Mental Health 💡 One thing about engineering college, it will take your entire day and still ask for more.

So yeah, my college runs from 9 to 5, and travelling to and from college takes another 3 hours out of my day. By the time I reach my PG, it's already 7 PM. I rest for a bit, have something to eat, and finally sit down to study for my semester 1 exams.

And guess what? That's when these fu\\ assignments show up. 😭

Do they feel shy in giving this assignment to us in college?

Like, bro, I have an entire semester to prepare for. Am I supposed to study for my exams or keep completing assignments just for the sake of it? I barely have enough time to breathe, and somehow there's always more work. 🥲

Anyway, this is engineering, I guess. Just a never-ending cycle of college, travelling, assignments, and barely surviving. 🥀

Question ❓ Why is being good at mental math often equated with being intelligent or having good mathematical ability?

I'm fairly good at maths. I can understand and apply mathematical concepts with relative ease. But I've always been quite slow and error-prone in doing mental calculations in my head. I think it has to do with not having very good working memory. I find that people often judge me for this and seem to think I'm not very smart. Can anyone relate?

School & College Life 🏫 So, who won, your dream or your rank?

• Upvotes

Do Indian students actually choose their careers, or do their marks choose for them?

I’m a student in India, and I’ve been thinking about how we make career decisions here. We’re asked what we want to become before we’ve had a real chance to explore what interests us. Then come board marks, entrance exams, family expectations, Often, what a student can study depends less on what they want and more on what their marks allow.I’m not saying marks or financial security don’t matter. They do. But should a few exams have this much influence over the direction of a teenager’s life? For those who’ve been through it: did you choose your field, or did your marks and rank choose it for you? And how did it work out?

So, who won, your dream or your rank?

School & College Life 🏫 “When answers are instant, does thinking become optional

I’m a student, and I’ve noticed how easy it’s become to get unstuck. Need a concept explained? There’s a video for it. Stuck on a question? AI can solve it in seconds.

In many ways, this is incredible. Knowledge has never been this accessible.

But I wonder if we’re losing something. When answers are always one search away, do we get better at understanding things, or less comfortable with not knowing?

There’s a difference between reading an explanation and genuinely understanding it. Between getting the right answer and knowing why it’s right. And between using technology to help us think and relying on it to think for us.

I’m not arguing that we should stop using these tools. I just wonder whether instant answers are changing how we approach difficult problems.

For other students: do you still sit with a hard problem and try to figure it out before looking up the answer? Or has that habit faded?

Study Resources 📚 Best tablet for study & media under ₹30k - ₹35k? (No gaming, strictly note-taking and media)

I’m looking to buy a tablet primarily for my studies, and my budget is strictly around ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 INR.

Here is exactly what I need it for:

  • Study & Note-taking (Most Important): I need a stylus/pen experience that is completely smooth, responsive, and lag-free. I will be writing a lot.
  • Media Consumption: Watching a lot of YouTube lectures and streaming movies/shows. A good display and decent speakers are a must.
  • No Gaming: I won't be playing any games at all, so I don't care about ultimate GPU performance or heavy gaming benchmarks. I just want smooth day-to-day UI multitasking.

I want something that offers the best value for this specific use case. I've heard mixed things about whether to go for Samsung, Lenovo, or Xiaomi in this price bracket.

Which tablet would you recommend that fits this budget currently? Also, please let me know if the stylus comes in the box or if I have to buy it separately!

Thanks in advance!

Career Advice 💼 CS student in India, low energy for months and no motivation. How did you take the first step?”

I’m a 20-something CS student in India. For the past few months, I’ve felt like I have no energy and nothing interests me. I used to have clear goals (building projects, getting an internship), but they’ve faded. I still go to college and do the basics, but I’m basically just going through the motions and telling myself things will change one day. I know they won’t unless I do something, but I can’t find the will to do anything.

It has been slowly getting worse over several months, not just a bad week.

Has anyone been through this? What helped you actually start moving again? Did you see a professional, and how did you take the first step? Any advice on what to do first would really help.

Question ❓ Why should quality education be a scarce privilege rather than a reasonable expectation?

India has a massive problem. The problem of lack of good colleges. I'm not denying there aren't any, I'm asking why are these colleges so scarce? I'm talking about the engineering colleges sitting at the top 1% category. We all know how bad and hopeless are the tier 2,3 colleges.

Imagine two students who are both capable of becoming excellent engineers. One gets a seat at a well-equipped college with experienced professors, good laboratories and active research opportunities. The other misses the cutoff by a few marks and enters an institution with fewer resources. Why? Didn't he took deserve that studying environment?

Shouldn't entrance exams help allocate scarce seats at particular institutions, not determine who gets access to a decent education in the first place? I'm not saying that 'just increase the number of colleges'. That's too vague. For a college to be decent, it needs skilled faculty, good equipments, infrastructure and sustained investment. That takes years to build. We don't want a college with just a name.

My point is that a student who doesn't manage to get into the top 1% colleges should not have to settle for an institution that fails to teach them properly. India already has policies for this but implementing them consistently on the ground level requires honest authorities who genuinely want to see a change and that's the harder part.

Career Advice 💼 Tier-2 Cities vs Metro Cities for MBA

Is moving to a metro city for an MBA always worth the extra money?

Suppose you have two options:

📍 Option A: A B-school in Pune or Bangalore with higher fees and living expenses.

📍 Option B: A decent B-school in Indore or another tier-2 city with lower expenses.

Would you pay extra for metro-city exposure, networking, and potentially better corporate access, or choose the more affordable option and invest the savings in developing your skills?

I feel the answer depends on the specific college, placements, and career goals—not just the city.

What would you choose, and what's your reasoning?

Career Advice 💼 Should I drop out of my master’s?

Myquals- BSc hons in microbiology
I realised in the final year of my BSc that I am not into research, especially wet lab. I started rethinking my career there on. Got an admission for msc in computational biology and bioinformatics. Thought I’ll switch to dry lab. I realised I don’t like that either. Now my mum and everyone in college tell me to just get this degree done so you have a masters. My mother thinks I’m burnt out and if I quit this I won’t go for masters again and remain an undergrad. I thought, okay I’ll just finish it for the sake of it.’ But with every passing day, the topics are getting more complex and difficult to understand. It is full of coding and maths. My interest is biology. I was never into maths and stuff. Now I feel like pursuing BSc was a mistake. I don’t think I want a career in research or go for a PhD or any of it. So I thought of dropping out of this course as I’m really finding it all very hard and not something I’m interested in. The faculty isn’t great either. I may lose some fee but if I continue and later in upcoming sems find it even tougher it’ll just be worse as I will lose 2 years fee. It makes no sense for me to continue this when I know I won’t be pursuing this as my career. What should I do? Should I just get this done with or do MBA so I can get into corporate? I don’t mind going into teaching either. I just want a job at the end which doesn’t have anything to do with research, coding or working in a lab.

Question ❓ Im lost

To put it short, I am doing jee right now (11th) and I'm starting to fear that I really might have messed up. I was hesitant to take jee since the beginning, but because of my interest in science over commerce, it felt like the only option if I wanted a "successful career". I regretted it then and now because I knew my strength is not at all in academics, it's more in creative thinking and arts you could say but due to pressure and uncertainty I chose jee.

Now I'm stuck bc I don't know about jee but quitting is not an option. I want to desperately go abroad and am clinging onto hopes that if jee doesn't work out, I will find a scholarship somehow.

but I want to know my reality bc it seems hopeless.

In the end my question is just that, is my only option to hate jee and grind through it or will I have any success in going abroad?
