Media Tropes I hate the normalization of plastic surgery.
I know plastic surgery has been a thing for a long time, but I’ve noticed how plastic surgery marketing has cleverly shifted its advertisement to kind of a “female empowerment” thing, like a “do what you want with your body” type bullshit. And I see girls my age fantasizing and shit about getting surgery like it’s as normal as going to the fucking hair salon
‘Most’ people who get plastic surgery get it to make their face more aesthetically pleasing, but I do acknowledge deformed people who need their face fixed because of a freak accident or medical condition,
anyways I still think getting plastic surgery is conforming to the patriarchy by changing your natural features into something that is more socially admired, and all these dumbasses acting like it’s female empowerment when the main reason for plastic surgery is because your insecure and you don’t fit the societal norms for beauty. And it also infuriates me that plastic surgery on my fyp is targeted towards young girls like me which is absolutely sick. And I’ve noticed on tv that they try to advertise Botox like it’s some fucking medical treatment.
I miss when plastic surgery had a bad reputation. And when I try to say something about it people say some bullshit like “Let women do what they want with their bodies😕” or “ Let women breath 😣!!” It’s conforming to the patriarchy behind progressivism

I agree with this so much. The way
And it's also created this weird
There's nothing inherently empowering about making someone feel insecure about their natural appearance and then selling them a procedure to "fix" that insecurity. Obviously people should have autonomy over their bodies but we should also be able to question the social pressures influencing those choices, especially when the marketing is reaching increasingly younger audiences
I wish we focused more on actually embracing our natural features instead of constantly finding new things for girls to be insecure about and then selling them a solution for it :(

I notice the generic face a lot or lack thereof in movies I watch, I love watching older movies so anything before like 1990 you saw a lot more facial diversity in actors in movies. A lot of them used to look like real people lol

i'd love to get smaller ribcage and big boobs

I love having small boobs honestly . They fit my body. Theyre probably my favorite part about my body lol. I used to want them big when I was younger, but I’m SO glad I never went under the knife. There’s so much up keep with them too, have to replace them after some years and then there’s people getting sick from them too, like Michelle Visage

you are skinny haha. they are probably nicely shaped. mine are tiny bit tuberous and i'm fat so my stomach sticks out more than my tits.
i wouldn't mind them if they were round and firm. but theyre not, theyre soft and look cone shaped

u/Reddit_grill 27d ago
girl I'm a 32DD trust me, you don't want big boobs. They may be aesthetically pleasing but if I had the money for breast reduction surgery, they'd be gone long ago 😭
9
u/Fair_Beat3617 27d ago
girl i'm almost flat and fat.. it's horrible. i don't want "big big" more like a visual c cup.
i feel like an ogre looking like this and it's kind of ruining my life.
16
u/Reddit_grill 27d ago
girl I get you but don't be so hard on yourself and don't be so mean to yourself about it you're probably being way harder on yourself than you deserve 🫶🏽🫂
4
u/MB_Town7 27d ago
C cups are still bad. Those are big. Being flat has its appeal, trust me, and you shouldn't opt to making your literal ribcage smaller because, what, you think it'd look better??
Now, I'm planning on reduction if my medical plan allows it as a C-D cup. Why? Well, mainly I'm short as hell and the proportions do not help me physically. They get tender, they are heavy, they literally prevent me from breathing in the wrong positions. They hurt horrible, make nauseas worse because of the pressure on your chest, they bounce too much and too easily (I'm a dancer and this is what I hate most). Sometimes, they even cause nauseas. I need to wear sports bras every minute of the day to get some peace and quiet, but even the ones that I wear will not prevent me from the inability to breathe or the nauseas I sometimes get because of them, due to how they're from the pressure/weight of them. Oh, and I've forgotten to mention the back pain. I get shoulder pains in the constant, lower back pain, waist muscle pains and spasms. Before, meanwhile, and after my moon cycle.
Trust me. I am sure you'd like a bigger chest just because you're insecure about it. But doing it cuz you think it'd look good not only feeds into that same insecurity, but it's also just not idealistic. You're fine as is. Everybody envies something, and you don't understand what I'd give to be as flat as you. But you don't need any betterment. You need to fix the perspective on yourself.

