MOD STUFF Grey's Anatomy Returns October 15th - Rule & Etiquette Refresher

Hello all,

With the premiere happening tomorrow I just wanted to take the time to remind you that the premiere is happening tomorrow :)

Also I wanted to go over a few things that we with common sense know, but just a reminder on rules and customs. If anything is on this list that isn't in the official rules it will be soon.

Please keep any posts about the newest episode in the stickied discussion thread

This is in particular common with low-effort posts. A character will do something out of pocket or unexpected and we'll get 12 posts saying "REALLY?" about one singular action. Let me be clear, we don't expect every post and comment to be high-brow analysis, but give it some effort. If that's all your post is, then it needs to be a comment. We reserve the right to remove these as needed.

If you see a post that has this issue and hasn't been removed, please report it Moderators do not go patrolling the streets of /r/greysanatomy like you may think. If you report it it will alert us and we will look at it asap. Also, we may leave it up if we feel it is appropriate to do so.

Be Nice to each other Not much to say. Pretend they're sitting across the table from you usually solves that problem.

Explicit spoilers in the title

Just a refresher on this. Don't say explicit spoilers in the title. Just had to ban someone for this a moment ago. This applies to ALL spoilers - even something from season 1. We understand that an old spoiler may be old news, but it's really not that hard to figure out how to word something that doesn't say an exact spoiler in the title.

Have fun everyone and enjoy the premiere!

DISCUSSION Why is Meredith so awful to Amelia? Spoiler

Post image
361 Upvotes

Doing a rewatch and I can’t understand the animosity Meredith has towards Amelia. Yes, Amelia seems neurotic and annoying at times, but Meredith is just so mean to her. I think it was inexcusable that Meredith didn’t call Amelia when Derek was dying in the hospital. The rest of Derek’s family may have been too far away to make it in time, but Amelia was there, she deserved to see her brother before he was taken off life support. Then there’s this scene where Meredith just stomps all over her. What was the point of making their relationship so contentious? It makes Meredith seem terrible.

*Edit- I’m at work so can’t reply to comments but I’m reading along and appreciate the insights/discussions happening

The most infuriating thing

• Upvotes

I’m in a rewatch, from the very beginning, and I’m in Season 3. The MOST infuriating thing Izzie does is not the LVAD, or sleeping with George, or any of the myriad things she does … it’s the not depositing an $8.7 million dollar check until she knows what good could come from it. Park that ish in a high yield savings account until you DO know what to do!! Omg.

I realized they’re is a lot of hate going on to merder, so I wanted to create a little dynamic 🙃 say one good thing about merder or your favorite scene with them! Please if u have nothing positive to say about Derek or merder overall go to another place, there’s tons of places to talk crap about them or Derek.

Season 10 - the fight between Mer and Yang

• Upvotes

I know this topic has been discussed too many times.

But I always like watching this part of season 10 as it feels that it reflects women's reality. At one point or another, you will outgrew someone, or you and your bestie will have different priorities. That's okay.

For me, Yang's comments were true and probably right but under the belt. For a mum like Grey who is juggling things, her words cut so deep. We want to do better but one have to give. I know Yang is not the type of person to babysit Grey and both of them know it.

For Grey, I understand why she reacted that way. She is still on her postpartum era and of course she wants to prove that she can do both parts of her life. Aren't we all? It just sucks when you hear it from bestie (better to have a friend like this than a backstabbing one).

I was happy when they made up. It wasn't the same friendship but they understood one another. No words needed ( or additional scenes from the writers).

I honestly didn't understand Yang at first but after rewatching this season for the 3rd time, I finally understand her.

That's my two cent.

The concept of nicking a patient’s artery to prove a point…I’ve seen a few clips about this particular storyline and everyone ends with something bad about to happen. What the hell😭

FIRST TIME WATCHER Derek Shepherd is the enemy Spoiler

• Upvotes

I am in season 5 ep 18 (right around where he hit meredith’s ring with a baseball bat after losing a pregnant woman in surgery) & I cannot STAND him. Everything up to this point; how he acts like a child, can’t regulate his emotions but expects the world of meredith when she’s gone through a lot more in such a small period of time, trying to kick her friends out of her house, implying she’s a wreck when she’s TRYING her best, etc. This is not romantic to me in anyway it’s infuriating & he’s a man who needs his ego stroked every step of the way. Meredith would do significantly better without him & I hate their relationship.

Bailey running the hospital solo while everyone else melts down is basically small business ownership in scrubs

I have been watching the early seasons again while waiting on inventory shipments, and Miranda Bailey is the character I keep pausing on. Everyone around her is having affairs, crying in stairwells, or throwing instruments across the OR, and she is just there keeping patients moving and residents in line. It reminds me so much of running our ecommerce brand with my spouse. Some days the whole operation feels like it is held together by one person remembering to check the ad spend, reply to the angry customer email, and make sure the product photos got uploaded. Bailey never gets the dramatic monologue about her sacrifice. She just does it. I used to find her intimidating but now I find her familiar. The episode where she gives birth and still manages to direct traffic from her bed? That is every founder who answered Slack messages from the delivery room. I am curious if anyone else watches Bailey and sees their own work life reflected back, or if there is another character who went from distant to weirdly relatable once you had more responsibility on your plate.

SPOILERS I loved the outcome of the custody battle

Didn't want to spoil too much in the title, but i was very happy with the results of the custody battle between Robbins and Torres. I was expecting it to head in the direction of Callie getting sole custody due to the "Robbins is an absent mother" angle they went after in court, but in all reality, Callie introduced this child to Penny only a few months prior. Callie wanted to move across the country and take sole custody just because she wanted to jump into this relatively new relationship. It made a lot more sense to leave her in Seattle, where her original support system is, not to move across the country because Mommy's new girlfriend got a job. What did you guys think about it?

