If you are submitting a request for help or advice please read this first.

If you are posting a request for help or advice make sure you provide enough details so others can help you. Things like model numbers, pictures if you can provide them, relevant details about what you're trying to protect, etc.

For example, if you're asking for help with a pre-installed alarm system make sure you include the Make and Model in your post. If you don't have that information provide pictures of the keypad / control panel.

That said, do not post personally identifiable information. Do not make yourself a target to doxxing. Don't post pictures or information that contain names, address, or PINs. Keep yourself, your family, and your property safe.

Sub rules have been updated

As the sub continues to grow, it felt like a good time to put our community rules down in writing. This gives everyone an opportunity to see what's expected of contributors, and hopefully stave off any misunderstandings in the process. For the most part, they're pretty straightforward:

  1. No personal attacks. This seems obvious, but calling a user names is going to get your post removed. Remember that we have a lot of newbies coming here for help with improving their home security; let's welcome them and share some knowledge.
  2. Contribute to the discussion. Make sure your post is meaningful. It must somehow answer OP's question, be relevant to the discussion at hand, or at least be about home security in general. Low-effort posts like "Ring sucks", "Wyze rules", or "12 gauge" are a violation of this rule. We're not going to zap every post that veers a little off topic but if you find yourself debating Android vs iOS, it's probably time to take the thread to another sub. Because everyone knows Blackberry OS is the best.
  3. No personal identification. We don't have the luxury of knowing all sides of the story, so refrain from posting information that can be used to track someone down. This includes posting things like "I don't want to name any names but the CEO of SomeFakeCompanyName LLC tried to break into my home".
  4. Disclose your business relationships. If you mention a company and you have any relationship other than being a customer, you must disclose that in your post. This includes but is not limited to being an owner, employee, contractor, supplier, or affiliate of the company, or being in any way related to such.
  5. Don't spam. This includes but is not limited to posting affiliate links, self-promotion, attempting to solicit customers, offering to give quotes, and soliciting private messages. We don't give "third final warnings" here.
  6. Support your claims. If you accuse Company X of secretly monitoring your cameras, or you think Company Y is sending all your data to a foreign country's intelligence service, that's fine -- but you must include links to reputable sources that support your claim. Reddit comments and other social media posts are generally not "reputable sources".

This sub tends to be pretty well self-regulated, so these shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. But if you have any questions, feel free to send us a DM! And as much as we'd like to be everywhere at once, we can't. So if you see a post or comment that violates one of these rules, please report it so we can check it out.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2022: Due to an unending barrage of crypto spam that the Reddit admins have been unwilling to address, we have implemented a karma floor for posting here. To post or comment, you must have at least 50 karma.

Need to stop my roommate from entering the room. Renter.

Hi all, at my wits end here. I‘m already looking into keyed door knobs but the issue is the current doorknob config.

The current doorknob has a drive in latch, which means it doesn’t have a faceplate or the recess for it. It basically is just a bolt sticking out, as seen in the picture link.

I’m looking into keyed locks but they all require a faceplate. They don’t offer drive in latch. I can’t drill into the doors/walls, so I’m trying to find a workaround (if any) on securing the latch without the two screws. Does anyone have experience with this, or know a mechanical workaround?

Picture: https://file.garden/akDZMsP4F2RE4RSC/knobs.jpg

I would appreciate any suggestions at this point to secure the room when I'm not home.

Note: Sadly my landlord doesn’t care and won’t help me with the issue.

i’m 26f, i live alone with two cats on a ground floor apartment. im feeling so anxious and today i found out the tenant before me got robbed, i think from the kitchen window? he had it open i think? i’m not sure.

someone before lived here for a decade without criminal incident but this is really putting me on edge. should i move out? how can i protect myself? j have an inside security cam, and im thinking of buying extra window locks, if that’ll help? they already lock but i dont know if theres better things i can be doing.

I’ve also ordered black out window clings so nobody can see in, but is it better to have them off and keep the lights on? i’m not sure?