I’m a 34J and 100% on this, thank you! I love my figure, and I support any women getting reductions or implants they might want. Frankly, I don’t have back issues and I know someone else my size may… that’s up to genetics, and I think everyone should be able to tailor their own comfort. Not into the whole “don’t do it” mentality about confidence being one size fits all
3
u/Fair_Beat3617 27d ago
thank you! i feel a lot of people just think of the convenience and not the aesthetic. yes, my breasts are more convenient physically. but mentally they bring me a lot of stress and pain. before when I was younger I didn't care that i had small boobs. i knew they were an unattractive feature but i didn't care.
now that I'm married i feel humiliated every time I have sex with my husband to the point i refuse to have the lights on. i just want to stop feeling like this. i want to feel feminine and not like a little boy when I lay down and i'm completely flat. it's starting to make hate my husband and others
2
u/Teaandsnakes 27d ago
Ya know what you only live once and if ya want bigger boobs go get you some bigger boobs😤 Idk why everytime a flatter girl says they want bigger boobs bc they're everyone comes rushing to try and convince them otherwise. Like if you've thought this through and your SURE getting implants will help your confidence go ahead and get em🙂↕️
7
u/Fair_Beat3617 27d ago
i just dont think they realise their advantages and only focus on the disadvantages. they don't know what its like to be flat as an adult woman, and the insecurities it causes. i mean, i can't watch tv without somehow seeing a joke abt how ugly small boobs are. i had to stop watching anime for this.
i dont even want to be confident i just want to be neutral about my body. i dont want to cry and obsess over how my chest looks. i want to just go on with my day without thinking about it
3
u/Lucyrexy 27d ago edited 27d ago
I think people also overestimate big boobs. I’ve always had a large bust (around a DD cup), and I hated how my ex used to "brag" about my breasts or talk about how jealous other girls were of them. In my experience, having big boobs doesn't exactly boost your self-confidence. Other girls envy you, not realizing that once you pass a certain size, you can forget about buying nice bras. By 2021, I had reached a 38G and asked to be put on a waiting list for reduction surgery. I was a 38I (yes, that size actually exists) and had a breast reduction in 2024; I have absolutely no regrets. I’m not denying the insecurities that can come with having small breasts, but the opposite is a huge pain, too.
Of course, it depends on the cup size you’re after. Anything bigger than a DD, and I think you’re asking for trouble. With a "big" cup size, forget about cute, sexy little sets and get ready for BEIGE—because, naturally, melon-sized boobs are "hideous" and "don't deserve" pretty, delicate lingerie (or so a saleswoman claimed).
I, too, have stopped watching certain anime series because they annoy me with breasts that defy the laws of gravity and make fight scenes look ridiculous. No, you don't pull off Cirque du Soleil-worthy acrobatics with two watermelons strapped to your chest—you’d struggle just to run!
Animes and mangas should rethink their standards, because it presents a horrible view of physiology and creates the illusion that having a very large bust is "cool."
4
u/MB_Town7 27d ago
The issue with getting implants that people see is the fact that so many do it to boost their confidence, which in theory, sounds incredible. But why do we have to change our bodies to feel confident? Or feel attractive? Why do we have to change to feel approved by other? Why is our natural body not giving us that comfort even when we all know what one finds beautiful is as subjective as bodies are different?
2
u/Acceptable_Menu9966 27d ago
Because we just don't like some parts of our body. The answer is simple

I suppose it makes their waist look skinnier? I have no idea
7
u/ViSaph 27d ago
This is the reason. Some women/girls have a "rib flare" where the lower ones jut out a little. If you're thinking it's heartbreaking girls are feeling the need to remove bones in order to have a more "perfect" waist I agree. My younger sister is 21 and has a ton of filler in her lips and got rid of the dimple in her chin and it makes me so sad.
→ More replies (10)6
u/AntiqueLetter9875 27d ago
People have done it but it’s more the extreme body modification crowd that considers it.
It’s weird to me that the creator in the image wants so much temporary filler instead of an actual nose job or implant, but then is thinking about something so extreme and permanent like rib removal.
5
u/Tre_ti 27d ago
It's barely even a thing it's so uncommon.
Anecdodally, I met someone who had her lower ribs removed, not for cosmetic reasons, but because she was in a car accident, where the impact to her lower torso shattered the ribs and the doctors removed the bone fragments because it was so bad they couldn't spint or repair them and there was a risk of the bones puncturing her organs.
She said not only did it not make her waist smaller, but she has constant pain.
I can't imagine someone doing that voluntarily.

