When a video has captions and a voice, do you follow both, or does one win?

A question for the people here who use captions and some hearing.

I'm Deaf, and I run a review series where every episode is signed, captioned, and voiced by an interpreter. I'm about to test whether the voice actually matters, by posting the same clip with and without it and letting the platforms split who sees which.

My guess is that for a lot of HoH viewers, the captions and the voice do different jobs. The captions carry the words. The voice carries the timing and the tone. But that's a guess from someone who doesn't use the audio.

So when both are there, which one are you actually following? And does a voice ever get in the way?

The episode also covers Voxally, a marketplace app where vetted interpreters pick up and voice Deaf and HoH creators' signed content. Not sponsored. I booked this episode's voice through them, paid by myself.

Hi guys. I just had a theory and wanted to ask if anyone else has had this experience. Thanks in advance for helping me out

When I was 3 I had a ton of ear infections which eventually led to a moderate-severe hearing loss. I have worn hearing aids since then and as you all know, a lot of struggle comes with that.

When I was 9 I started taking piano and over time, learned that I had a great ear for music. I could hear anything and play it almost immediately. This skill helped boost my confidence and has landed me in some pretty cool places throughout my life.

I landed an awesome job running a music program at a facility that worked with children who are deaf/hard of hearing.

A young student came in to learn piano. He had the same hearing loss I do. His ear was phenomenal. He didn't really care to learn to read music but he could pick stuff out so easily. I had to stop playing the pieces beforehand because he would just remember how it sounded and play it by memory.

I found it interesting and really started to think about this. (I realize the sample size here is low so it might be nothing). But I thought about how I would have had to learn to interpret speech. Inflections I imagine has a bigger role in our understanding of speech than for perhaps a hearing person.

Inflection is pitch and I lost my hearing when my brain was developing. Could it be possible that being forced to focus more on inflection, that it also helps develop an ear for music?

Does anyone here have that gift or is my theory most likely some kind of cope? Just wondering.

I look forward to your responses whether it proves me right or wrong. Thank you guys!

A lot of these streaming apps subtitles features are nuts

So many apps (specifically peacock which is buggier but even bigger apps like Hulu and many more), will have subtitles just straight up not work. You go click them off and on, still nothing.

I check online and try every recommendation. Usually does nothing. What bothers me more, is trying to find out solutions and people’s attitude about it. Either people lowkey act like you’re imagining things (just because you don’t have the issue doesn’t mean others aren’t). Or even just the way people talk about subtitles, like it’s a frivolous extra feature and not created as a necessary aid FOR deaf and disabled people.

I will deal with it through proper avenues, but it really should be considered more unacceptable to drop the ball on basic accessibility features like this

Just got bilateral HAs and the domes are tickling me - does it go away?

I've got moderate hearing loss on both sides and just got my first hearing aids on the NHS.

I've had them 2 days and while I'm elated I can hear more stuff, they're wearing me down and making me dread wearing them. The domes keep tickling me and if I try to ignore the tickle it just makes me itchy. It's not once or twice either, it's every few mins it becomes so unbearable I have to take them out and itch my ear. Is this normal? Will it go away?

Edit to add: They're currently the Oticon open bass domes.

Captions in the lenses plus speakers in the arms: does that combination work for you?

A question for the people here who use captions and some hearing.

The MemoMind One has captions in both lenses and speakers in the arms, so the words and the sound arrive together. In my latency test the captions ran 1.38 seconds behind the speaker. I do not use the audio, so I cannot tell you how the two line up for someone who does.

What I can tell you: 47 grams, 16 hours of battery, no camera, prescription lenses available, and when they fail, they are still glasses.

Disclosure: my episode. Not sponsored. MemoMind sent a review unit. They did not see this episode before you did.

When captions and audio arrive 1.38 seconds apart, is that usable for you, or does the gap break the sentence?

Could you help me with this survey?

Good day to y'all. How is all going?

I would like to ask for some of your time to fill out this little questionnaire.

It's for a project that I have, and I would like to know if it would be well received among the people it's targeted to. So please, if you're deaf or have any hearing impairment, could you please fill it out? And if you have a son, daughter, family member, friend, or someone you know that has also this con, could you show and help them to fill this survey.

Thanks in advance

Am I “tricking people” into thinking I’m deaf?

