NEED HELP deciding the cage sizes for my birds
As a hobbyist, I have been keeping exotic fish for the past 18 years. Recently, I visited a relative who has a tame Green-cheeked Conure as a pet. After interacting with the bird, I also wanted to keep a tame bird as a pet.
I started looking for breeders and sellers and eventually booked a Yellow-sided Conure. Since it is still a baby, I plan to bring it home in a few days or weeks, once it starts eating independently to some extent.
I work from 9 AM to 6 PM, so I can hand-feed the bird, play with it, and give it attention in the morning and after returning home from work. While I am away, it will stay in its cage, and my mother will offer it soft food. Whenever I am home, I plan to let it out of its cage so it can explore and move around freely in my room.
I have purchased a cage measuring 2 ft (L) × 1.5 ft (W) × 1.5 ft (H) for the conure.
However, while browsing the internet, I came across Blue Opaline Lovebirds and instantly fell in love with their cute faces. Now, I am thinking about getting one as well, preferably a hand-tamed bird.
The space available for keeping the birds is approximately 2.5 ft in length and breadth. I am considering adding another cage measuring 1 ft (L) × 1.5 ft (W) × 1.5 ft (H), making the total setup around 3 ft long. I would keep the lovebird in the smaller cage.
Both birds would be kept individually in separate cages.
Initially, I considered keeping a pair of conures together in a single 3 ft cage for their entire lives, allowing them to bond and potentially breed. However, in India, conures are subject to CITES-related regulations, and I understand that I need to register them on the PARIVESH portal and obtain the necessary permissions for breeding, which can be expensive. Therefore, I decided against that plan and am now considering keeping one conure and one lovebird instead.
Here are my questions:
- Are the cage sizes I have mentioned suitable for a Yellow-sided Conure and a Blue Opaline Lovebird? I will provide them with appropriate toys, perches, and plenty of things to chew on,they both will be hand tamed.
- I will ensure that both birds receive a good diet and everything they need to stay healthy and happy.
- I cannot cancel the conure booking because the breeder has been raising the bird for me for quite some time.
- Both birds will have supervised out-of-cage time in my room, with plenty of perches, toys, and space to explore.
Considering my 9-to-6 work schedule and the space available, would keeping both birds individually be a good idea, or would it be better to stick to just the conure?
I would appreciate your honest suggestions and advice. Thank you!
