QUESTION/DISCUSSION Why hasn’t the Dominican Republic contributed to the UN security mission in Haiti?
Not looking to start another Haiti vs. DR debate. There’s enough of that all over the internet. But why hasn’t the Dominican Republic contributed troops or logistical support to the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti? They arguably have the most to gain from a stable, peaceful Haiti.
I just read a Reuters article reporting that Dominican President Luis Abinader offered logistical support to Bukele’s Salvadoran forces deploying to Haiti.
My question is, why only now? Why weren’t they already involved in supporting the mission?
Genuinely curious if there’s a political, diplomatic, or security reason I’m overlooking.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION Do you think Haiti is part of a larger mafia/narco structure?
Hi, I’ve been thinking about something recently. It’s not something people often directly associate with Haiti’s problems, but I’d like to hear your opinions.
It’s not the first time I’ve seen gang leaders showing off their wealth, but something caught my attention in a recent video posted by gang leader Lanmò 100 Jou, where he was showing off thousands of US $100 bills.
It made me wonder: while we might assume all this money comes from Haiti, what if Haiti is actually part of a much larger drug trafficking network?
I’m not saying Haitians themselves are major drug consumers, but destabilizing the country could make it easier for drug traffickers to operate without worrying too much about authorities interfering with their activities.
In the rest of Latin America, fighting drug trafficking has been a major campaign topic for many politicians. But what if, instead of actually solving the problem, some governments are simply allowing it to shift toward weaker countries that the international community pays less attention to?
Could Haiti’s instability be benefiting international drug trafficking networks more than we realize?
What do you think?

NEWS New York seeks $1.3 billion from NovaTech founders accused of defrauding Haitian investors
New York seeks $1.3 billion from NovaTech founders over an alleged crypto scheme targeting Haitian investors.
New York Attorney General Letitia James has asked a court to order Cynthia and Eddy Petion to pay $1.3 billion in damages and disgorgement.
According to state investigators, the NovaTech founders collected more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency from investors between August 2019 and April 2023, while trading less than $26 million on the platform. The scheme collapsed in May 2023, leaving tens of thousands of people, including many in Haitian and immigrant communities, unable to recover their savings.
The Petions fled the country following an August 2025 default judgment.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION What if Haiti relocated its capital from Port-au-Prince to Saint-Michel-de-l’Attalaye?
What if Haiti built a new planned capital in Saint-Michel-de-l'Attalaye (Artibonite)?
Fun fact: Saint-Michel's commune is 613.74 km², about 1.4% bigger than Seoul (605.20 km²). It's mostly rural, of course, but there's plenty of room. It's also inland, at about 420 m elevation.
The idea: Port-au-Prince stays the commercial center, while Saint-Michel becomes the seat of government.
Questions:
1. Should Haiti move its capital at all?
Is Saint-Michel the right spot?
Would a new capital boost development outside Port-au-Prince?Are the benefits worth the cost?
I'd especially love to hear from Haitians who know Saint-Michel and the region.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION What if Haiti offered land to four climate-threatened island nations in exchange for a $200B development deal?
I've been working on an idea I'm calling the Great Humanitarian Settlement Proposal (GHSP) and want honest feedback.
The territories:
🇰🇮 Kiribati → Anse-à-Galets (372 km²)
🇲🇻 Maldives → Pointe-à-Raquette (316 km²)
🇳🇷 Nauru → Île-à-Vache (51.79 km²)
🇹🇻 Tuvalu → Les Cayemites (45 km²)
The structure: Haiti becomes a constitutional kingdom modeled on the Netherlands. Each island nation would be an autonomous constituent country with its own government under a shared constitution.
The deal: A $200B international development fund structured like an NFL contract:
Signing bonus: Released after ratification, for urgent humanitarian needs, security, and setting up independent oversight
Guaranteed money: Held in an independent trust for essential services, health, education, and climate adaptation
Base pay: Scheduled payments tied to infrastructure projects (roads, power, water, schools, hospitals)
Performance bonuses: Paid only when independent auditors verify progress on corruption, security, elections, jobs, etc.
Plus clawbacks, public reporting, transparent procurement, and no single government controlling the money.
Haiti would also seek U.S. guarantees, maritime/EEZ arrangements with the island nations, and recognition of Navassa Island as Haitian.
I'd especially love to hear from Haitians, Pacific Islanders, and anyone who would like to share their opinion on this.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION Misinformation Regarding the Pay of Foreign Troops in Haiti
With all the misinformation being spread online for views, even Haitians living in Haiti are claiming that Salvadoran and other foreign troops are being paid $800 USD per soldier per day. That claim is false.