FIRST TIME WATCHER surgeons in the ER

I'm confused about why they have surgical interns, residents, and attendings working in the ER doing random stuff. I watched all of ER all the way through several times and I got the impressions that surgeons are only brought in to evaluate surgical candidates as needed, that they are too specialized and valuable to deal with ordinary ER stuff. I see them doing tasks that I'd expect the nurses to do. Do I just not understand how hospitals work? Also do they not do rotations with interns at Seattle Grace? (I realize ER is very very old.)

Hot take: Cristina is awful to Burke

I’m going to get downvoted to hell, but man I’m rewatching greys after many years. I’m appalled at how awful Cristina is to Burke. She is completely uninterested in him as a person, she just loves that he’s a great surgeon. He tries to get to know her, to be close with her friends, to cook for her - and she is weirded out by anything kind he does and actively is mean to him. I don’t think Burke is perfect at all, but he deserves better than this. She can’t even be by his side when he gets shot!!!!!

I know this is probably a very unpopular opinion. I can’t help it!

FIRST TIME WATCHER I hate Alex Karev with the heat of a thousand suns (no spoilers please)

First time watcher, at S2:E23 and I had to come here to vent.

I think Alex Karev might be one of the most unlikeable characters I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching.

Everyone’s always banging on about how “it’s a good thing he’s so good looking, because his personality is so bad”

He’s not even hot.

I can’t believe I have to get through another 14 seasons with this absolute weapon.

Conversely, I would die for Yang, Burke, and Bailey. Those are my persons.

Spoilers They did Cristina dirty Spoiler Alert Spoiler

She was a robot, so they should have told her it was Henry. She would have gave her all in her magical way and if he still died, would have felt less guilty, because she knows what giving everything was from the time she held her fathers heart as a child. JMO

DISCUSSION What's everyone's honest opinion on Callie Torres? Spoiler

I love Callie, but I have a complicated relationship with her as a character. 😭

I love how deeply she loves her people and how hard she's willing to fight for them. When she cares about someone, she really shows up for them, and I think that's one of her best qualities.

However, her impulsivity and immaturity have frustrated me throughout her arc. I also didn't like how she sometimes seemed to expect Arizona to want children simply because that's what Callie wanted or because having kids was considered the standard. Wanting children is completely valid, but so is not wanting them, and I think that difference deserved more understanding from both sides.

And the custody battle? I hated what Callie did there. I understand that she was hurting and wanted to move forward with her life, but taking Sofia across the country would have had a huge impact on her daughter. Sofia wasn't just part of Callie's life; she had another parent, too. I don't think Callie's feelings justified making a decision that could disrupt Sofia's relationship with Arizona and Sofia's life overall.

Overall, I love Callie's character arc, but I feel like the custody battle damaged the way I viewed her. I still love her, but her impulsivity and immaturity are flaws I can't ignore.

What do you all think? Do you love Callie, dislike her, or fall somewhere in between? And what do you think about her actions during the custody battle?

I feel bad for Ava/Rebecca

I’ve seen a lot of videos and comments and posts and stuff about how much people hate Ava/Rebecca (I’m just going to call her Ava because I don’t wanna keep typing that long ass name over and over again lol) and like honestly I don’t get it. Why would anyone blame her for what she did? She was clearly mentally ill and it wasn’t her fault that she became mentally ill. She suffered an extremely traumatic event, physically and mentally, and it caused her to lose her memory. Alex was the first person who gave her any sort of “identity” because she literally didn’t even know her name or what she was supposed to look like before her face got destroyed, so of course she naturally fell in love with Alex, because he was the only person who “knew” her. The accident triggered her to become mentally ill (I think they said she had borderline personality disorder from what I remember) and that caused her to cling onto Alex in a really obsessive way. She trauma-bonded with him, didn’t want him to leave her, so she pretended like she was pregnant in order to prevent that. She didn’t know what she was doing, she was having a psychotic episode. I don’t understand why people talk so much shit and hate on her so much when what she did wasn’t even her own fault

probably my favorite canon lesbian relationship besides calzona, but it still sucks to remember the way they ended when their relationship was just beginning 💔

I cant stand jules and winston together, it's just another "attending x intern" trope and it's getting old

I wish they would bring back mika ☹️☹️☹️ I miss them together ☹️☹️☹️☹️

also quick question but do they have a ship name? does anyone know?

DISCUSSION Why the beach? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I don’t know if this has been discussed before, I know it’s old news, but it was what officially turned me off greys.

Why on earth, when Meredith was critically ill with covid in S17, did she see Derek and George…on a beach?

This absolutely drives me crazy.

Firstly, the beach was never a particularly important place to any of them. I would have forgiven the show, for instance, if they were on a ferry boat. Some place that held meaning to the characters and symbolism for a liminal space between life and death. But… a beach?

Secondly, we have precedent in S3.17 in Some Kind of Miracle that the afterlife limbo is depicted as the hospital/OR.

Likewise, when Izzie has her near death experience, she sees George in the elevator of the hospital.

These near death visions always centre on the hospital as that liminal space.

And would it not have been more impactful for covid infected Meredith to “wake up” feeling well in an empty hospital, wander the halls to the OR gallery and see… Derek operating on someone? Saying “it’s a beautiful day to save lives?”

Idk it just feels like such a missed opportunity and extremely lazy to set these massive episodes where both Derek and George featured after years of being off the show on a beach.

Am I the only one that feels this way?
