Equipment New Driver, Less Distance?

Weird thing I have going on here. Used to just use an old Walter Hagen MS2 driver for about the last 10 months or so. Head ending up coming off and that was the end of that club. Recently invested in a Used TaylorMade R9 Supertri. My thing is I was consistently getting 240-260 with the old Walter Hagen with a flex shaft. The guy at the store said that I should try Extra stiff shaft so that’s what my new driver has on it. But with the new driver I’m barely cracking 200 consistently. I’ve played 3 rounds with the new one and I’ve had only 2 drives over 235. I’ve used impact stickers and found that im hitting it off the heel but even when it’s in the sweet spot it still won’t get the distance. So is this a potentially a club problem? Or a me problem?

It's a both problem. Why did he suggest a extra stiff? Did he check your speed?

this is why golfers shouldn't buy clubs without getting fitted. This is why golfers shouldn't ask for club recommendations on Reddit.

What's a great club for me doesn't mean it will be a great club for ALL other golfers. Are swings, ball flights and swing speeds are different.

extra stiff shaft is for swing speeds way above average, if you not swinging 110+ mph you just losing all the kick from the shaft and ball goes nowhere

I took a few pictures of some of my swings on the simulator and I was averaging about 99-103. So I assume it’s probably a substantial amount. I’ve got it to hit fairways better so if sacrificing 40 yards for center fairway a good trade? Or should I look for a different shaft to use the same club or just maybe a different club?

You might as well be hitting a 4 hybrid off the tee with that distance. The reason you hit more fairways with a 200 yard drive as opposed to a 240-260 is simple math. Smaller dispersion factor. You’ll want more distance out of your driver than that. You need the correct shaft to give you that extra kick off the tee so you can get that extra yardage.

It sounds like you need a stiff shaft with a different load point. Also can you confirm if each shaft is the same length?

What is your handicap? What is the dispersion of the new driver with the extra stiff shaft? My average swing speed with my driver is around 105, more like 95 at this point in the season after more than 100 rounds. I have a stiff shaft that is also quite heavy, and I’m struggling the last two weeks on the back 9. I’m assuming you are a new golfer and a high handicap by you not stating the weight difference of the shafts.

All shafts are not equal. One OEM’s extra stiff flex could be equal to another OEM’s stiff flex. The stiffness on the shaft only corresponds to the profile within that individual shaft line. That’s why it’s important to have a good fitting and be a bit discerning once you’re at a certain skill level.

My driver shaft plays way softer for a regular flex than the regular flex in my fairway woods/hybrids. They’re two different OEMs, but they fit the profile I’m looking for when it comes to each club type. I probably could go up in stiffness in my driver if I wanted to just get a bit more stability, but I don’t want to spend another $360.

Get fitted first. Shaft obviously is suited for your swing.
