Ask r/guam 🤔 Intergenerational Trauma?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to get peoples opinion on this subject as I am doing an essay on trauma specifically on Guam. Do you think there is an instance(s) of intergenerational trauma on Guam that is relevant (or perhaps not) that is not talked about enough, *or is talked about, but talked about wrongly?*

I was thinking about a possible example, such as religious trauma. (As Guam is majority Roman Catholic)

How has Guam delt with Roman Catholicism and with the sexual abuse history? Has Roman Catholicism and in the way it's treated on Guam, such as in religious families, indirectly has caused trauma?

Besides repression of individuals, I am aware there are also drug abuse problems, mental health issues, etc which are also relevant.

Is there social stigmas, or very niche cultural traditions that has been passed, intergenerationally on Guam that involves trauma? Such as if you don't uphold or align with chamorro stigmas you are outcasted?

(For reference I am chamorro, and have experienced intergenerational trauma within my family. My great grandmother survived a Japanese occupation camp in Palau, before moving back to Guam after the U.S liberation occured. My family has suffered from poverty after and has taken multiple generations to stablize financially.)

Please share whatever experiences you have, and dont be scared or ashamed to share your input. I really appreciate it. Thank you!

Ask r/guam 🤔 UOG ELI: How long does it usually take to complete, and how hard is it to get into a degree program afterward?

Hi everyone! I’m a high school student from South Korea, and I’m considering studying at the University of Guam.
My plan is to enter UOG’s English Language Institute (ELI) first, improve my English, and then apply for an undergraduate degree program, possibly in hospitality or business. My long-term goal is to work at a hotel in Guam after graduation and hopefully build a long-term future there.
I have a few questions for anyone who has attended UOG ELI or knows someone who has:
How long does it usually take to complete ELI? Do most students finish in one or two semesters, or can it take a year or longer?
What level do students usually start at? Does the placement test include speaking, listening, reading, and writing?
I’ve been taking online English conversation classes with a native English-speaking teacher for about a year and a half. I’m comfortable having everyday conversations, but my grammar and academic English are weaker. What level might someone with this background typically be placed in?
After completing ELI, how difficult is it to get admitted to UOG as a degree-seeking student? Can students who successfully complete ELI qualify for a TOEFL waiver, and are there other academic requirements?
How much does ELI usually cost in total, including tuition, fees, housing, food, and other living expenses?
For international students who want to work in Guam after graduating, do you think studying at UOG is a good path? Have you or anyone you know found hotel jobs in Guam after graduation?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual experiences, especially from former or current ELI students. I’m trying to understand the realistic timeline, costs, and admission process before discussing this plan with my family.
Thanks so much!

Ask r/guam 🤔 Cna or nurses on Guam!

I’ve been thinking for about the last decade or more abojt going back to school and getting my nursing degree or even a cna. The reason why I never went full force was after reading all the horror stories of nurses and how draining it can be. Then I considered maybe I should just be a cna or get some sort of certification to step my foot into the medical field without going 10 toes down. What are you experiences? For reference I was thinking about getting it done here on island since I will be here for the next few years before I fully move my family back to the states so I’m not sure if I’ll start working here on Guam by the time I’m done with school or if will be working back there. Can anyone share some of your thoughts or experiences if you think it’s worth it? How much is your pay here on island ?

Discussion 💬 GTA no show for internet installation

I have been with Docomo Internet for a while but due to the no internet issue every post typhoon (It is now back and running without issues) I thought I'd try out GTA fiber as a lot of people are saying it's good and Fiber is available in my area.

10/27 - Date of promised installation between the hours of 1pm to 5pm

1pm to 2:30 waiting. Decided to call GTA to see if they have the right number, they did, so okay will wait.

3:00 to 4:30 still no sign of anyone coming, so decided to call GTA again. They said they need to get back with me as they have to find out if they are being delayed due to prior installations may have taken longer than usual. I say okay and wait.

6:30 Still no call letting me know the status.

I sent a message to their so called chat (I don't think sending through email is considered chat, I maybe wrong but, okay) that no one showed up nor called me to update.

10/28 Get a reply from Customer Service around 8am. No apology, just asking for my 4-digit pin or account number.

Gave them my 4-digit PIN and replied that I am now thinking to cancel my installation altogether. If they cannot show up or call me for an update on installation, what would happen if I need them to come and fix an issue, wait again forever left in the dark?

As I am typing this, it has been almost 3 hours with no reply email. I guess they don't want my business.

For now I will be sticking with Docomo who, in my opinion have better customer service and delivers promised speeds. This is my experience so yours may vary.

PS- Before anyone says to get Starlink, can't do Starlink as I live in an apartment and getting a clear view of the sky is iffy from the balcony.

Discussion 💬 Picky Eaters..what’s your take?

So I have family members that don’t like certain types of food. And I’m not talking about a specific dish, I’m talking like a whole genre. Like one doesn’t like spicy, another doesn’t like raw fish, and another despises veggies. And I do believe that everyone is entitled to their choices of food. I guess I just feel bad that they’ve closed many doors to tasting flavors from different cultures.

Idk what it is, if they got fear mongered about consuming raw fish or medium rare steaks. If they never outgrew their childhood tastebuds and swore off of vegetables, or if they don’t see spice as a flavor of its own. Imagine eating a taco with just the protein and missing out on the fresh, tanginess of lettuce and pico de gallo. Or the juiciness of a med-rare steak. And that kick you get from peppers mixed into your kelaguen or the daigo from your local mom n pops store.

I always cringe inside when I hear the veggie hater order a burger and ask for no veggies, and sometimes no sauce too because the sauce has pickle bits in it. Like do you want the happy meal toy too? Or when choosing a restaurant to eat at, and Korean or Sushi joints are out of the question due to spicy foods/raw fish.

Anyway, do you yourself try to convince picky eaters to give it a try or do you leave them be and just enjoy what they’re missing out on?

EDIT: By no means, would I force a friend or acquaintance that I'm not so close to, to eat foods they're not a fan of. I agree, it may be a dietary restriction, so no biggie. The people I refer to simply say they dont like veggies because it taste yuck..Or they say raw fish like sashimi is gross..And because they're close to me, I give them a little tease like "Ok you 5 year old, or Ok lame-o". Then we proceed to order what we want instead.

Discussion 💬 Door to door Trick or Treat

Where’s your favorite neighborhood to go trick or treating? I’ve heard tales of king-size candy bars, ice-keke, and even money being handed out.

This was probably all back in the day tho..
Now everyone just goes to the malls or trunk-or-treats, to get the same 6 (maybe 10) types of candies. It’s not the same..

But I know there’s still small streets that take pride in hosting Halloween with decorations, SFX, and maybe a variety of treats. Shoutout in the chat! Drop the pin! 📍

**maybe all for discussion tho.. 🤞🏽😩#cuzanothertyphoon

Ask r/guam 🤔 Fro-yo or soft serve places

Pregnant cravings. Any frozen yogurt places left on island? Yogurtland closed down and I loved theirs. I like Fujita Creamery and keep an eye on their flavor of the day but they’re closed on Tuesdays. Anywhere else serve froyo or flavored soft serve that isn’t just vanilla or chocolate?