I used to be super insecure about my nose and really wanted a nose job for years. My mom would tell me I had her "old nose" and she meant it in a good way, except she had a nose job and didn't like her old nose so I never took it as a compliment she intended it to be. My dad would say I would grow into it because he also didn't like how big his nose was as a kid, and I even found out my grandma and great grandfather also had a nose job because they too hated the way their nose looked. In a way, it made me feel more sad... Everyone in my family that had my type of nose hated it. I started feeling bad for my own nose so I told myself I would never get a nose job, and would just accept it and love it. It took a while, but now I don't care what shape my nose looks like and I'm just happy to have it.
Stop trying to look like everyone else, you're perfect the way you are.
8
u/Odd_Blacksmith5933 27d ago
I also wanted one through my entire teen years, but I’m so glad I waited because in my 20s I really did grow into my features. Part of why I didn’t do it tho is in case I ever have kids or niblings with my features, I wouldn’t want them to think they should get plastic surgery :(
5
u/xhephaestusx 27d ago
If it helps most women I've had a crush on had an unusual nose in one way or another
1
u/OkamaGoddessFan943 27d ago

5
u/VisitSecure 27d ago
I have a Roman nose I think its called, (it has a bump in the middle which was what made me insecure about it a lot at the time cause I thought it made me look weird) my mom had the same, and I'm pretty sure my grandma did too. (I think my great grandfather had a flat nose at first though) They all got a nose job, but I decided not to, and honestly I'm glad I never did now.
2
u/locked_from_inside 26d ago

Plastic surgery and celebrities everywhere are influencing a lot of young people (mostly women) who are insecure about their looks, and that’s really messed up,
83
u/Blanc_Otaku 27d ago
Plastic is to girls what Steroids are to dudes
35
u/mangongo 27d ago
This is actually frighteningly accurate, as both seem to have a stigma attached to them so they create this false philosophy that taking dozens of different supplements is still considered "natural", just like how some celebrities are trying to insist that certain procedures aren't considered "work".
3
2
u/Carmelioz 27d ago
Expect most men don’t take steroids? I’d say plastic surgery is wayyyy more normalized
10
u/Admirable-Ad7152 27d ago
Steroids and other PEs are huge topics of discussion amongst younger guys though, that's the problem. It's the teenagers and 20 yr olds talking about it. Obviously not all of them just like not all girls get cosmetic surgery, but a scarier amount then you'd usually assume. It's big in the red and black pill communities too.
3
u/throwawaysunglasses- 27d ago
Young guys are really into plastic surgery since they’re all brainrotted teenagers who love Tate and clavicular lol

id also pitch glp’s, i get a new ad for one every fuckin day and im tired of it frankly, i wish people would either just be happy being overweight/fat/chubby/whatever they personally wanna call it and either BE HAPPY LIKE THAT or fuckin put some work in, instead of ruining their digestive system and their appetite for who knows how long, not to mention the body dysmorphia that comes with it
4
u/accountvondirnicht 27d ago
First, they make you think you have a problem, then, they sell you the solution to this problem.
The thing with this is, that it wouldn't work if most people would think critically about these kinds of things. However, most people are stupid and easily influenced, thus making the strategy of the first paragraph super easy with some time and marketing (propaganda) budget.
56
u/No-Jellyfish-1208 27d ago
Bad idea... at 18, you aren't even done growing yet, your face is gonna look different and all these fillers, implants and whatever are gonna move.
Also, I legit wonder, where do these young people get money from for these procedures too? Are their parents paying for that or what? And if yes, why do their parents think it's a good idea to fund it...?
20
u/disillusion_4444 27d ago
Right like my face doesn't look like it did at 18 now that i'm almost 23, I think for most people your face naturally kind of slims out as you lose the baby face so trying to get the face of a 30 year old model you look up to when you're 18 is going to make you look weird as hell by the time you're actually that age.
Like when people get buccal fat removal in their early adult years, it's basically just speeding up the aging process.
11
u/arapaima-fishie 27d ago
Literally. I’m 23 and I’m sometimes still floored by the reflection in the mirror because it’s so different from the reflection I spent so long staring at while I was 18 or 19.

