Featured Case #9 - "Justine"

On July 24, 2017, the victim attempted to break into a home in Atlanta, Georgia. They were soon caught by the homeowner, who proceeded to shoot them. While being rushed to the hospital, the victim uttered that their name was either “Justin” or “Justine.”

Due to the feminine clothing the victim was found wearing, it has been theorized that they may have been transgender, though this victim’s gender is unknown, and this is just speculation.

You can see a more detailed document on this case below:

If you have any potential matches we haven't seen, far-fetched or not, please suggest them in the comments.

Madera County John Doe (2020) Has Been Identified as Kent Cross!

Post image
763 Upvotes

On April 27, 2020, hikers discovered a human skull near the McLeod Flatt trailhead in Madera County, California. The skull was found on leaf-covered ground near Willow Creek at the bottom of a gorge, approximately 1.5 miles from the trailhead off USFS Road 5S07Z. The discovery site was north of Road 274 near Bass Lake.

The remains were determined to belong to a man estimated to be between 30 and 50 years old. Despite investigative efforts, his identity remained unknown for several years. Details of the case were entered into NamUs as UP159824.

In July 2026, Madera County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Specialist Daniella Romero submitted the remains to Othram in The Woodlands, Texas, for advanced DNA testing.

At Othram, scientists used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to develop a comprehensive single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) profile from the remains. Othram’s forensic genetic genealogy team used the profile to search for connections that could help investigators establish the man’s identity.

In October 2026, Othram returned investigative leads to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office. A follow-up investigation, including additional testing conducted by the California Department of Justice Bureau of Forensic Science, confirmed the man’s identity as Kent Cross.

Cross had been reported missing by his father in October 2016. Search efforts at the time did not locate him. His family has now been notified of his identification and shared that he frequently visited the McLeod Flatt area, which he considered his “happy place.”

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Madera County Sheriff’s Office at 559-675-7770. Anonymous tips may be submitted through Valley Crime Stoppers at 559-498-STOP (7867), or by texting “Tip MaderaSO” followed by a message to 888777.

somewhat of an update? + questions

Hey again! Last time I was here I posted about my potential match between San Francisco Jane Doe (2003) and Tammie Jo Chipman.

Sorry for taking so long to come back with anything, ive been super busy with college as of lately.

Still no word from the Doe Network after I reached out twice. I realize that the whole site/organization is going through some things (?) and a remodel, so I assume that's why.

That said, I have a question: has anyone ever submitted to somewhere other than the Doe Network, like an actual law enforcement agency? I'm wondering if that's something I should do or if I should just keep waiting. Idk how exactly to go about it, so any advice is appreciated

Also, today is October 28th, which is Tammie Jo Chipman's birthday. She'd be 65 years old. I wish Tammie a happy birthday, and I pray she is happy and at peace wherever she may be.

Could Multnomah County John Doe (1986, UP#8584) be Louis C. Lakin (MP#65312)?

Unidentified Person Case

Missing Person Case

Multnomah County John Doe (1986) | Unidentified Wiki | Fandom)

Louis Lakin was a WWI veteran who was last seen on January 6, 1928. He was a logger who had gone missing from Gresham, Oregon in Multnomah county. He was 37 at the time of his disappearance, and while his family looked all over for him, he was never found.

Multnomah County John Doe was found in 1986, and was estimated to have died from 1920-1955. He had died from suicide (gunshot to the head), and everything on his NamUs profile was a match to Louis. He was found in an extremely rural area that, at the time, was a logging camp. Because of the time that had passed, not much could be determined but everything that was available matched up with Louis.

Here's the post that inspired this, as I'm sure many of you guys had seen: He Died 30+ Years Before Being Discovered: Multnomah County John Doe (1986) : r/gratefuldoe

Honestly, circumstantial evidence makes me REALLY want to submit a tip here. He hasn't been ruled out, and if he's a veteran it'd be fantastic to be able to honor him properly. Thoughts?

