more isolated,Mahican will only allow more antisemites to run amuck unchallenged.
And with Israel being mostly right wing (at least with how it presents itself especially to Americans) it’s been quite frustrating pro Israel groups defend far right Neo Nazis like Elon musk for the sake of maintaining “support”.
It’s ridiculous.
The far right isn’t an ally it’s a stab in the back loudly calling that it’ll happen.
Like I’m not technically politically homeless. I’m on the left, but the American left? It’s like it hasn’t Changed yet has become far more populist in response to trump. It’s going to be a rocking few next years.

Israeli Politics 🇮🇱 It’s propaganda. - Collating the sources and explaining the territorial dynamics in Judea and Samaria shows that the settler violence narrative is fabricated
It is essential to understand the empirical dynamics, what is happening on the ground, before rushing to moral condemnation. The point is not to say that no settler has committed a crime—the relevant criterion would be comparison to crime rates in other regions of Israel and globally—and not to excuse acts of violence. But as it stands, the narrative of settler violence does not offer a substantive description: nothing about the constitutive actors, interactions, or dynamics within Judea and Samaria.
…
Arguably, the core solution would not be to remove settlements, nor to demand that courts find individuals guilty of crimes that they may not have actually committed, but to increase IDF and police presence in the region. That may also mean embracing the legitimacy of permanent Jewish presence as a condition of law, order, and peace.
The attack on the tomb of Eleazar the Cohen—alongside explicit threats of a repeat of the October 7 genocide—is simply one act of violence in an endless stream of crimes targeting Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria, a land to which the Jewish people are indigenous. The stunning media prominence of the campaign against settler violence conceals this reality. It does not aim at peaceful coexistence, but territorial concessions from Israel, forcible removal of the Jewish population in Judea and Samaria, and further genocidal violence against Israelis.
If we are committed to the principle that both Arabs and Jews can live amongst the olive groves, we must end the violence. That starts by acknowledging the problem of antizionist violence, not settler violence, and refusing to stigmatize a people for where they live—least of all for returning to the land of their ancestors.

Israeli Politics 🇮🇱 Likud and right-wing allies scramble to mobilize voters amid apparent alarm over turnout
They have had how long to motivate their supporters? You're scrambling now...while screaming about how Arab Israelis, who have the right to vote, are going to "steal" elections because they are turning out LIKE ALL ISRAELIS SHOULD?
Other reports are saying bibi and his cohorts are trying to extend voting hours NOW? Something that could have and probably should have been done to benefit ALL Israelis at any point prior to election day?
Interesting...

Discussion 💬 Tone aside, the sheer amount of coverage of Israel in the NYT is unreal
This is just venting, but the NYT has run at least one news article or Op-Ed on Israel, often two or three, literally every single day for at least the past year. Uniformly negative tone aside, it's just an insane amount of coverage. The Washington Post and Wall Street Journal cover Israel a lot but not in the same realm as the NYT. Israel easily gets more coverage than half the actual states. Certainly must be more than any other country. As someone who lives in one of the less frequently mentioned states, I find it genuinely insulting how much more often you can read the umpteenth story about Palestinians trying to survive among rubble etc. than literally anything going on where I am.