We don’t know the exact figures for GSF personnel, but we do know how much the Kenyan MSS officers cost the UN Trust Fund for the 21 months they were there per officer.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION France has finally fallen. The French language is much less useful now. Should Haiti replace French as an official language?
France was the epicenter of the francophone (i.e. French-speaking) world. The economic benefits of the French language were all tied to the country's former success of economic superpower. Those days are long gone and France is broke and going through a crisis that it will likely never recover from.
One has to ask then what benefit does French offer to Haiti at this point (especially considering that 90% of Haitians don't even speak French). There's also no other economically advanced country that speaks French as a primary language. Although many countries have French as an official language, the vast majority of the people in the country don't speak the language (i.e. Canada, Switzerland, etc.) So, has the time come to get rid of French in Haiti (like Algeria and Burkina Faso are doing)? There's no point of staying on a sinking ship.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION You wake up tomorrow as the president of Haiti. What would your first five decisions be?
I personally don't even know where to start, it feels like we're so deep in the hole right now. I'm not sure who or what systems are trustworthy at this point, and the normal tools are not available.
1: I'd declare a state emergency, explaining what exactly the challenges and concerns are. It may seem unnecessary or useless, but I think naming the problem out loud is important. Not that we don't know what the problem is, but I think it's the first step in fixing anything. I'd end the address by making a plea to the gangs to cease criminal activity and surrender, and that if they do there will be a path towards rehabilitation.
2: I would work with strategic partners and local community leaders to form a sizable, competent, supplied, and dedicated temporary militia. It would have to be a significant force, a few thousand won't cut it. Ten to twenty thousand should be enough to put actual pressure on the gangs to surrender or be neutralized. Strong oversight and structure will be needed to ensure legality and efficiency. A plan and timeline is crucial.
3: Restoring access and functionality to the airports and seaports will be a top priority, as they're a crucial economic lifeline.
4: Working with strategic partners and local community members, I'd prioritize on helping those immediately displaced by the recent challenges. Providing stability and care, and working on rebuilding their communities and lives.
5: Energy is a major area of concern, I'd work on establishing a reliable and renewable energy grid. Solar and wind systems could be a relatively cheap way of introducing much needed energy.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION What's the overall consensus on Bukele and the mission to rescue the Salvadorian technicians?
What are the feelings of Haitians on that? Positive? Negative?
On one hand we have Bukele doing a military operation in a place where he has nothing to do and one could argue that it plays a risky move on Haiti's sovereignty, not to mention the inherent dangers civilians face during a military operation against a group that doesn't follow engagement rules, in this case, gangs.
And on the other hand, Bukele fixed El Salvador's gang and is seen by many Latin Americans as someone they want in their countries. That is to say, there's an appreciation for being harsh against criminality.
Greeting from Peru. ^.^
NEWS Burkina Faso Overhauls Education, Adds Haitian Revolution to Schools
Burkina Faso has introduced major education reforms for the 2026-2027 academic year, revising school curricula and challenging how history, geography and national identity are taught.
Under President Ibrahim Traoré, the government is replacing terminology it considers rooted in colonial perspectives. In history lessons, "colonization" becomes "imperialist invasion,"
"colonizers" become "invaders," "explorers" become "spies," and "colonies" become "invaded territories."
Other changes include replacing "decolonization" with
"liberation of Africa" and "landlocked country" with "continental country." Terms such as "poor country" and "indebted country" are being removed, while "weaknesses" and "problems" are reframed as "challenges" and "opportunities."
The reforms also give greater attention to African resistance, national history and natural resources.
Among the additions is the Haitian Revolution. Students in classe de quatrième, roughly equivalent to eighth grade, will study Haiti's struggle against slavery and French colonial rule, including its achievements and historical consequences.
Beginning in 1791, the Haitian Revolution culminated in independence on January 1, 1804, establishing the world's first independent Black republic.
For Haiti, these reforms raise a broader question: How does the language used in classrooms influence the way children understand their history, identity and future?
The initiative invites discussion about how Haitian schools teach national history, incorporate Haitian Creole, recognize local knowledge and encourage students to question inherited assumptions.
Changing terminology alone does not guarantee better education. Teacher training, accurate historical instruction and access to learning resources remain essential.

LANGUAGE (KREYOL) Sitcoms Subtitled in Kreyòl?
Hi all! I'm Haitian American and at the very beginning of learning Kreyòl. I'm a huge sitcom watcher, and have had trouble finding Haitian media (please let me know any suggestions!). It would be great to at least have subtitles in Kreyòl for my shows.
I'm thinking of pursuing this for at least an episode of one of my shows (I've been into The Office lately). I would be happy to hire a translator and overlay the subtitles myself. And please let me know if someones alreasy working on something like this.
Does this seem interesting/helpful for language learners or fluent speakers? Please let me know any initial thoughts