So, I’m hard of hearing. I have moderate hearing loss with auditory processing disorder. I have hearing aids and they help a lot, and I can usually communicate orally without too much issue BUT it’s exhausting. When I’m with my Deaf friends and we go out we’re all signing and using our phones to talk to servers, so I usually order food via notes app or some combo of signing/gesture/ voiceless communication with them. If the server is really struggling, I’ll switch to speaking. I’ve never though this was a problem, but while out with a hearing friend today I order at a coffee shop with my notes app, and the server nodded, pointed to stuff to let me pick, and I ordered silently. My hearing friend thought this was not okay. She said that if I can speak and hear “well enough”, I shouldn’t “force the employee to work harder to accommodate me”. I tried to explain that the server didn’t seem even slightly put out, that it was easier for me, the server even signed “thank you” to me afterwards. Even if it had gone poorly, that just means that they will learn and be better prepared for the next deaf or HOH person who has to interact with that employee. They still think I’m trying to “play deaf” and “trick people”. Am I in the wrong?

Can jaw issues cause temporary ear problems ?

Im not sure if wisdom teeth being impacted can cause hearing problems because I went to ENT and dentist back and forth but unable to find a solution and the root cause. So when I went to the ent I was told it was an ear infection and the eusthistsn tube is clogged. But I was also feeling jaw tightness couldn't even eat on the side where the ear is located because it triggered dizziness. I still feel dizziness despite it. And so at the dentist they said wisdom teeth being sideways and upper teeth being near the sinus. At this point I'm not sure what is causing dizziness, jaw tightness even the temple area then forehead and even the neck and shoulder tightness. Like if I chew on that side either it trigger dizziness or irritation spasms happens in the jaw then the temple area and behind the neck. I don't understand why isn't my eusthistsn tube not opening up. As if I feel fullness in the ear. Sometimes I'll hear cracking other days not so much. Because of all this I have brain fog too.

I Don't Want to Feel Ashamed of Wearing Hearing Aids Anymore

I have mild hearing loss, and I got a pair of elehar delight OTC hearing aids last year. They're pretty small and look a lot like Bluetooth earbuds, but I still find myself worrying about whether people will notice them at work.

During meetings, I sometimes catch myself adjusting my hair because I'm worried the devices will be visible.

Honestly, the exhausting part isn't even wearing them. It's constantly thinking about what other people might think of me.

I know people probably don't pay nearly as much attention to these little details as I imagine they do. But when you're still trying to come to terms with something yourself, even an innocent glance or an ordinary question can make you overthink everything.

So now I try to spend a little time looking in the mirror before work and reminding myself that wearing hearing aids isn't all that different from wearing glasses. I try to give myself a bit of a pep talk and remind myself that there's nothing wrong with needing them.

It's a small thing, but giving myself that reassurance has helped me feel more confident. I don't want to feel ashamed of wearing hearing aids anymore.

To anyone else who's in the same boat, I just want to say: there's no need to hide or feel embarrassed about it. Give yourself time to adjust, and try to be a little kinder to yourself.

Why does hearing problems feel like only one side of the brain works?

Does anyone feel like only one side of their brain works as if the ear that gives the problems the most is like that part of the brain just isn't functioning properly as if it feels off. I don't even understand what is causing my ear problem whether it's the ear itself or the neck or jaw or something else. Tired of going back and forth to this and that doctor to specialist. I don't think I have extreme hearing problem but like the left side causes dizziness feeling and brain fog sythoms. Even the jaw on the left side feels tight simple as chewing on that side trigger dizziness and even neck pain happens in the back. I'll hear like crackling when I yawn or swallow. As if the ear dumb is trying to open up. I know my eusthsnic tube is clogged for months now. I don't know how to open that up. Ent doctor said once the eusthsnic tube opens up the pressure equalsizes in the ear and you'll notice how dizziness and brain fog sythoms fade away. But I was also told my ear canal is very narrow and I'm just not sure how do I clean my ears safely. I just cannot use syringe cleaning method anymore. I sometimes feel like my body is dependent on the ear and eye as a connection to feel clarity. Like when one ear isn't fully open I just feel like something is wrong inside of me.

How to hide your hearing aids

I am new to this and not that comfortable, I want some tips for hiding hearing aids. I am a guy, thinking of getting long hair, are there any other ways to do so?

Edit- It really helped to hear your comments, I don't have any person which I know having HA. So I was a little bit embarrassed.