28
u/sleepy-hooman 27d ago
Exactly. People act like it’s solving the problem. “You don’t like something? Just change it!” But really it’s just making it worse. If you don’t like how you look, the solution is to stop caring what strangers think of you and just love your unique features (or be healthier, if that’s the problem), not to change your body permanently to fit arbitrary societal standards.
7
u/Different_Delay_8243 27d ago
"Just stop caring" tell that to my crippling dysphoria bruh 💀 its not about other people, my nody quite literally doesnt match who i am and how i feel, its disgusting.

I don't think they were referring to gender dysphoria in the same category here lol. There is a difference between life-saving gender affirming care, and doing shit like this post and thinking that's normal (which the one person who responded to you clearly didn't get either). So yeah I don't think this original commenter was telling trans people to just love their bodies, this conversation is about a COMPLETELY different issue.
6
u/Andthanksallthefish 27d ago
people make plastics surgeries look like choices of free will but in fact it's not. why would a woman hate a certain feature of their own? because the beauty standards has been trained by patriarchy and women are made to hate themselves
6
1
u/Intelligent-Gold-563 25d ago
There are plenty of reasons someone may not like one of their features. Stop bringing every back to patriarchy all the time.
Also, it's not limited to women either --"
1
u/nvr2pink 25d ago
i think there’s a very fine line.
as someone who wants to get surgery, i think there’s a big difference between just wanting to get a procedure done to elevate how you look a bit, and wanted to get work done in order to try fix your insecurities or fit in.
imo i think there’s nothing wrong with wanting to optimize how you look, maybe just a simple lift, maybe botox, etc
but i will say… a lot of these lines get blurry. especially when we hear MINORS talking about wanting to get surgery once they turn 18, because in reality surgery is not so simple.
thinking “oh! i want 6 different surgeries, and i know that will make my face perfect!” is very… risky. you don’t actually know how those results will look like until you’ve had a consult, and until you actually get it done. which some people will need revisions as well.
not to mention… it costs money obviously, what these people gonna do when they’re 18??? save up for surgery instead of prioritizing building wealth??! loathe on the fact they can’t afford it “yet”.. which in this economy, depending what they want, it’s gonna take a while.
i understand if someone can look at their face and ask, “hm, what do i like about my face? how can i like it more?” and their baseline is already a positive or neutral outlook. maybe noticing 1-2 weak points, still enjoying themselves
but they might still consider, “hey! once i’m an adult and am settled down, maybe i can look into this. talk to a plastic surgeon, maybe this surgery actually won’t be good for my face, and that’s ok too”
basically.. i think fixed beliefs are what’s causing most issues for people. and we see this in mental health, how do we treat thinking disorders? we have cbt. we reframe thoughts, we accept.
there’s a big issue if you can’t see multiple different outcomes for yourself. or think, “this is what i need, and asap.” without considering nuance.
so yes, damaging if used wrong. i can give so many other examples.
plastic surgery is not inherently done because someone “hates themselves”. plastic surgeons are supposed to also evaluate their clients for this issue.

i’m imagining what all these generic looking people will look like 30 years from now, lower rib removal and infinite lip filler and botox cannot be healthy. nose jobs and jaw/brow work is pretty safe, but definitely shouldn’t be done just to match the beauty standard, bc that standard will be completely different in as little as 5 years
16
u/Frogs_Logs 27d ago
It's not healthy, mentally or physically, Botox is literally injecting poison into your skin
1
u/Plenty_Leg_5935 27d ago
Capsaicin and caffeine are literally poisons as well, not to mention the varriety of medication derived from poisonous stuff. I agree with the sentiment, but judging a procedure based on the vague chemical properties of the thing used during it is stupid. Especially with things like botox injections that have a variety of geniuene medical uses
There are geniuene reason to hate on purely cosmetic botox, you don't need to reach for "chemical scary"

