Collection / Shelfie / Haul Book Haul (Spring, Summer & Fall)
Buying books is fun! …now I need to buy more shelves.
Some of these I’d already read and wanted to own them, some I just took a flier on because they looked interesting. I still have some preorders and Kickstarters that haven’t arrived but I’ll put those in next year’s roundup.
Moderately interesting that the 3 landscape-oriented books all have orange coloring.

Recommendations/Requests Are any of the other Absolute books for me?
Just finished Vol 3 of absolute Batman and I’m loving it. I’m not a big superhero guy, especially the big guys like Batman but man I’m just have such a good time and don’t want it to end.
Seeing the other Absolute books, I’m intrigued but hesitant. I’ve NEVER been a Superman fan and anytime I try with the best of the best I just struggle. Never read anything Martian Manhunter related and same with WW.
Do any of these books hold a candle to Absolute Batman/would I enjoy any of them if I enjoyed Absolute Batman.?

Recommendations/Requests Animal Man Lemire or Morrison first?
Hi. I have just got the Grant Morrison Animal Man compendium and also the full New 52 Animal Man run by Jeff Lemire. Is there a recommendation for which should be read first? Or does it not matter? Thanks, so excited to delve into this character.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Jentry Chau is officially getting a graphic novel!!
galleryThis was announced at LightBox Expo. The first book is being written by series creator Echo Wu and illustrated by Kal Athannassov, with First Second publishing it.
They’re describing it as a retelling of the Jentry saga for a new medium, but they’ve also teased some things we haven’t seen Jentry face before. I’m really curious to see how much they expand or change from the animated series.
No release date yet, but I’m definitely interested in seeing how the show translates into a graphic novel.

Question/Discussion Something is Killing The Children Digital/Kindle Editions Question
This is in reference to Something Is Killing The Children.
Hello,
Ive noticed the omnibus file sizes account for the same as just one volume, while the 4 respective volumes are about 4x the file size of the omnibus.
Are the volumes a higher quality upload? Is this something I should I consider?
Just read vol1 on libby and really enjoyed it. Id like to buy them but im not sure which to buy & what rhe difference is (besides the omnibus vol1 holding Vol1-4; chapters 1-20). The file size has thrown me off.
Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Crime/Mystery Tintin in America by Herge
Just finished re-reading TINTIN IN AMERICA by Herge. I remember first discovering the Tintin comics as a teenager and checking the volumes out of the library so often my mom eventually got me the entire collection.
I loved how wonderfully written and illustrated they were, and how Tintin was this young investigative reporter who traveled the world getting into these increasingly dangerous situations and still somehow came out at the end.
From the comics to the 90s animated series to that animated movie that ended on an unrealized cliffhanger (I’m still hurt by that, but I digress), I became a huge fan of Tintin.
Tintin in America has him and his dog, Snowy, arriving in Chicago to report on the organized crime scene. Almost instantly, he steps right into danger when he’s kidnapped by a gangster posing as a taxi driver. And it gets wilder from there.
From confronting Al Capone to being gassed out in a small room and left for dead at the bottom of the ocean to chasing down a gang leader to an Indigenous community that’s literally called Redskin City (keep in mind this originally came out in the early 30s)…and that’s not even half of the craziness Tintin finds himself ensnared in.
How many times does Tintin come close to death in this story? I started to lose count after a while, but that’s what made the Tintin stories such an addictive read.
He was a smart, resourceful young man. Always underestimated. No matter the danger, he’d always find a way somehow and it was fun to see him figure it out. Some aspects of the stories have aged better than others, but they remain wonderful stories and hold up incredibly well. Rereading Tintin in America took me back to the first time I experienced those stories, and made me realize why I thought they were so cool in the first place.
For those who read Tintin in America (or any of the Tintin stories), what did you think?

