I heard that the Duo combusts into flames if you unfold it during days that end in Y. It also factory resets itself if you get impatient while trying to unlock it. Anyone with a release date of early November should DEFINITELY cancel just to be safe

22

u/That_One_Cool_Guy 6d ago

I’m cancelling my fucking preorder before it arrives 11/2ish. Everyone with a 512 GB, Space White model should do the same, especially if you have an earlier date. Get mad with me! Those apps will never be optimized! REEEEEE

5

u/Cowhide12 6d ago

I’m 11/6. You should cancel yours, and I promise I’ll do it right after. I also have the 512 white model.

7

u/True_Protection6842 6d ago

Same, everyone should cancel immediately. It's going to be TERRIBLE! I will keep mine as sacrifice!

5

u/SixstringSWE 6d ago

I mean if you had a oct 23 date id just resell it rather than cancel atp lol

12

u/CulturalAmbassador59 6d ago

Don't give ideas😂😂

u/Imabuffguy95 6d ago

The people who are considering cancelling because they expected all their apps to be 100% optimized on day 1 blow my mind lol.

  1. Why did they assume all their apps would be fully optimized on day 1?

  2. Why would they cancel their pre-order on something that will basically be a non-issue for a majority of popular apps soon?

16

u/Jtaylorftw 6d ago

The amount of people saying it's apples fault just baffles me lol. Even tech creators on YouTube who should certainly know better. Did we all forget the iPhone X ? Was moving to the current aspect ratio a bad move by Apple just because it took a bit for things to catch up? Nah

7

u/zzzman82 6d ago

Having watched a few video reviews and online chatter, I don't know why some are freaking out about these reviews.

They haven't really highlighted anything we didn't expect:
- Lack of FaceID
- Worse cameras
- Shorter battery life than the 18 Pro Max
- Trash Facetime camera – We knew this soon after the keynote
- Unoptimised third party apps – Remember the good old iPhone X days my fellow oldies?
- Paying more for compromises vs 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max

Like none of the above are new or surprising.
Looking forward to picking mine up tomorrow at 8am sharp.

u/JohnApple94 6d ago

The move to iPhone 5, and then a couple years later with the move to iPhone 6/plus, also saw a bunch of unoptimized apps.

Maybe it’s just because I’ve been through this 3 times before, but it’s a complete non-issue for me and something I fully expected to deal with for the first few weeks/months.

9

u/LTComedy 6d ago

Yeah, watching the reviews and ignoring the app issues it seems like a great phone, I’m excited as hell.

1

u/Legitimate-Hand-74 6d ago

It looks like a really high build quality. Can’t wait to get it in my hands.

3

u/IndyDude11 6d ago

I don't assume all of my apps will be fully optimized Day 1, but I do expect the large company apps like Google Docs/Sheets to be better optimized than what I've seen so far. Smaller devs get some time, for sure, but big devs don't.

All that said, that's on the developers for the most part, not really on Apple.

1

u/StealthReplicant 6d ago

Did we forget about the iPhone 10 and how it took time for devs to compensate for the screen space? Or the iPhone 4 when it took time for devs to compensate for Retina display? Or the original fucking iPhone when it took time for devs to create apps at all? What are we even fucking talking about?

1

u/penskeracin1fan 6d ago

Shows how spoiled tech folks have become

1

u/titanup001 6d ago

I knew the wouldn’t be “optimized,” like having more than one column to take advantage of space and such. I expected just blown up stretched out phone apps.

But what we’re seeing is shocking. The shitty black dock bar on the cover screen. The normal size phone app just drowning on the big screen.

That’s simply unacceptable.

Honestly, I think Apple fucked up not just using iPad apps on the inside. They already have the only real tablet app infrastructure, I don’t know why you wouldn’t start with those.

-3

u/velvet_funtime 6d ago

High expectations from a $2000 phone? How dare they.

3

u/Imabuffguy95 6d ago

High expectations are completely different from impossible expectations. Apps aren't even fully optimized on Android foldables and they've had a 10 year head start. It's an impossible expectation to think apps would be fully optimized for Apple on day 1.

0

u/velvet_funtime 6d ago

Not impossible. Apple could have set up some certification program where existing apps had to pass certain tests to be "iphone duo ready".

