Why is Chandigarh so clean compared to say, Delhi or Mumbai?
2
u/Lombdi Apr 20 '16
I'm gonna guess population density and open spaces. Chandigarh has approx 9200 people per sq.km. as opposed to Mumbai/Delhi with 22000 people per sq.km.

u/akahorizon Apr 19 '16
-
Traffic is well organised. People drive/ride in lanes for respective vehicles. Road-rage negligible.
-
People are neither too friendly nor too aloof. They are live and let live kinds...ones who mind their own business.
-
No prominent show-baazi but tolerable level of fukra-panti is always there.
-
Most of the places are very clean with plenty of open spaces and wide roads.

IMO the reasons are deeper than that.
Chandigarh is a UT, and gets funds from the center. Run primarily by an administrator, not some populist CM who doesn't give a shit about the city and only goes for rural votebank.
Also, it a modern city, designed by a legendery architect, who planned it really well. As such, it doesn't have all the half-hazard unauthorized construction that other older cities have.
People have a sense of pride in the beauty and cleanliness of the city. The role of local papers is also crucuial. Chandigarh people read their local papers, and if things arn't going well in their city, then poeple care and ask questions about it. The municipality ovet the course of the past decades, has also been relatively good in doing its job (but the important thing is, that people ask questions and hold them somewhat accountable if they are screwing up, through local newspapers).

Been to Chandigarh twice. Seemed like a nice clean place, only a little bland, maybe. But the people were quite welcoming. We were on our way to Manali on our bikes and many people waved to us and wished us good luck as we passed them. Loved that.

u/japanorway Apr 19 '16
many people waved to us and wished us good luck as we passed them.
Most likely visitors from local ahaatas.

Rock garden, rose garden, pal dhabha, confusing similar looking sectors, mansukha lake, elante mall......bas bohat ghoom liye chandigarh. Chalo Next city ..
3
u/hungryfoolish Apr 20 '16
You missed PU and gehri route. Also PCA Stadium if there is a match goign on (technically Mohali, but still). Also, there is a budding foodie scene with a lot of really nice cafes, resturaunts and micro-brewries popping up of late.

u/HawkEye_7 Apr 18 '16 edited Apr 21 '16
did you visit Mohali's Silvi Park, PCA Stadium huh... /s

Chandigarh always reminds me of Canberra for some reason, I think it's because both cities are planned and they have a shit ton of roundabouts.
Chandigarh is a cool city.

u/ratusratus Apr 15 '16
Considering, Mohali and Chandigarh as one, there is a place in some sector called Mattor. This place is the real beauty of this shity.

What kind of businesses thrive in Chandigarh?
4
u/metaltemujin Apr 16 '16
Let's see, near the Industrial areas of Chd, Mohali and Panchukula - There is a Biotech cluster developing, so we can expect Bio-tech research centers supporting industries nearby in say about 10 years.
Several Pharma RnD and pharmacovigilence companies here (spread out in Himachal as well) - Ranbaxy, Prexel (previously Quantum), etc.
Several IT, BPO and call centers.
Has lots and lost of independent businesses (mostly traditional) by the enterprising punjabi community.
I have personally not seen the entrepreneurship and start-up scene pick up here.

u/fresh69fresh Apr 15 '16
I thought it was a city like delhi
2
u/metaltemujin Apr 16 '16
Chd is relatively tiny... travel diagonally and you'll have covered about 12-18 kms and in 30-40 minutes.
If you consider the Tricity area (Chd-Mohali-Panchkula) it can be bigger with the other two cities slowly merging into their parent states.
5
u/Fameer_Fuddi Apr 15 '16
Delhi is also not exactly a city.
Chandigarh and Delhi, both are Union Territories.
1
u/nipuntantia Apr 15 '16
Then you should visit chandigarh..... You will know. .... It's nothing like Delhi
20
Apr 15 '16
Gibe it back to Punjab BC
1
u/metaltemujin Apr 16 '16
No no, cheaper petrol and daaru...this way is better. Although its surrounded on 3 sides by Punjab, it is better as a UT.
2
u/revert_back Apr 15 '16
Oye bhenchod, keep dreaming. You guys have your bathindas and budhladals.
11
Apr 15 '16
Keep dreaming? Chandigarh is Punjab's land. Punjab is the rightful owner of it.
3
Apr 19 '16
Chandigarh is a designated union territory, it's culture and norms are far different from any neighbouring state.

