Meta AI Generated Images Are Now Banned

Post image
5.1k Upvotes

From this point forward any images created with the use of AI are banned from the subreddit and will be removed by moderators.

This includes images completely generated by AI from the ground up as well as things such as individual AI generated assets or filters used by users in the process of creating an image. For further details on this policy refer to this guideline in our Wiki.

You probably remember this recent post regarding the future of AI generated images on this subreddit. It had previously been in a sort of grey area where it wasn't explicitly forbidden but mentioned in Rule 5 as a possible example of low effort content that may be removed by the moderators:

5 Post with purpose

Posts here should educate, inform, spark discussion, showcase good effort, etc. Low-effort posts such as AI generated coats of arms, “X in the style of Y”, wildly unrealistic hypotheticals or fictional scenarios, and “just because”-type posts may be removed with no notice

A recent increase in AI generated images then led to increased discussion among the community with some calling for increased measures of identifying such content while others further advocated for it's ban entirely.

As a temporary measure we then decided to add a mandatory "AI Generated Content" flair that should be used to designate such content while also inviting the community to engage in discussion about a permanent solution in said post which also included a poll where users could decide between an explicit ban of AI generated images or allowing the regulated use of AI content.

After seven days the poll concluded with a result of

128 - 84

in favor of banning AI content - which is a 65% majority.

While the result of that poll was specifically not intended to be binding for any permanent policy that may be agreed upon in the future it - along with the comments - did clearly show that the majority of the community generally favored a complete ban which was also reflected by the attitudes of the mod team.

As such we have now decided that any images created using AI will henceforth be banned and removed from the subreddit. Any content that was posted before this policy went into effect will remain intact and won't be retroactively removed.

As a result rule 5 has been slightly rephrased to say:

Posts here should educate, inform, spark discussion, showcase good effort, etc. Low-effort posts such as “X in the style of Y”, wildly unrealistic hypotheticals or fictional scenarios, and “just because”-type posts may be removed with no notice. Further, images created using generative AI are explicitly banned and will be removed in order to retain a high standard of authenticity that this historical art and science deserves.

As it was intended as a temporary measure and is now obsolute, the "AI Generated Content" flair has been removed.

Due to the potentially controversial nature of this announcement, comments will have to be manually approved on this specific post, similar to what we did with the initial poll.

We hope that this is an understandable policy and that people will remain civil and uphold it regardless of their personal views on the subject. If anyone personally believes that AI generated images should have a place in heraldry then they're fine to express that opinion and should not be ostracized - however it does not reflect our official stance as a subreddit.

Again for a more detailed explanation of this policy where some potential questions are already answered please consult the Wiki.

Thanks for everyone who voted in the poll or expressed their opinions on the matter.

Cao de Benós de Les CoA

Coat of Arms of the Cao de Benós de Les surname, a rare triple-barrelled surname originating from the towns of Benós and Les in the Aran Valley (historically part of the county of Ribagorza in Aragon, and today in Lleida, Catalonia). This is an ancient and well-known hidalgo lineage, with records dating back centuries in the Chamber of Castile and the Crown of Aragon. From this family tree come the barons of Les and the marquesses of Rosalmonte, with branches spreading out to southern France and Antequera in Málaga, where one line linked up with the last heir of the counts of Argelejo. Plus, various branches have historically held the Grandeeship of Spain (Grandeza de España).

The barons of Les were legendary for their fierce loyalty to the crown through centuries of wars, from the conquest of the Kingdom of Sobrarbe all the way through the reigns of James I, James II, Philip IV, Carlos II, and the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 1700s. During that last conflict, they were one of the very few families in Catalonia who stood by Philip V of Bourbon, taking a lot of heat while defending their rights against the allied armies of Austria and Germany. Because of all that loyalty, they earned the honorary title of "the Loyal" (leal). Special shoutout to Don Ramón Cao de Benós, who proved his absolute grit during the 25-year war against France.