I hate the normalization of it because of how dangerous many of the procedures are. It's genuinely a risk not worth taking unless it's for a medical reason/reconstruction
lowkey would consider ridding of thy lower ribs if there ain't any major health effects (there probably is), but that'd be because they cause me physical pain and not cus I care about cosmetics
8
u/nightwingoracle 27d ago
I knew someone who had to do it for medical reasons (strain injury from being a swimmer) and the recovery was rough.
3
2
u/Intelligent_Can_3022 26d ago
I personally dont mind plastic surgery. But I do think the normalization of it considering how dangerous it is is crazy.
Like how 18 year olds do all these surgeries, even though their face will change a bit over the next few years anyway. Like getting buccal fat removal, just wait 5 years.
And I know weight is a touchy subject and its not easy to just lose it like that. But there's so many woman doing these crazy surgeries, that losing a bit of weight would give them the same affect. I dont know the details of how they work either, but does your body even keep the surgical changes long term, if you dont change your lifestyle to fit? Like how do you maintain abs if you get them through lipo, and dont go to the gym.
Not only is there the health/ death risks, but theres also a risk it will go wrong and you will look 'worse' as something has moved around weirdly, or rejected.
2
u/Rie-igotnamefromrice 26d ago
YES. They need to at least teach the risks of both during and after the surgeries, possibility for failure, how it'll age, ect. Things go wrong and people deserve to know what they are signing up for. Several of them need you to come back for maintenance, which needs to be emphasized for the cost and what happens if you cannot meet that
I really hate that society makes children feel like they need to be changed so drastically :((

u/Lastsynphony 27d ago
There is an amazing plastic surgeon that is very popular in youtube, "Doctor Youn" (that is the name of his channel) and I love that he explains the dangers of taking plastic surgery so lightly and warns about the dangerous procedures that become trending in social media, but basically what he explained is that naturally (unless that for example, you had an accident that gave you a deformity, or by a genetic condition) all of your physical traits combine with each other, specially the facial features, and the problem is that many that do so many procedures, in reality they have a very low self-steem or body dysphoria, and when for example, the nose is changed, that will alter the rest of your facial features, which will give them more dysphoria, and that is how a single procedure ends up becoming 100, and plastic surgeons they usually don´t request that the patient brings them a psychological analysis that clears them out of body dysphoria, depression or problems with self-steam, before they agree to do a surgery

This is the post I agree on the most on this whole sub. THANK YOU.
I feel so bad for young girls, what they see, what they watch, how society makes us think natural women are UGLY.
I never got any work done, I’m 31 and I never regret it. Do I ever feel insecure? Fuck yes. But I don’t want an instagram face. I don’t want to get cosmetic surgery just so society will think I’m valid.
We encourage young girls and women to put effort into their looks instead of hobbies and talents…. Making girls think being influencers and doing OF is normal. Yes, it all goes hand in hand.
I hate how it’s viewed as empowering when it’s not.
I hate seeing women get surgeries and then get comments like:”OMG what a glow up!”

Yeah, especially since some stuff (like that damn botox) is actually harmful long-term, I heard it makes face very stiff and, as person ages, the effects of becoming old would suddenly be much uglier, which means what? Right, even heavier surgery! This shit should be illegal to advertise, but, of course, it's too profitable, so…
I personally think that the only justified use for any surgery is when there are actually some health problems, either from birth/genetics or an accident, otherwise those women are just tricked into spending money and ruining health to match some imaginary "standards".

I mean, if she goes through with all of that instead of choosing to love herself or improve her self esteem, it’ll be on her after she regrets it in a few years.

And whenever I see before and after photos of people who have gotten things done to themselves, they always looked better before. It's sad and weird. It's gotta be some kind of mental illness.

I'm a feminist so I think women should be allowed to choose what they do with their bodies and lives. However it doesn't make those choices exempt from criticism when they do harm. I'm not entirely against plastic surgery, but I agree with you that the current attitude towards it supports the patriarchy and largely has nothing to do with female empowerment.

The concept of getting botox and fillers while you're 18. YOU ALREADY LOOK YOUNG BECAUSE YOU ARE YOUNG.
