Question Blind passengers from Tuscany
So we visited friends in Tuscany and collected chestnuts together.
Yesterday we flew back to our home in Berlin, Germany and sorting through the chestnuts I noticed some of them have holes in them.
Then I noticed the maggots. Any idea what they are? What do I do with them? We don't live near a forest.

Bug Appreciation! Met This Little Buddy On My Walk
This little one was really taking her time crossing the sidewalk, so I let her crawl onto my hand and brought her to some nice, safe foliage.
She was very polite and so gorgeous! ♥🥰

Bug Appreciation! Yellow Jacket
I found this lady in our house yesterday not moving around. I did my usual take her outside and give her honey routine.
After 15-20 minutes, she was still eating, so I left her outside with her snack. I checked in on her an hour later, and she was still there and still eating (even if there wasn't really anything left to eat).
It was getting dark and cold. I decided to build an enclosure for her and bring her back inside with plans to release her this afternoon because it's going to be a warm day.
When I went to bed, she still wasn't moving around much. It was then I began to suspect that she was coming to her natural lifespan's end and that she would be gone in the morning.
She wasn't moving around at all this morning but was still alive. I still planned to release her in the afternoon and let nature take its course.
A few hours later, I checked in on her. She was buzzing and flying around her enclosure, perfectly fine. I didn't want to stress her out, so I released her (the temperature's pretty decent right now) a few hours earlier than planned.
I was not expecting her story to end this way, but I'm glad she's fine and that I was able to help her out!

Bug Appreciation! Look at this Daraeocoris Lutiscens that I saved today!
Just saved this little guy today. He was on the bus and I was worried about him getting killed, either by accident or on purpose… 😢 😞 😔
But I managed to get him off. I put him on a flowerbed that they had out on the pavement near the bus stop!

ID Request Found this guy at work
I found this bug at work and from searching by the photo it tells me it’s a xanthocryptus novozealandicus which is native to New Zealand. But I’m in Kansas and my very light searching says they aren’t anywhere in North America. Just curious if that’s actually what it is and how if got here

Bug Education Moth vs Butterfly
Here are four easy tips to help distinguish between a moth and a butterfly!
- Check their antennae! If you are able to get a close enough look, you can spot some pretty big differences on the tops of their heads! Butterflies typically have thin antennas with a small club at the top, whereas moths are usually much fluffier and featherlike.
- See what time of day it is! Typically, butterflies will be most active during the day, and moths will be active at night. Of course, there may be exceptions, but this is typically their schedule.
- How are they resting? A moth typically rests its wings laid flat and on display, but a butterfly pulls its wings together and upward!
- Don’t be fooled by their colors! Moths are traditionally known for neutral colors and butterflies for being vibrant, but either can come in just about any color!
What are some other ways these wonderful creatures differ or are similar? What is your favorite species?