As for the shield itself, it is a party per pale layout. The first side features a field of gold with a rampant lion in gules, contourned and sinistered by a rootless green cypress. The second side features a field of azure with a gold lion next to a silver tower, topped with a silver crescent moon and three silver stars. It is all wrapped in a silver bordure carrying the family speaking motto in black letters: "Conserve tu lealtad Cao de Benós", which translates to preserve your loyalty Cao de Benós.

According to data from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE), this triple-barrelled surname is still kept as a first surname by 5 people.

This particular version of the CoA is inspired by the historical illustrations found in Francisco Pifferer's Nobiliario de los Reinos y Señoríos de España from 1858. I created this rendition recently, inspired by those classic armorial plates.

Hope you like it ✌🏻💯 I will be sharing more designs I made some time ago very soon.

OC My first serious attempt at designing a coat of arms for my family. Thoughts?

Post image

Hi everyone!

I’m Indonesian, and I’ve recently been working on designing a coat of arms for my family. We don’t have a European heraldic background, but I’ve always admired the tradition of heraldry and how families can preserve their identities, histories, and values through symbols passed down through generations.

My family already has an emblem inspired by the Japanese kamon, representing an eye and a flower. We use it on our family signet rings, and I wanted to incorporate it into a more traditional European-style heraldic achievement without changing the original symbol.

For the shield, I chose three pairs of spectacles Argent on an Azure field, arranged in bend. My family has been involved in the optical business for over two decades, so spectacles seemed like a natural and meaningful charge. I also wanted something simple and recognisable rather than an elaborate shield filled with unrelated symbols.

The crest features our existing family emblem, while the mantling follows the Azure and Argent colour scheme.

The motto, CONSTANTIA ET PRUDENTIA, means roughly “Steadfastness and Prudence.” These represent two values I wanted to associate with my family: perseverance through adversity and discernment in making decisions.

There’s quite a bit of family history behind those values, particularly ancestors who experienced considerable hardship but continued to support their families and remain faithful to their convictions.

I’ve tried to follow traditional heraldic conventions while creating something that reflects my family’s own identity, rather than claiming any European noble ancestry.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, particularly on the heraldic correctness, composition, and whether anything could be improved.
Thanks!

Personnal coat of arms

Those are my personnal (modern) coat of arms. They are a bit shitty because Inkscape and I are not good friends...
I do have some ancesters which had their own, but I'm from a minor branch of a minor branch etc..., so here you go.
The guivre is a symbol of my part of town (downtown Provins has the guivre, and uptown has a dragon), and the rest is more convictions and religion on a personnal level.
As for the motto : Festina Lente ("Je me hâte lentement", in french).

The french description would go like :
De pourpre au chevron versé d'or chargé d'un serpent ondoyant de sinople, accompagné en chef d'une croix recroisetée au pied fiché d'argent, la croisée chargée d'une rose de gueules boutonnée d'or, et en pointe de deux fleurs de lys d'argent posées en pal, rangées en fasce

If I made a mistake (I haven't done heraldry in nearly 10 years), feel free to tell me ^^

Fictional Coat of Arms of the Boroughs of New York if the City had emulated York's CoA

The coat of arms of the boroughs use party par pale, with the white cross on red field with the five blue lions for the five boroughs on the left and each borough's own symbolism is in the field on the right.

Brooklyn

From the Dutch for "broken land" the field holds a green field over wavy white and blue pattern to symbolise the wetlands that were there before the borough.

Bronx

The likely origin of he name is a Scandinavian settler with the surname of Broncks which means spring or fountain. The firld on the right is black with three fountains in vertical.

Manhattan

From the Lenape word likely meaning "the place to gather wood for bows" the field is chechy white and gold to symbolise the boroughs wealth and grid layout with a bow overimposed on it.

Queens

The borough is named after Queen Catherine of Aragon. Her coat of arms was way too complicated so I simplified it to hold just the vertical bars of Aragon.

Staten Island

The borough's name comes from "the State's island" in Dutch, so the field holds the banner of the Royal Dutch banner - blue cross on orange field.

The first time I came across the blazon was a few years ago and I immediately thought it was a bright example of a firm heraldic design. I especially like the idea of using two tinctures, having simple charges in the shield and the crest that's a combination of only two elements.

If you ask me, simplicity is the key!