Looking for a non-invasive door lock for bedroom

Recently I’ve been having my room get invaded and getting judged for my room while I’m not home so I am deciding to buy a lock for my door that allows me to lock it from the outside that way I can lock my door when I’m leaving for work, and only have a code to lock it. I’m looking for something that can’t just be unscrewed and taken off and something that doesn’t require a key because I’m worried the person invading my room will just buy an identical key to get in anyway. Something that would be easy to install would be preferably as I’m not used to handy work

Quick question about PoE cameras and internet outages

If my internet goes down, will my PoE cameras still record to the NVR as long as everything has power? Or does losing internet mess with the recording too?

Just trying to understand how it works before choosing a system.

Upgrade DSC Powerseries alarm DSC PC1832 to use cellular?

I have a "DSC Powerseries alarm DSC PC1832", an old security system from the 2010s: https://www.geoarm.com/pc1832-dsc-powerseries-security-system.html?srsltid=AYCX9vKDzs0-TXf1FRZYiRkZQ8WXcYFO7OgeT-LJLkNjZBJh94ZOLQc2

Currently it requires the landline to call authorities (when the alarm goes off and the pin is not entered). Everyone in our house has a cell phone though so we want to cancel the landline, however, the alarm requires it. How do I get the alarm to use cellular communication?

Didnt realize putting up one camera could turn into an HOA issue

I was looking into putting a camera facing my parking spot since its right outside my condo, but apparently anything attached to the exterior walls needs HOA approval. i went through the rules and now im not even sure if they'd approve a small camera by the window.

My living room window faces the parking area so im thinking about using a camera that mounts inside the glass without drilling anything or touching the outside of the building. has anyone tried this for watching a parking spot? im wondering how well it works at night and whether the HOA could still have an issue with it.

Carrying Qolosys Panel to India by Airplane

Can we carry Qolosys panel 2 to India. We use that Qolosys panel 2 at home here in Canada. As we have switched panel here, so thought to setting up old panel in my Indian Home. Can we do that? I mean from security perspective, is there any issue to carry it to airport or something like that?

We can unplug the battery, and can keep it in carry in. Also thinking or getting couple of door sensors with me. Is it okay? Have anyone done that previously?

Note: This question is not about the subscription, setup, I am aware of that. Already using it with home assistant without any subscription. It is more about rules and laws for carry that device.

This company is awful

I call this company last month and explain to them. I would like to have a security system installed. I explained which monitors I wanted, or what features that I wanted. And got a price quote

Hey also told me the technician can come out in the morning and give you a run through of everything and then go over it all and then install it. If you want, if not, they can leave no pressure

Installation guide gets here who is sick or has allergies. But I had to give him an entire box of tissues, I did feel bad for him. His nose was just snotty and gross

He tells me it shows me everything. And I was like, I don't want all that, and he said, well, that's what his work order said. Well, I'm telling you what I know. I ordered since I'm the one who called your company for the service. I said you're trying to sell me the whole home system. Every piece you have and I don't want that. I only want these two cameras and then the door and window

We go over the price of everything. And he tells me it's going to be like a hundred and twenty dollars a month, and I was like, wow, I was quoted sixty six dollars a month

And I asked him, if you take your fingerprint, smart home door sensor off, what would that bring us down to cause? I really didn't want it, but I will take the other things

He tells me, well. Mine is the smart home fingerprint thing and home automation set up and system. You're back down to the sixty six monthly fee okay set it up

He again asked me if I still wanted the outside camera. I said, yes, I want. He's like, you know, it's hardwired. Yes, I understand that. That's exactly what I wanted was a hardwired camera. Yes, sir. Yes, that's what I wanted

I told him I wanted to indoor camera, and they said the nest bell doorbell was free great, and I got the little hub extra did not get the automation and doorbell doorkno

I was charged $85 roughly up front. While here, they also have to make sure your um card works properly with their system. You cannot use cash app venmo. Paypal, you have to use a like a bank card, basically, or a regular credit card