White-handled two-blade pocket knife in the shape of a lady’s leg wearing a shoe, found in the inside vest pocket. Small piece of bootlace, found in left top vest pocket. Two boxes of Bryant and May matches, found in the hip pocket of trousers. Gray felt hat with black band, branded "Best selected fur, Australian made", found inside mineshaft. Two two-pound treacle tins, one containing fat and the other golden syrup, found inside the hat. Four-inch piece of candle. Pair of rimless spectacles in an aluminum spectacle case. Upper set of false teeth, found near the roadway. Envelope addressed to Mrs. Sherlock of Bondi, New South Wales, found near the entrance to the mineshaft. Pair of spectacles in a black spectacle case, found 15 yards northwest of mineshaft. Three billy cans, found 45 yards east of mineshaft. A small black frying pan without a handle, an enamel mug, a frame from a small purse, pieces of razor handles and two razor blades, the metal portion of a razor strop, burnt remnants of a woman’s dress, various buttons, dress fasteners and boot tingles, remnants of burnt hessian or coat lining, and an old boot brush were all recovered from the fire debris.

Circumstances of Discovery

On 5 January 1937, two men looking for gold decided to extend an old mine shaft that they had dug in 1932. The shaft was located about 30 yards from the Calder Highway. While excavating the dirt and debris that had accumulated over time, they discovered the skeletal remains of a man.

An examination of the remains showed that the man had been shot in the head. A search of the surrounding area inside the shaft revealed a bloodstained hat with a corresponding bullet hole. Inside the hat were a half-full treacle tin, a pair of spectacles, and a candle. Not far from the roadway, the remains of a dental plate were discovered, along with additional pieces found nearby. Approximately 30 yards away from the mineshaft, the remnants of a fire were also found. The ashes contained fragments of a woman's silk dress, two razors, and men's boots. Another pair of spectacles and a case were found about 20 yards from the shaft, as well as three billycans. An envelope with the address of Mrs Sherlock of Bondi, NSW, was found near the mine shaft.

Witnesses were interviewed and recalled seeing a man and a woman who passed through the area years prior. They recalled the man as being small and wiry, and having a noticeable cast to his eyes. They described him as being about 40 years old and 5'7" tall, with a thin build and brown hair and eyes. The witnesses also recalled that the man was wearing clothing and carried items similar to those found on and near the remains. In addition, the witnesses stated that the woman was quiet, had a thin build, and had dark features. They also noted that the woman was about 25-30 years old.

Despite an initial police investigation, a coroner's inquest held at Wedderburn on 21 September 1937 could not identify the deceased, although it established that the cause of death was homicide. Subsequent investigations in 1938 and 1941 could not reveal any additional information. As part of this investigation, almost 250 missing men were tracked down, but neither the identity of the man nor the woman was ever found.

Potential Match Possible match? Marlene Abigosis (Vancouver, 1984) and Harris County Jane Doe "Cassandra" (UP963, 1990)

Thumbnail
gallery
398 Upvotes

I spotted this while filling in one of the comparison notebooks I make for this kind of research. Lots of similarities, lots of discrepancies. Curious what you all think.

Similarities

  • Marlene worked the Vancouver docks and took boat trips with clients.
  • She loved a Norwegian sailor and waited for his ship to come in.
  • The Doe's shirt: "Marine Sport", a sailor, an anchor tattoo, a ship's wheel.
  • The Doe's pants were Cucamonga, a California brand.
  • Norwegian ships sailed Vancouver to San Francisco, and worked Houston's port in 1990.
  • Houston sits on I-10, a known trafficking route.
  • Similar eyes, brows, cheekbones and hair (her jaw was never found).
  • Never ruled out: she isn't on UP963's exclusions list.