Science Fiction / Fantasy “01321” - independent (out of print) mid 90s graphic novel by Koh Hong Teng
This has been on my shelf for more than 20 years. I picked it up randomly at a comic book store in Sacramento, CA (A-1 Comics, if anyone is curious) in either 2001 or 2002. At the time, this graphic novel wasn’t Google searchable but more has popped up over the years.
Titled “01321,” first printed in September 1996 in Singapore. It was self-published and credits four individuals: Koh Hong Teng, Tan Lun Cheak, Gillian Lim, and Chan Su Mei. The copyright page identifies Kin Yiap Press Pte Ltd, located in Singapore’s Toa Payoh Industrial Estate, as the printer.
Koh Hong Teng is the principal illustrator; he studied at Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently earned an honors degree in graphic design and illustration from the London College of Printing in 1994. Through some googling years later,
I found a 2011 interview that Koh collaborated with a friend and self-published 01321 in 1996. By the time of that interview, the book was already out of print.
The plot of the graphic novel (SPOILERS will follow) revolves around a character named Jama, a child music prodigy, who’s cut off in mid-audition by this higher power based “Music Council.” Jama refuses to believe the judges are right; his wounded pride turns to obsession as he builds an enormous mechanical instrument; he later learns (or realizes) that he shouldn’t compete with other musicians but become the thing audiences depend on. He should be the nourishment, which then dramatically evolves to a fantasy full of crucifixion and resurrection imagery. Jama will save humanity if humanity admits he’s great. With his new instrument/machine, Jama finally returns to the mentioned music council and is labeled as candidate 01321; they listen briefly, cut him off again, and call the next candidate (who’s labeled as 01322). This is a story of a man obsessed with being irreplaceable who’s then replaced almost instantly.
Anyway… has anyone else stumbled upon this?
The artwork is impressive but it is funny looking back on it: very late 90s, very “inspired by Dave McKean.” I know why this got my attention in the early 00s, I was definitely trying out this style of art via hand drawings and photoshop. I read this a couple times after obtaining it but I haven’t given it any attention until now. A nice little resurrection.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Ordered the omnibus from the library. This is a big ass book. 1,500 pages and like 10 lbs. Is it worth the effort?

Recommendations/Requests Graphic Novels that feel like Trench Crusade?
Hello all! Your recommendations helped me find some really great graphic novels last time so I've come back with a new request. This time I'm looking for things that feel like Trench Crusade. It doesn't necessarily have to be Christianity themed, so long as it fits the general vibe of Trench Crusade.
So think I guess some general keywords/themes would be grimdark, body horror, good vs evil, hell on earth, bleak, grimy, war, eternal conflict
Thanks in advance!

Collection / Shelfie / Haul Aeon Flux: (Look what I found ;)
So 1991 or 1992 is the earliest memory I have of Aeon flux -
I remember being captivated by these little short series of cartoons on MTV…
if memory serves me correct they were independent cartoons shown on those “Mike and Ike” festivals
fast forward to 1996 or 97. I forget what year I think I found this- either a borders or Dalton‘s book store
The structure of the story is basically surveillance notes or files being kept on the main character; in terms of keeping tabs on the opposing faction

Question/Discussion Copra
OK, it's time to convene the GN high council.
I stuck with it... Got to the end of Vol 7 because I kept reading review after review on Goodreads praising this series.
And I try to always be positive on this subreddit - I'm a comic ally!!
.... But what am I missing?! It was hard to follow and muddled at times... Deaths seem to happen and people just move on. Events happen that only explained issues later as to why it mattered. Can a fan of this series give me some insight into what they loved?
The exercise of it from Fiffe is admirable. Breaking the Kirby barrier. Finding new ways to challenge himself. But review after review mention Frank Miller and legendary Doom Patrol runs - which this is not. Help!!

Recommendations/Requests Recommendations for a manga reader who just discovered graphical novels?
Hi!
I feel absolutely over the moon and flabbergasted (and kinda embarassed for not knowing), as I just discovered that there is a huge graphical novels market outside the mangasphere.
I always loved reading but rarely managed to do it after a long day before I discovered manga. I love the combination of art and story and it feels so much easier for me to read, to the point where I look forward to starting instead of dreading starting a traditional book cus it’s kinda “harder” for me with the wall of text.
My taste:
- Mature, serious, and psychologically complex storytelling.
- Strong worldbuilding.
- Dark, melancholic, and philosophical themes.
- Morally ambiguous characters and strong character development.
- Layered mysteries, gradual revelations, and satisfying payoffs.
- Politics, history, ideology, religion, and power struggles.
- Trauma, identity, morality, and existential questions.
Some of my favourites are Attack on titan, Vinland saga, 20th century boys, pluto, goodnight punpun, solanin, monster, banana fish, no longer human.
Any recommendations will be very much appreciated! :-)
