I went to Chicago on the 16th-19th of October and it’s fair to say I had an amazing time. I put in 25k steps, half of which was on Saturday at the Woodfield Mall which was super cool to walk around because I don’t have a good mall where I’m from. Also, Amtrak trains are a very comfortable way of travel. I’ll be coming back in June for Pokemon NAIC for sure, what else should I do while I’m there?

Illinois Politics Is Bailey running ads anywhere?

Pritzker is running ads in the Chicago area but I’ve seen nothing from Bailey and I was wondering if he’s running ads in the southern part of the state. I know Bailey has little to no money in his campaign but I thought I would see at least one Bailey or Pritzker attack ad by now

Illinois News Operation Highway Shield: 766 Unsafe Trucks and Drivers Sidelined Across Four States. Who Is Holding the Trucking Companies and Licensing Agencies Accountable?

Let’s talk about something that deserves a hell of a lot more attention than it’s getting.
From July 28–30, 2026, federal and state authorities conducted Operation Highway Shield across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio. The operation targeted unsafe commercial vehicles, unqualified drivers, immigration violations, and suspected trucking-related fraud.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the three-day operation produced these results:
766 unsafe drivers and commercial vehicles placed out of service.
86 operators arrested, including for offenses involving dangerous conduct.
51 immigration detentions, including 21 drivers holding non-domiciled commercial licenses issued by California and New York.
36 English-language proficiency violations.
Nearly $1 million in stolen cargo recovered.
Read those numbers again. This wasn’t a yearlong nationwide investigation. These were the preliminary results of three days of enforcement across four states.
And here’s my question: How the hell are this many problems being uncovered during one enforcement operation, and what were the companies employing these drivers doing before the inspections?
These are commercial trucks weighing tens of thousands of pounds, traveling the same interstate highways as our families. There is absolutely no room for cutting corners on licensing, training, vehicle maintenance, or driver qualifications.
Now let’s talk about Illinois.
In 2023, Governor JB Pritzker signed legislation replacing temporary visitor licenses with standard driver’s licenses for eligible undocumented residents. To be clear, those are ordinary driver’s licenses, not automatic commercial CDLs, and applicants still have to pass driving tests and meet other requirements.
But that policy is absolutely fair game for public scrutiny. Illinois’ Democratic leadership has made expanding access to licenses a priority. Residents have every right to ask how carefully licensing requirements are enforced and whether the state has adequate safeguards against fraud.
The reported CDL cases in Operation Highway Shield involved licenses from California and New York, not Illinois. Nevertheless, the operation raises serious questions about how state licensing systems communicate with federal regulators and how improperly qualified operators end up moving freight across state lines.
And I want the trucking companies investigated just as aggressively as the drivers.
Federal law already prohibits motor carriers from allowing unqualified people to operate commercial vehicles. Companies are required to investigate driving records, check qualifications, and maintain driver documentation.
If a freight company knowingly employs someone without the required qualifications, ignores disqualifying information, falsifies records, or cuts corners on vehicle safety to save money, that company deserves serious consequences.
Stop treating the person behind the steering wheel as the only one responsible. Follow the money. Find out who hired them, who verified their credentials, who maintained the equipment, and who approved putting that truck on the highway.
And no, this isn’t an argument that every immigrant truck driver is dangerous. Plenty are properly licensed, experienced, and law-abiding. This is about people and businesses violating the rules, regardless of where anyone was born.
Illinois Democrats should be prepared to answer questions about the licensing policies they passed and how those policies are administered. Republicans running neighboring states should face the same scrutiny of their enforcement systems. Safety standards don’t change depending on which political party runs the state.
My position is simple: If you’re operating an 80,000-pound tractor-trailer on American highways, you need to be legally authorized, properly licensed, properly trained, and capable of meeting every applicable safety requirement. No exceptions based on political convenience.
And if a company knowingly puts an unqualified driver behind the wheel, the consequences shouldn’t stop with the driver.
A commercial driver’s license is supposed to represent demonstrated qualifications, not just another piece of government paperwork.
The question isn’t whether we should enforce these standards. It’s why an extraordinary enforcement sweep is uncovering problems that our everyday licensing, hiring, and inspection systems should already be catching.

Question Is There a Lack of State Pride?

I moved here relatively recently from Ohio to Chicago and I feel like there’s a distinct lack of pride in the state, at least in Chicago. People seem to identify as Chicagoans first, Illinoisans second. I’ll admit I’m one of those people haha. And I get it - Chicago is an amazing city and people rightfully have a lot of pride in it. I just find it interesting because in Ohio people seem to have a lot of pride in the state, and identify as Ohioans first and foremost. I feel like a lot of it comes down to the urban/rural divide and how much Illinois is dominated by the Chicago metro whereas in Ohio there are 3 big metros all equally sized and equally spread out throughout the state with smaller metros in between. There is also the obsession with OSU sports that dominates everything and unites people across the state.

I’m just curious how people (especially from outside of Chicago) view state pride and what really unites us as Illinoisans?

EDIT: To everyone shitting on Ohio, saying I moved out because I didn’t like it there - that’s not the case. Ohio is a beautiful state with a lot to love. Is it perfect, of course not. There’s definitely things I don’t like, but that’s not at all why I moved out. I wanted to experience living somewhere else, something that I think everyone should try in their lifetime. I also want to have pride in my adopted home, hence the post.
