Changes to old Reddit login flow
Hey folks - this morning we rolled out a change to certain login and authentication touch points that you may have been using to access Reddit. Specifically changes to old.reddit/login, the inline login form in the top right of old reddit, as well as a few other standalone authentication touch points.
For some context behind these changes - our newer authentication surfaces (such as www.reddit.com/login) are more secure and utilize reCAPTCHA which helps us better identify malicious activity, so we’re swapping to these updated and secure pages instead of maintaining a separate login flow for old.reddit. We’ll also be redirecting users back to old.reddit after authenticating, so you do not need to use any redirect extensions or swap the URL back to “old” unless you wish to.
To quell any concerns - we’re not removing old.reddit and have no plans to do so.
Please note - our updated login pages use Google reCAPTCHA in the background and some browser extensions may interfere with logins. If you have trouble logging in, your first step should be disabling your browser extensions (you can then enable them once logged in).
Thanks!

I'm all for making the login more secure, but I would like it to work. I'd like to know how to use the home button, and stay logged with the old reddit. Right now, I am logged in on this page, I see all my subreddits across the top and shows my username. When I click on home in the 'my subreddit' row I go to a top page in old reddit and I am logged out. Is the redirect broken?

Is there any way to remain on the same page after logging in? In the past, you could click "Log in" in the top right corner, enter your information, and then the same page would refresh. Now, after I log in, it redirects me to the main home page instead of the one I was just on. I have to hit the back button multiple times to get back to the page I was just on and then refresh it manually for the login to take effect.
As a moderator, I leave several tabs open at all times for quick access. This change interrupts my workflow each time I open my browser. It's a minor gripe, but it does make things a little more inconvenient for me.

Hi! When you log out, are you still on the same page?

Thanks for the explanation u/TheOpusCroakus.
We’ll also be redirecting users back to old.reddit after authenticating, so you do not need to use any redirect extensions or swap the URL back to “old” unless you wish to
Please be sure to redirect to old reddit if the user was using old reddit by default when navigating to www.reddit.com. Right now, if you use old reddit at www.reddit, it will redirect you to new reddit at www.reddit after login.

I accidentally logged myself out. While successfully being able to sign in, was not redirected from sh.reddit to the classic(old) site per my settings.
It took some faffing, but am now back to reddit.com displaying the classic website.
Not ideal, really.

Thank you for the update. There were questions about that when it changed a week or two ago.

Congrats, you found another way to pessimize old.reddit.com. Quite the accomplishment at this point.

Well, I'm glad it's not just me or my computer that's taking an extra couple webpages to log in when I used to be able to just do it without loading a whole new page.
But this is stupid. You can have authentication while embedding it into the same webpage like it was.

You broke old.reddit.
The login form was moved to a less convenient place.
Front page doesn't register you as logged in on old.reddit.
Can't vote on front page posts without a 10-second redirect.
Can't click anything on the front page without a 10-second redirect.
When old.reddit dies, the site dies, because the redesign is nearly unusable.

The (old) new reddit is broken now too and this is nonsense because the latest build is missing the... what is it called, the selection that allows things like spoiler tags, italics, etc, there's no way to manage comments this way.
Something on it made me completely locked out of being able to log on on Firefox so now I'm using reddit on chrome and I have two browsers open for no reason (probably because it's 100% white on black instead of light grey on dark grey but there is probably more to it than that).
It also bears mentioning the latest build for some reason is affecting my dyslexia and is very exhausting to read, for some reason the words shimmer now. Also that colour overlay on certain subs is exhausting and trashy looking.
You can't look at images because they don't scale unless you physically download then to a folder
Get your act together, this is ridiculous and inexcusable. This website is extremely unpleasant now, I'm surprised you aren't dropping members like flies over this, since the amount of complains in this sub about the new UI has been a flood since this began on the Ap. This is garbage.

You should probably mention that it is no longer possible to create an account with an e-mail, as a result of the changes to the sign-up flow.

Bring back the login widget on old.reddit.com.
Does anyone prefer new reddit to old reddit?
Stop trying to force people to new reddit.
The day old.reddit.com stops working is the day you will see a big chunk of people leave.