Like most other hornbills, even These have a very interesting and doting nesting behavior, here's a small summary.

I used to study in Helix Institute, Chandigadh and there was no room13. Not even batch 13.
5
u/nipuntantia Apr 15 '16
13 is considered to be unlucky in chritanity. And the city was designed by french architect.....
3
u/womawoma Apr 15 '16
I knew it was considered an omen in christianity but didn't know how that relates to us, but yes this makes it clear. :)

Highest per capita income in the country.
That's interesting. I'd have thought it would be Delhi. Do you have a source for this?
3
u/Fameer_Fuddi Apr 15 '16 edited Apr 15 '16
Delhi has a huge population (2 crore+) and a LOT of poor migrants so the per capita income is lower than Chandigarh, but still higher than most of India
→ More replies (6)
26
u/yantrik Apr 14 '16
We also must have the highest per capita traffic policemen in the country, also i am sure we must be the higest per capital traffic challan payers in India. Traffic cops here are like batman, you cant see them but boom, they come out of shadow and challan you . But i guess they are the sole reason we have a sensible traffic , if not for them we will turn into Pune.
6
u/fapwithnohands Apr 16 '16
It does have a lot of traffic policemen. I've also noticed if your car has a number plate stating that it is from outside Chandigarh, then there is a very high chance they'll stop you.
4
u/Snapdr4ad0n Apr 15 '16
Short documentary on Chandigarh police:
http://chandigarhpolice.gov.in/police-documentary.html4
u/nishankk Apr 14 '16
can confirm i actually am scared of traffic police here. Already had a couple of challans in the past few years.
11
u/Random_entropy Apr 14 '16
yeah , I got my first challan for high beam in Chandigarh.
3
24
u/jugaad1 Apr 14 '16
Ever heard of a bike rider who is challaned because the pavilion rider is wearing a non ISI marked helmet ?
And a proper high speed police chase with sirens, a police jeep and two bikes , because .. well, for jumping a arguably green/yellow light .
Bureaucrats / MP's cars challaned for relatively minor issues like high-beam, seatbelt etc. Police wallahs take pride in fining VIP numbers.
-- And this is why noone fucks around with traffic rules in the city. Prod of my city !!
6
u/vaibhavcool20 Apr 14 '16
Got challaned twice in 2 days for no fucking reason.
They use challanes as a taxes. 2 - 3 lacs every day. 800 to 900 tickets.

Because the Land is limited, City is surrounded by Punjab and Haryana. Add to it the green parks and wide roads and green belts, that leave a limited room for expansion. Also high rise building are also not allowed at max you can have till 4 floor only, so naturally with no land to expand, existing land already used the cost to buy a flat/home is very high.
3
u/Lombdi Apr 20 '16
Why aren't high rises allowed?
5
u/yantrik Apr 20 '16
Earthquake prone zone with the highest probability of a massive earthquake in future, chandigarh lie on the himalayan fault line which is due a big jolt any time soon.
3
u/nipuntantia Apr 14 '16
HUDA is run by haryana govt. There is hardly any land to buy in chandigarh. You can buy plots though. For that you can get in contact with chandigarh housing board.

Apr 14 '16
3
u/AnthonyGonsalvez Apr 15 '16
Non refundable in case of flats as you get floor plan and all that magazines related to places nearby and stuff. Also they need money to organise public lottery event.
2
u/Ambarsariya Apr 14 '16
Chandigarh is surrounded by Punjab and Haryana. Not much vacant land to sell through primary market.
1
u/nipuntantia Apr 14 '16
Well yes you get plots on lottery system but I am not sure about the fee part.but you have to submit a certain amount of earnest money. Which is refundable......
2
u/ashish16luna Apr 14 '16
I think it is refundable, but not 100% sure. But rest of the part is true.
20
u/venkyprasad Apr 14 '16
Cheap liquor and no public smoking, and its actually enforced. I dont understand how cops can be so disciplined in one place and be so useless in the next state when its basically the same culture
11
u/nipuntantia Apr 14 '16
Its bcos its run by administrator not a minister.....people are aware and law abiding and a big part of the population is of government employees......
6
u/adisin Apr 15 '16
It's not that people are law-abiding but mostly due to strict enforcement by cops. People jump at a red signal the moment they do not see a cop around.