They've done it in the past.

3

u/Imabuffguy95 6d ago

This wasn't even done for the iPad release or previous iPhone releases with changes to their aspect ratio. Why would it have been expected for an even bigger change?

2

u/Jtaylorftw 6d ago

And what exactly does this do? Would the apps be unavailable on duo, hurting Apple by limiting their App Library and removing user agency to use apps that have been abandoned or have small development teams? Or do you propose Apple offer some incentive program? Should they pay developers to do this? Do you think this would actually benefit Apple at all, considering the phone is already back ordered without optimized apps and they didn't have to do a single thing to dangle the carrot for devs?

-1

u/Thorvarium 6d ago

Soon (few years)

-1

u/PandaBearLovesBamboo 6d ago
  1. Definitely didn’t assume this. But knowing things logically and seeing a review are different. For example we all knew largely what to expect from the cameras. But literally seeing someone use the device to take a photo vs their pro makes it hit differently.

  2. Is this question assuming the phone was perfect otherwise. Perfect weight. Perfect camera. Perfect ablility to use with 1 hand. Only issue is apps? Yeah I suppose i would agree that cancelling for that reason I would recommend rethinking it.

Bottom line I see in reviews is it’s not for everyone and it’s a gen 1 product. If you think it’s for you then - according to reviewers - you are in the minority.

-9

u/Competitive_Sky_4513 6d ago

Why not to assume especially when you’re paying wayyy more than the flagship phone, and the flagship phone has everything optimized

5

u/Imabuffguy95 6d ago

Because third party app developers don't care if you're paying way more than Apple's flagship phone.

-36

u/Level_Corgi_265 6d ago

I guess spending $2000 on a phone and expecting it to work flawlessly is to much 😂

16

u/Imabuffguy95 6d ago

All the Apple delivered apps are fully optimized on day 1. Any apps that aren't optimized are solely on the developers which I don't know how you'd expect them all to be working flawlessly on day 1.

You're not only asking for something that no company or competitor has ever delivered but you're also expecting it. Yes, that is too much.

-9

u/Human-Celebration125 6d ago

You don't need to make excuses for them. Folding phones have been out for several years.

6

u/Imabuffguy95 6d ago

Excuses for who? The developers? I'm so curious on who you're actually blaming here for the third party apps not being fully optimized on day 1.

If you're blaming apps not being optimized for folding phones in general then yes, maybe you can blame developers for not optimizing their apps in the ~10 years that foldables have been out.

61

u/cvxmx 6d ago

Honestly people who cancel after watching a video of everything we were told, are the right persons to cancel. This is a folding phone , its going to do that great but of course to do so means some things will have to take a step back.

Any phone camera from fbe past few years will be more than enough for daily use.

Want the most spec'd out device? Get a pro max Want to be able to have a larger screen on you - in pocket- at all times? The duo is the choice

7

u/w1ckizer 6d ago

I’m getting this phone to consume entertainment. I watch a lot of movies and football games on my phone. Is it crazy to pay this much to do it? Maybe but I don’t care lol.

1

u/datingshoot 6d ago

The only thing I don't understand is how much bigger the content is gonna be on average. Some aspect ratios the improvement seems imperceptible cause black bars. I feel like I mostly watch YouTube as opposed to videos and stuff, and even then I guess it depends which channel you are watching as youtube supports multiple aspect ratios? Not sure. Seems like maybe a 25-30% increase on average for that content

1

u/w1ckizer 6d ago

Idk. I’ll let you know in two days.

3

u/littleotterpop 6d ago

It starts to get annoying the way people act like anything that's not the best of the best of the best in every capacity is just garbage. Like I'm not trying to be a photographer with my phone, I don't necessarily need the camera specs of the iPhone pro. It doesn't have face ID? Okay, touch ID works just fine. The apps aren't all optimized day 1? Okay, it's not the end of the world, they'll get there. The beauty of technology is that we have plenty of options to choose from, if somebody wants the best of the best of the best of everything they can go buy it. I'm happy with a folding phone with a good (not excellent) camera because I just take fun pictures and don't even utelize all of the camera features on a pro model. Touch ID is just fine, I don't need face ID. I'm excited about the duo for what it is, not everybody cares about everything being the best possible that technology has to offer right now. And that's just fine! It's just fine to be happy with something that's unique and fits your needs even if all of the specs aren't the best of the best of the best.