So we do that, and we put it on a regular credit card which they seem to have cut off this card, though, is tied to my contract

My contract was four thirty six months. Total. With everything was roughly 2400 dollars for the thirty six months

Today I get an email that says a payment cannot go through 41 dollars

Well, that's odd, because my bill is 66

I call the card company up and ask Em. What's going on? What this car? They said, yeah, they don't

Take this type of card anymore, which was a one pay card Mastercard. They don't take chime cash app. Venmo none of

Anyhow, i'm glad they did it to themselves. And stopped taking my card. Because now all of a sudden, they're singing a new tune that I owe 107

I said my bill on ADT here on the security app said 66, and they said, yep, that's just for the service. I said that is not what I was told. I was told and we went over it and here in the end of the entire document. It says the entire bill, your pay in full monthly after is 66.

Then, in small writing about a page down, it says something about $41 and $1500 equipment fee, but this is nowhere on their A. D. T app that has the bill for the equipment and a bill for the service. I could have bought this equipment for like $400 of Amazon. Myself for the Google Nest hub and the camera

It's insane to me that they didn't tell me. No with equipment and fee as a $110. No, they don't say anything, and if they were able to take my card number and charge it. Today I would have never noticed

So they laughed at me when I called, and they were like. No, your service is $66, but you need to pay for the equipment. I would have bought the equipment off Amazon for a couple $100. I don't need you to do that. These things have stickers on them. And I could stick them to my windows myself. I didn't need to him to install anything. Except the one hardwire camera. He did not want to do if you have a dt. Or any other security, you ask them to show you itemizing, not just for service because I asked them, what is my monthly bill and they only gave me my service fee, except when I asked him, what would it be monthly? When it had the home automation doorknob handle thing, and for some reason that was a hundred and ten dollars, but it went back down to sixty six, when we took that piece of equipment off which doesn't make sense to me,

then he lied

Apparently, it doesn't matter that he lied. It doesn't matter that the order he told me was put an incorrectly. None of that matters. He also sat here and told me how much he hated his city. How awful people were about grifting? And trying to get over or not, understanding even what they're doing. He's one of them

The camera caught everything but stopped nothing. What actually makes someone leave?

A guy tried my car door handles last week and my camera filmed the whole thing, but by the time I saw it he was long gone and all I had was footage. It made me realize my camera only documents, it doesn't intervene, and I'd rather have one that does something in the moment. I keep seeing cameras with spotlights and sirens meant to actively scare people off, and I'm curious how that works in real life. Has one of these ever triggered during a real incident for you, and did the person leave? I'm trying to get a sense for what active deterrence is like before I buy.

Need Wifi bridge that provides PoE power for PoE Camera

Long story about why not just get a wifi camera, but does anyone know of a combo PoE injector and wifi bridge I can plug a PoE camera into and effectively make it wifi? I could power the camera with a barrel connector and just use a regular bridge, but wondering if there is a combo so I can run one wire.

Nvr setup advice (budget brands, ndaa), Thoughts of Uniarch? Thoughts on dahua (not ndaa)?

(small piece of info, I'm Mexican, living in Mexico)

main concern, cyber security vulnerabilities, due to organized crime and stuff

secondary concern, budget, very tight

I've been seeking for budget friendly cameras, and so far I think both Uniarch and Dahua are the best options for me

* I've read great stuff about Dahua, but I also discovered they're not ndaa approved, is it really that bad? (remember main concern)

* Uniarch seems to be NDAA approved and also very affordable, and it's something I can get here

* Both seem to be okay-ish, but I'd like to know your thoughts

I found cheaper kids (very very cheap), with lots of cams and stuff, but they seem to be white brand, so I guess I better seek for the brand stuff

Woke up to my car door sitting open. Someone went through it in my own driveway

Woke up this morning and the passenger door of my car was sitting slightly open. Someone went through it overnight, glovebox dumped on the seat, nothing was really missing, but I still feel off about it. I just can't believe it happened only twenty feet from where I was sleeping. The camera over the garage caught it, but it's pointed at the wrong spot, so I got the back of a hoodie walking off and that's my entire evidence. Now I'm wondering where the camera should have been so it can actually get a face. When you covered your driveway, what angle and height finally got you something usable when it counted?