I'm from delhi and I've never been. I would like to explore the urban spaces there on foot. What are the good places?
1

Well you can visit most of the famous attractions here like rock garden and lake and a few other places.
1
3
u/fapwithnohands Apr 16 '16
How is the electricity situation there? I visited my relatives in Chandigarh and Mohali 4-5 years ago and there were a lot of power cuts.
5
u/nipuntantia Apr 17 '16
We do have a few power cuts in summers but that are not long and are announced in the paper. Power cuts are area wise. And mohali does get a lot of power problem in summers as its controlled by punjab govt.
1
u/zebumatters Apr 16 '16
a) Properties prices are going down. Why?
b) I hate the fact that Chandigarh has little IT and Punjab has nothing. With lakhs of us working down in south, I am waiting for the day when we will have good IT shops in Chandigarh (or another big cities in Punjab) and I pack my luggage to north. What are your thoughts?
5
u/33333333333321 Apr 17 '16
IT will kill your city. Just look at what it did to Bangalore! Everyone before was like nice climate, look at all the trees. Now its hotter than chennai ._.
1
Apr 20 '16
I've been hearing about the climate changes in Bangalore, but never knew it to be correlated to IT. How does that matter and does it effect Hyderabad the same way too?
2
u/nipuntantia Apr 16 '16
There is slump in property market all over India that is why the rates are down. The IT is there we should be thankful for that .....
15
u/jugaad1 Apr 14 '16
Why the fuck do you have to play yo yo honey Singh on loud in your open jeep on the Gehri route ? How successful is the above strategy to get laid ? Laid by Grills, not thullas .
1
u/achshar Apr 15 '16
You'd be surprised how often it works. And even then, as someone who, on occasion, may partake in such activities. It's not really about picking up chicks, it's about having fun. Getting girl's attention happens to be a byproduct.
5
2
-1
u/nipuntantia Apr 14 '16
Apparently the chances are better at getting laid with that strategy ....... Then using FB to approach girls....
1
Apr 14 '16
What do you do for fun here?
1
u/nipuntantia Apr 14 '16
Well we have a gedi route......and a few night clubs.....apart from that you can go uphills.
1
u/hungryfoolish Apr 20 '16
A few clubs, a nice and growing list of cafes, restaurants and micro-breweries (ask me if you plan to visit, and I'll give you some recommendations), if you like to drive then its a really great city to drive in (but follow traffic rules because our chandigarh cops are probably the strictest in india), relax in the various parks and gardens, check out sukhna lake, especially if you like jogging. Check out the local dhaba scene as well.
2
Apr 14 '16
Uphills isn't part of chandigarh tho. For the time I have been here, I have been to very few places which can actually be called good. Its mostly because I'm with friends that I manage to tolerate them. It's more an unkill city than a young people city.

A city with very well stocked liquor stores
3
u/nipuntantia Apr 14 '16

Chandigarh:
A joke that I read somewhere:
When a baby is expected in Chandigarh, people say -
"Agar ladka huaa toh Roadies,
Agar ladki huyi toh Splitsvilla"
Jokes apart, very warm people :)
0
u/adisin Apr 15 '16
Meh, Not so warm. People are ready to make a fool out of you if you are game for it; similar story like everywhere else. A business man will maximise his profit anywhere is this world.
4
u/nipuntantia Apr 15 '16 edited Apr 15 '16
By warm means.....good hospitality and helping behavior. If you are on road and ask for directions no body will give you a rude reply......

very warm people
Sex ratio : 818 women/1000 men
Yeah indeed.

u/tsk1979 Apr 15 '16
Any city with high migrant population will have this. Migrants are mostly male first. In their youth they come for greener pastures, and only later then settle down. Female infanticide/foeticide is a big problem in PB and Haryana, but Chandigarh is different.

I am from Chandigarh, and completely agree with the statement. It feels like the city is more of a retirement home for people.
That said, it is far more safer than other tier 2 cities, and infrastructure is far better.
3
u/nishankk Apr 14 '16
that is exactly how i describe chandigarh to anyone asking my why i wanna move out for college, man this is really a retiring home nothing to see, nothing to do. I would like to say though the schools in chandigarh are top notch.