7

u/MLOSDE 6d ago

Mine too I can take a cancelled oct 23 Slot pls

5

u/Latitude57 6d ago

Why are people freaking out ? Phone isn't even out yet. Who knows maybe a few apps will get the update in the next few days.

1

u/ad33zy 6d ago

I’m not freaking out. But I’m considering waiting until the second iteration of this

5

u/Haz27 6d ago

Lol

3

u/Station0fPlay 6d ago

Yes, please, ima need about 4 million of you to panic cancel. Thank you in advance.

3

u/StandardCalendar6130 6d ago

Nah, I have 14 days to see if I want to keep it.

13

u/iiB3An 6d ago

People are really stupid if they cancel based on someone's opinion...

7

u/zenexo 6d ago

How are reviewers pointing out apps aren't optimized for the duo so far and buyers seeing they don't like that and the utilization of the cover screen basing it on someone's opinion? It's really stupid to see it that way. These aren't movie reviews they're tech overviews for $2,000+ device.

7

u/iiB3An 6d ago

Exactly. It’s a fucking new form factor. Apps need to adapt and optimize, just like they did when the iPhone X was released. That has nothing to do with Apple; it’s on the developers to update their apps to support it.

-1

u/Humble-Heart-5302 6d ago

why are you assuming people are cancelling just because apps aren't optimized?

1

u/zenexo 6d ago

Because there's plenty of people talking about why they're cancelling and it has nothing to do with the direct opinions of other people.

2

u/Competitive_Sky_4513 6d ago

So if someone choose to buy Duo based on someone’s reviews, does that also count as stupidity 🤷😒

1

u/_jen_nie_ 6d ago

Shhhhh just let them do it 👀 we’ll get faster 🤫🤫🤫

1

u/spider-jedi 6d ago

Why are they stupid? Isn't that the point of reviews?

If multiple reviews mention something that is a deal breaker for a person there is nothing wrong with cancelling a pre order.

You sound like a fanbou saying stuff like that

0

u/hawks7393 6d ago

I used Samsungs foldable phone for a week. I travel a lot and do a lot of outdoorsy stuff. I hated bringing the foldable phone to the beach and the gym. It caught a lot of sand and it felt bulky. To me personally, the foldable phone was an overkill. iPhone duo camera is trash and big screen is an overkill. I decided to just upgrade to the iphone 18.

0

u/rlockwich 6d ago

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I’ll think about your opinion, while debating on OPs opinion and hopefully I won’t be influenced reading your opinion and their opinion to make my own opinion.

0

u/LSUstang05 6d ago

Bingo. I'm also going to give it the 14 day return window to see if I want to keep it. I think I'll know within the first few days if it will help optimize my workflow. I'm making the switch from a Pro device to the Duo so that I can compose emails easier and utilize some websites I use for work without the need to pull out a laptop.

If the Duo can deliver on those items without having an absolute dog shit camera, I'll keep it. If it doesn't appreciably improve my workflow, I'll return it and grab an 18 Pro instead.

4

u/JustOneDeep 6d ago

Using it for 14 days to see if I like it

2

u/crepecheck 6d ago

I hope as many people cancel as possible because right now my delivery date of 2nd - 9th Nov hasn’t budged an inch and I’m keen to get it sooner 😄

2

u/LenardH 6d ago

How many people watched a movie that had a bad review and liked the movie a lot ?

2

u/FastLaneJB 6d ago

I must admit a lot of the reviews were a bit more negative than expected but then it's mostly been about the apps or that various things are a step back from the Pro phones.

These feel obvious to me but when they compare to other folds with the fold 8 being the obvious it's got better cameras, faster, more battery life, better screens, magsafe, IP68, etc.

Oh and the one handed comments. I've been rocking the Pro Max's and I cannot one hand type on that and this is a bit wider. It might be short and squat but it's still a two handed device and I don't mind that because Ive not been able to one hand type on a phone for a long time.

1

u/Spiritual-Tree9038 6d ago

No 2nd thoughts but the app thing surprised me a little bit tbh.