Recommendations for security cameras (PoE)

Hello,

I’m looking for a security camera system for my home. Crime in my area has gone up, and I’d like to have footage as evidence if anything happens to my property or my family.

What I’m looking for:

PoE cameras (strongly preferred)

4 cameras to start, with the option to expand to 8 later

DIY-friendly, since I’ll be installing it myself

Reasonably priced, nothing high-end or overly complicated

No Ring or Wyze

I’ve been looking at the Reolink PoE on Amazon and they seem like a solid option, but I’m open to other suggestions. If you’ve used Reolink or something similar, I’d appreciate hearing how it’s worked for you. Thanks!

Something's moving in my yard at night and I can't figure out what it is

It started maybe two weeks ago, this soft rustling right along the fence line, always between one and three in the morning. I put a camera out there thinking I'd get my answer, and every night it's the same thing: a dark blob drifting across the frame, then nothing. Most mornings there's a fresh dig mark by the fence or the trash can knocked over, so something's definitely real, I just can't tell if it's a raccoon or something I should actually worry about. My wife says animal, but it looks too tall to me, though I can't see anything. How are you all figuring out what's out there when the night footage barely shows anything?

Weekends are for family but my mind is still at home

Taking my kid to the park or grabbing food together is pretty much our usual Saturday plan. Nothing fancy, just getting out of the house for a few hours.

But I always find myself wondering what’s happening back home. I got a wyze cam recently, thinking it would make me worry less, but now I somehow check it even more haha. Most of the time there’s nothing going on anyway.

The verge covered the new baseus u2 pro. Would a tracking spotlight be more effective than a regular motion light?

I read a piece on the verge about the new baseus u2 pro. It has two 3k cameras, one fixed and one that uses active tracking to follow movement, plus a spotlight that follows the person it detects.

Most security camera lights I’ve seen just turn on when they detect motion. This one actually follows the person as they move, which seems like a more proactive approach to deterrence. Do you think that would be more of a deterrent, or would it not make much difference?

Home security in the great 2026

Hey guys,
I need a bit of advice when it comes to keeping my home safe. Recently we’ve moved into a new neighborhood and while it’s very nice, apparently there have been 15 break ins spanning just the last few months. I want to find some way to make my home feel a little safer but with all the technology out there I fear some options will make me feel less safe.

I get pretty worried about having what essentially boils down to a flock camera staring at me everytime I walk into my home. I live in a pretty wealthy area while clearly driving the cheapest / worst car (hoping that helps us avoid targeting) , we almost always have someone home (although that will change shortly for a few months) , I have a big scary pitbull (although apparently they’re poisoning dogs now). I am curious what this sub has found that helps deter break ins or invite the feeling of security especially in an age where digital security can also feel like an uphill battle.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

Looking to upgrade. What's modern home security nowadays?

I have a detached family home. For the last 15 years or so we've had a keypad alarm. You open any door on the main floor - the alarm goes off - you have need to enter your pin or the local authorities check-in by calling your home phone.

Is this still ok for home security? I've noticed online most people have cameras at their front door and in their backyard. Ring Camera I think. Is this for home security or mainly to watch how packages are delivered?

Cellular smart lock and camera

I have a storage space in my rental property that i want to monitor remotely with a camera if someone breaks in but also something i can use to secure access that i can remotely unlock for maintenance work that might need access to the area.

They can be two different things- one for the door and one for the inside

i don't need full high definition i just need to know if someone breaks in. cant be too expensive but ok if it needs a cellular plan per month cost

edit: need cellular no wifi

update: sounds like there is no fool proof way to secure this area. with time and intent if someone wants to they can breakin. in anycase the stuff being stored is household stuff and a furniture books toys etc., not worth the hassle of all the extra precaution if it can be broken into anyway.