Yes. I literally cannot follow conversations on new reddit. The conversations are the only reason I am here.

This is a disgrace. The new login doesn't work in any capacity, with or without extensions or VPN. This isn't about security or improvements, it is just another "you'll do things the way WE want" moment from the Reddit staff. You're literally making your website worse out of spite.

Stop degrading the mobile web experience deliberately. Hiding the “reply” button behind a three-dot menu is pretty darn transparent.
I will never download your app and pulling tricks like that will ensure I will always be a detractor with regards to your app.

To the Reddit Administrators who obviously do not care what people like:
I really dislike this. Why? Because new.reddit.com is gross and this takes longer for me to login. Plus I don't get redirected. And I read that you are doing this to force people to disable ublock origin. Gross. That's my unsolicited $0.02

Now it's impossible to make accounts without email...
In our community we invited candidates of the EU Elections and being able to create their account for them while leaving them the choice of adding their own email (or just use them as throwaways) really helped us convince them to come(the idea of making an account is a lot for old people)
Do you have any plans to revert back the email-less accounts?

The changes are horrible and your redirect doesn't work as I disable those features.
This will impact folks implementing CIS/NIST/DISA type security protocols in their corporate and personal environments.

Just a heads up, the new login REALLY hates Tor browsers. Had to constantly retry until it finally went in.

I can't login to old reddit period, not even using TOR or VPN. If I can get login to accept my password, it just gives me a popup saying if I'm not automatically redirected to follow "the link". I'm not redirected, and when I click on the link I'm sent to a generic page, not my home page (home page isn't an option to choose), implying that I need to login again to see my subs.
Changing passwords doesn't help. I can log into new reddit, but not old reddit. This feels very, very deliberate and I'm not happy.

That's a fancy way of saying you're taking a step toward phasing out old reddit while keeping the domain name.
I don't see how else to interpret it. Changing a critical part of the infrastructure of old reddit use to be new reddit, while saying "we're not removing old.reddit" is lawyer language. Yeah, you aren't removing "old.reddit" the domain, okay, I can believe that. But you are removing a component of what old reddit is and placing the user in new reddit even if briefly in the process of doing so.
It's this kind of patronizing "dishonest honesty" that makes it exhausting to communicate with a business. I don't blame you as an individual, it's probably a process above you, but it is nevertheless tiresome and disorienting to contend with. Mind games when you just want to know why something changed and what to expect going forward, and if it's compatible with where you're at.

I was one of the people impacted by the old.reddit login issues last week and was pleased that Reddit was offering again the old login flow.
Currently, most devices I use are functioning with the new configuration you've shared about here, but one device is showing persistent problems even after clearing caches, restarts, and disabled extensions.
From what I can tell, I think reCaptcha is giving a false positive on an old iPad I am troubleshooting. Considering that some users are reporting lack of website connectivity with mobile devices in this thread, could this be related?
Also, it was noted last week by some users that reCaptcha and the new site design do not always function with screen readers for the deaf/blind community. Has the Reddit team consulted with anyone regarding accessibility for these users if reCaptcha fails their needs?
As for myself, I am not disabled as such, but it is possible that such users may not be able to give feedback right now if their logins are hindered. What can they do if such problems arise?
While I know I can live with having that one old device fail to load the login page (Safari on that old iPad loads the page header with the Reddit logo in the top left and nothing else, completely blank), this may not be the case for others. For users that rely on such older technology, is Reddit inaccessible for them here onward?
In advance, thank you for some transparency on this matter. I hope Reddit will do its best to ensure accessibility is not compromised. I know you all are likely working hard on these issues!
I bring up these topics in case anyone reading this while unable to log in may be able to see replies that will aid their troubleshooting.
I hope these concerns are helpful for everyone involved!

Your flow changes are preventing logins when using VPN. "Invalid username or password" even though both are correct and literally worked fine just a few hours ago. Resetting the password via email link does nothing, just end up with a new password that also doesn't work.
Amazingly, and after wasting a LOT of time, I tried using my email instead of username EntrepreneurOk6166 and it logged me in. How is that even possible?
Get it together folks.