I didn’t expect 100% adaptation on day 1, but Apple has a funny way of never making you feel like something is half baked over there at Cupertino. This however, does make it seem that way. Feels a little messy, and whether you like Apple products or not they just don’t do that.

1

u/iamnewtoreddithelpme 6d ago

None of the reviews were that concerning. In the end devs need to update their apps.

1

u/FutureBack1 6d ago

My service gives you 30 days and I feel like that’s plenty of time for me to decide if I like it or not. I’m not stressing the reviews, but I’ll admit that some of the highlighted things, especially the cameras and sounds bother me.

The app aspect sounds like it will be frustrating at first, but I’m not too worried about that. I had the first iPad and I remember a lot of apps taking a while to update. But that was also a big shift. I imagine the tools today are going to have most apps of any prominence updating fairly soon.

Especially when Apple starts to promote the “optimized for duo” about your competitors.

1

u/red_vette 6d ago

Youtubers in 6 months. "6 months later, how the Duo perfected the folding phone"

1

u/goldfouledanchor 6d ago

I didn’t pre-order and will try my luck out on launch day to get one. I hope more people cancel.

1

u/Top_Paint7442 6d ago

Apps are crappy, but once you actually receive your Duo, most apps will have a Duo version.

1

u/Bubbly_Sort849 6d ago

I was really hyped about the Fold 8, almost switched from iPhone (After 10+ years) to Android just to use the Fold 8. However, I took the time to try it out multiple times and really think about it's use case. How would I use this more? Would it make things harder or easier on me? Would it be better? Ultimately, I decided that no, it would not do any of those things. Sure, I may be able to watch a movie in a nicer format the few times I fly every year... But that's about it. Then I saw the iPhone Duo, which is thicker, and wider than the Fold 8. I immediately knew I would not get better use out of this vs my 17 pro. It will be harder to deal with one-handed due to width, it will be uncomfortable to use folded due to thickness, and again, how often will I use it to multi-task or use it opened other than watching a movie or a show or reading? It just doesn't make $2,000+ sense to me.

1

u/velvet_funtime 6d ago

the real losers: the flippers

1

u/Oppositeofhairy 6d ago

I’m just glad you all are the ones being apples beta testers for the one I would eventually consider buying only after you all spent 2000 to find all the bugs.

1

u/Parthorax 6d ago

I wish even more people would watch these videos and decide to cancel. No, not for the memes to jump the queue, but because not many casual consumers even watch reviews and they will buy it and then go on socials and cry and complain about exactly all these issues reviews are pointing out.

1

u/vaibavm 6d ago

I just watched the reviews and I can’t wait to have my phone on the 23rd lol?

What do you people not like about it?

1

u/gorkt 6d ago

I haven’t seen an overly negative review yet. Most of the reviews just spell out the negatives of any foldable, that it’s a compromise device. For a foldable it’s excellent. The software will catch up within weeks.

1

u/Alternative_Wing7898 6d ago

Over here crying in Jan 29th delivery date.

Please cancel enmasse.

1

u/Alohamorahz 6d ago

Keep cancelling, sheep! Mine gets shipped faster 😆

u/Tosata 6d ago edited 6d ago

I was a day one purchaser of the iPad when the first version ever came out, and most of the apps there were just iPhone versions. Blurry, pixelated, sized just for an iPhone, black bars all over. And now mostly if not all apps are designed for iPad as well. So what do people expect from a first time product, as this is a foldable dual screen phone, not just the same form factor but bigger (ie. iPhone to iPad)?

Also something people might not be aware of, there’s a reason why app support might not be the best right now. Considering the frequency of data breaches and data leaks, Apple would never give out their developer kits for a dual screen phone unless they were entirely ready to release it. Cuz if these kits were given say years ago to fully get this duo ready, then there could’ve been leaks from the developers and then people would’ve basically just not buy phones from Apple until the dual screen announcement. Just the possibility of that lost profit would upset so many of those execs at Apple.

So not saying that I defend the lack of support on day one, but from a business perspective, it makes sense now about the lack of true app support for iPhone duo like it was for the first iPad…

1

u/Dox_mom0649 6d ago

It's probably going to be a month till I get one so a lot of the problems might get ironed out by then. If I don't like it I'll send it back and get a 18 pro max. The only thing that bothers me has to do with the camera and the only way I will know if I can live with it is to try it. I think I will be so impressed I'll be keeping it.