Discrepancies

  • Age: Marlene would be 32, while the Doe is estimated 18 to 25.
  • Height: 5'6" vs about 5'0".
  • But Marlene wasn't reported missing until 2002, so her height was likely remembered by family, not measured.
  • Race: Indigenous vs White/Hispanic.
  • Six years between Marlene vanishing and the Doe's death.
  • HPD thinks the Doe was local, possibly named Cassandra.
  • Genealogy on the Doe is already underway.

Probably a long shot, but the sailor shirt won't leave me alone. Has anyone ever submitted Marlene for comparison?

Potential Match potential match?

i want to start this off by saying that even though ive been researching does for a while, i've only started trying to make possible matches for about a month now, and so far i'm not very good at it. but i posted this possible match on another app and i got positive feedback saying that i should submit this match. but i'd like to know what you guys think, as i've noticed you guys seem pretty knowledgeable. also, i don't use this app often and this is only my second post on this sub so i don't fully know how everything works.

with all of that being said, my possible match is andrea (2003) and esmerelda guadarma, missing from greenville south carolina on july 29, 2002.

why i think this could be a match:

both hispanic/latina

doe was 15-24, esmerelda was 15 when she went missing

greenville and cedartown are about 3 and a half hours away which i feel like isn't super far. obviously not close, but not super far either.

both 5'2

weight isn't super far off, and weight can fluctuate especially throughout a year.

why this might not be a match:

there's no photo of esmerelda, at least not on namus, so it's hard to compare their appearances.

doe had black hair, while esmerelda had brown hair.

esmerelda didn't go by andrea (although i think andrea could've just been an alias used by the doe)

Circumstances of Discovery

The decedent was struck by a vehicle on John T. Reid Parkway, adjacent to Western Sizzlin. He appeared to be hitchhiking and had no identification, identifying marks, or tattoos. A piece of paper with a phone number belonging to a man in Kentucky was found on the decedent. Upon speaking to the man it was discovered he had given the decedent a ride prior to the decedent's arrival to Scottsboro. The man was unable to give investigators further information other than he was possibly traveling to Florida.

His fingerprints were sent to the FBI in 1981, but investigators never received any reply from headquarters in Washington, D.C., and the FBI has no records of receiving them. He was later buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro on November 11.

In 2014, a Scottsboro newspaper ran a story on the man in hopes of identifying him. In August of that year, a local resident employed at Scottsboro Funeral Home saw the postmortem photograph and noticed that he looked similar to William Bradford Bishop Jr., a fugitive believed to have murdered his wife and children in Potomac, Maryland, on March 1, 1976, before dumping the bodies in Columbia, North Carolina. After the FBI was notified of the similarities between the two men, the body was exhumed for a DNA sample to compare with Bishop in October. Later that month, the FBI announced that the DNA samples did not match.

St. Paul John Doe (1991)-Fundraiser for Investigative Genetic Genealogy

For more than 30 years, a man known only as St. Paul John Doe has waited for someone to restore his name. He deserves to be identified, remembered, and returned to the people who may still be searching for him.

On August 27, 1991, his remains were found near a transient camp in Battle Creek Park in St. Paul, Minnesota.

In May 2024, Moxxy Forensic Investigations partnered with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify him through investigative genetic genealogy. This work could provide the answers that have been out of reach for decades, but it requires funding for DNA testing and genealogical research.

I’m an IGG intern with Moxxy, and my team is raising $4,385 to advance his case. Moxxy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and the funds raised are intended to help cover the case-related costs of DNA testing and investigative genetic genealogy needed to move the identification effort forward.

Please donate today, or share the fundraiser with someone who may be able to help:

https://givebutter.com/st-paul-ramsey-county-mn-john-doe-1991-f3eu6h

You can also support the case by purchasing “A Name for St. Paul” stickers:

https://moxxy.threadless.com/accessories/sticker

Every donation, sticker purchase, and share helps raise awareness of his case and brings him closer to identification. Please help us give St. Paul John Doe the name he has been waiting for.