1

u/CharlieKirksN3ck 6d ago

From the Apple dev website

“Starting April 2027, any apps or games submitted will need to include screenshots for iPhone Duo.”

1

u/DragonWarrior07 6d ago

😂fuck all that i just hope they all forget about in person pickup so I can snag one from the store lmaoooo

1

u/This-Is-Huge 6d ago

Cancelling now so you can move up the queue!

1

u/Bambule247 6d ago

After watching the reviews I’m as hyped as before.

1

u/DaWeeSleepyEmu 5d ago

Things with hinges break faster than things without them. And the reviews are bad enough to make spending $2k for a middling phone in this economy is a waste.

1

u/tsh_49 5d ago

What reviews? I’m out of the loop.

1

u/Necroticjojo 2d ago

Is this a Samsung sub?

1

u/dallen13 6d ago

I have a dec1st-8th. But I can go to verizon, save an extra $400 and get a dec 18th delivery today.
Crazy my delivery hasnt been moved up

1

u/Tissy_Dee 6d ago

Neither has mine

1

u/BaronVonNes 6d ago

My delivery date keeps moving up. It was originally end of December now it's mid November. I think people are second guessing such a big hardware change. I'm not happy about the camera, a flagship phone should have the flagship camera, but overall, it's an amazing piece of tech that will rapidly have apps natively support it.

3

u/1nternetTr011 6d ago

more likely just logistics timeline becoming more clear and apple would rather move shipments up than delay them.

3

u/Davey488 6d ago

My shit hasn’t moved up at all.

2

u/Dinovius 6d ago

I want the phone so bad

But I do social media for my own YouTube and for a few car dealerships

I do have dedicated cameras but it’s soooo nice to just pull my 17 Pro Max out shoot Pro Res Log and really make it look stunning in Final Cut.

I just, god I can’t give that up.

I know Apple tho, in a year or two they’ll eventually come out with the DUO PRO

and everyone’s duo today will just feel….. basic

So maybe then.

It would cost me 300 bucks to upgrade via T-Mobile for the 18 Pro Max and I’m not even caring about that even with variable aperture now. That black tho is nice I have the blue and it’s fine

But god for the productivity part of my business?
Man I do want that

But I have an iPad Pro. I think I’ll just start using that more to get the vibe of it all lol. I really should anyway it’s the original M1 chip and still flies as an iPad and I love using it as a monitor for black magic cam

See? That’s the thing! I review cars and shoot with a dedicated camera but I film my talking head videos on the iPhone because I can use my iPad as a monitor with controls. The phone shoots log, and I put it in my teleprompter

Sure the depth of field isn’t as good but honestly with good lighting I have and the log format letting me color grade it still comes out so dope

Plus I have the 2TB option so storage is so good I never worry about running out. If it’s a large file when I’m done I store it on my long term NAS storage but otherwise I don’t even think about it.

But god I do deep down have the urge to have this damn phone lmao

1

u/BaronVonNes 6d ago

You're absolutely right on them releasing a flagship version with a real camera in a year or two. Purposefully leased it for 24m because of that.

1

u/Dinovius 6d ago

I would , but I dunno. I think imma get my 17 pro a new case out a new wallpaper on and redo my Home Screen

I feel if a lot of us do that with a recently newish iPhone and maybe dust off our iPads like, ok we gotta carry two devices but I think that’s more than enough

I’m watching Mr. Whose the boss right now on his review and his theme is “trade offs” and it’s a great device but a jack of all trades master of none

I just can’t give up the pro features of phone. The amount of times i got pro res shots last second happened because the phone was in my pocket. And I ain’t rich I can’t rock both lol. Also defeats the purpose of carrying one device.

My iPad works great has Final Cut on it handles documents and planning I take it with me more than my laptop for most outside tasks or planning and come home to my Mac to professionally edit

I’ll give this one one year and see what the update is next year.

1

u/Least-Middle-2061 6d ago

The only thing people are second guessing is whether or not they wanna drop that kind of cash on a phone. The brokies will cancel their pre-orders

1

u/DeathBlade94 6d ago

Damn. My date has not moved once yet.

-1

u/AdHistorical5101 6d ago

It’s a complicated situation. I am very eager for this phone, but the reviews have made me potentially re think my desperation. Mrwhosetheboss really delved into the downsides and, although app optimisation will largely be fixed, I still can’t get over the blank side bar which will likely remain, and how my main usage which is multitask and media usage may not be as much of an improvement as I’d hoped. Simply put, a trade off is a trade off, I definitely have more to think about and I’m kinda thankful for my December pushback so I have time to fully see.

6

u/nekosama15 6d ago

Stop letting other people decide ur life for u. Get it yourself try it and make up ur own mind. :)

0

u/AdHistorical5101 6d ago

Would love to but unfortunately the device hasn’t released yet, it’s quite expensive, and if you haven’t noticed quite hard to obtain 😭 these are just prior to release thoughts, I’m sure issues will be addressed and a more complete look will come later, which I can wait for 😊

2

u/n0b0dyh0me 6d ago

Oh, so you haven't preordered, I take it? Then just wait a while, yeah. You're good, dude.

2

u/Kind_Management1805 6d ago

MrWhoseTheBoss review was trash. Poor take. Somehow looked worse than his Chinese foldable video.

The Duo is a the end of the day a foldable it has every upside and downside of the form factor. Being an iPhone will only bring more polish to the experience. It won't change the pros and cons

2

u/Jtaylorftw 6d ago

Him talking about app optimization on an unreleased phone for the first 5 minutes of the video, as if it is totally surprising and unimaginable, definitely not at all expected or understandable, made any opinion he could ever have totally invalid for me.

1

u/AdHistorical5101 6d ago

I don’t think it’s so crazy to expect (a month after announcement and however many years of development) to have a little more optimisation, especially for an early review product, but yes it was never gonna be perfect I understand

1

u/Jtaylorftw 6d ago

If it were Apple making the apps I would also have expectations but the developers of apps being slow to the punch has nothing to do with the device and outside of Apple paying the developers to update their apps there's nothing they can really do about it. I got an iPhone X on release and so many apps looked like garbage for literal years, but now that aspect ratio is the standard across almost every app. It does suck but it's just the way it works, either you wait a few years or you suffer

1

u/Cowhide12 6d ago

The side bar won’t remain blank. It’ll become a used piece of the phone.

0

u/VannaBanana92 6d ago

Same. Lol If you don’t cancel, you’re going to hell. Especially the white 1TB! Everyone with Dates before Nov 6th, you’ll be cursed if you don’t!

0

u/RedRavenCG 6d ago

Or get it, regret it, and give it to one of us!! I want one; if I could afford it, I'd have my mitts on it right now.

0

u/ZeroVoltsGiven 6d ago

To mitigate creases do not fold your phone… that’s why it’s called Apple Duo and not Fold.

-5

u/StormTroopB 6d ago

I might cancel cause I can’t get behind the plastic screen

9

u/pembaThePanda 6d ago

Good. Go ahead and cancel.

-8

u/StormTroopB 6d ago

Ok thanks I will. But first I will sell my per order for 4000 dollars on eBay. Thanks.

6

u/LargeDan69 6d ago

Yeah tbh good idea

1

u/StormTroopB 6d ago

Agreed, thanks.

0

u/VannaBanana92 6d ago

If you have the white 1TB, I heard those screens are extra plasticy looking. You should cancel asap.

0

u/Johnwesleya 6d ago

You ordered something that’s $2000 and you didn’t know that it had a plastic screen before?

-5

u/WhyAmIDoingThis1000 6d ago

this product is a bust. it was only held up by scalpers. noone is paying 2500+ for a bad mac mini nobody ever used anyways

2

u/HBCDresdenEsquire 6d ago

My sole requirement of “can it play Old School RuneScape?” Has been met, so I’m pretty happy with it

Ima be real with you the fact that Apple released a foldable, at least based on history, suggests that this is the way of the future for nearly all companies. It most certainly is not a bust and I’d be willing to bet money that in 5 more years foldables will take over if not majority than a plurality of smart phones.

Foldables have been around a while and they didn’t take over because you have to compromise to get it. I’m sure it’ll get more popular but not touching the main iPhone
