Be careful....they're the most dangerous dogs...have you seen how many of their owners go blind?

I asked that sub once if farting helium would make a higher pitched fart. Years ago before the rules they have now and they didn't like that. I was legitimately curious.
108
u/adeadrat Jun 01 '19
What is the new rule?
Is it:
"Rule 11.6: Don't ask about helium farts, due to THAT incident"
25
u/cobaltmk33 Jun 01 '19
I think it doesn’t make a difference right? Because the sound comes from the dummy thicc ass cheeks clapping together?
2
u/JakeHodgson Jun 01 '19
Wtf happened to that sub? I swear I used to see it all the time. Now you go to it and apart from that top post they barely get any engagement.

u/adudeguyman Jun 01 '19
I have been wondering the same thing. I thought perhaps I got banned and something made it stop showing up in my feed.

They don’t call them Eyeball Eaters for nothing. Vicious monsters who love the taste of a squishy ocular ball.

My 5 month old sheltie jumped out the window last weekend. His privileges have been severely revoked after that little stunt.
191
u/veronica05250 Jun 01 '19
A friend's golden-doodle puppy did the same thing and broke her femur. Glad yours is ok!
252
u/Ghonaherpasiphilaids Jun 01 '19
Luckily we were stopped at a light. More luckily he was sitting on my wife's lap and she managed to grab his collar before he got totally out. He choked himself hangin for a second or two and then she hauled his dumb ass back in and he doesnt even look at the window now.
53
u/Raawnesh Jun 01 '19
Same thing happened when I first got my Rescue dog (pug beagle mix). Stopped at a red light with lots of cars around me and he proceeded to hop out of the window. Luckily he had his harness on with his leash attached and I was holding onto his leash.
About 9 cars watched me haul my pup back Mission Impossible style from the window

Cheap and easy to use, can clip into dogs harness (or collar, but harness for car rides is safer). No more puppers out the window, and can save your dog's life in a crash.
25
u/The_One_True_Ewok Jun 01 '19
Clipping it to collar seems like a good way to decapitate your pupper in an accident 😥
43
u/_Ryken Jun 01 '19
Yeah, that's why I mentioned the harness for car rides. There's actual harnesses designed for car rides, but a walking harness works in a pinch. All that being said, a seatbelt attached to collar is still safer than nothing at all.
10
u/swaarley Jun 01 '19
Here's a great harness for the car http://sleepypod.com/clickit-sport Keeps my pup safe and won't decapitate her if we get in an accident.
9
u/Rahnahnah Jun 01 '19
These may keep your dog attached to the seat but are not the best for a car. Please look into getting a crash-tested dog harness for your dog in the car. You wouldn't attach a seat-belt to a collar if your kids wore them.
3
Jun 01 '19
are there harnesses that let the dog wander a bit in the back seat? My dog goes from begging for food I'm eating, drinking out of her bowl and nose/ head out the window all the time, never mind when shes watching everything when I'm outside working.
3
u/howmanychickens Jun 01 '19
I have one of these for my Bruce, he keeps standing on the buckle and setting himself free.
But apart from that, they are very good.
2
u/Ghonaherpasiphilaids Jun 01 '19
Funny enough this happened on the way to a pet store to get him a lifejacket incase he did the same thing on a boat this summer. We ended up getting one of these as well.
1
u/andy3600 Jun 01 '19
Actually a legal requirement in the UK, not that many people pay much attention
11
u/PinstripeMonkey Jun 01 '19
I crack my window just enough for my dog's head to poke out. I've heard too many stories about dogs being injured by falling out of cars.
2
u/MsOmgNoWai Jun 01 '19
so.. I know this is a completely different animal but it happened last week. I live on the third floor. My large window was open but of course I have a window screen. One night, out of nowhere my cat jumped up and splayed herself on the screen until I freaked out, walked over and got her down. If that flimsy screen wasn’t there she would have went right out near traffic. I completely understand the uneasiness.
2
u/parmigiano-reggiano Jun 01 '19
Yep, my dog jumped out as soon as I slowed down enough haha His privileges were lost
2
u/CaptainCacheTV Jun 01 '19
That's one of my worst fears. When my husky was a pup and old enough to stand and see out the window in the back, I started putting the window down for him. One time he put his front paws up on the door and I yelled at him. He hasn't done it since, just sticks his head out. I'm so glad your wife was able to catch him in time. Even though you were stopped he could have bit hit by traffic.
1
Jun 01 '19
My dog did that one when seeing his best friend. Still gets to stick head out of window as he’s too cute to say no to.
1
u/janesvoth Jun 01 '19
My border collie jumped at the window repeatedly, unfortunately for him the window was up. He never learned
→ More replies (2)1
u/HellsMalice Jun 01 '19
That's probably one of my biggest fears. But luckily my dog is pretty small. I keep the window wide enough for him to stick his head out of but it'd take tremendous effort on his part to actually somehow get out of it.

Not just for puppies though Retrievers are awesome!

Jun 01 '19
All round they're my favourite breed. I've never actually owned one (even though I'd love to just buy a puppy right this second) but they're just adorable and I've never seen one that's been disobedient or difficult to manage.
38
u/onlyranchmefries Jun 01 '19
We had one when I was growing up. She was a very good dog but just very stubborn and she wouldn't stop eating socks??? Otherwise a very well behaved dog and almost never barked or jumped.
21
u/Adorable_Raccoon Jun 01 '19
Haha i used to walk a golden that was a total spaz. She wanted to be good but had zero impulse control. She would have ripped my arm off on walks if she could. And she stole all the socks, blankets etc and chew on them. I assume she grew out of that but she was WILD.
6
u/Anrikay Jun 01 '19
I've seen plenty that are bad. They're intelligent, love attention, and have incredibly high energy.
If they're getting enough positive attention, being mentally stimulated (lots of training sessions), and exercised often enough to not build up energy, they're easy to train, loyal, friendly, truly man's best friend.
But if they're not getting attention and are bored and restless, they'll adopt the "any attention is good attention" attitude. They'll jump on you or eat things to get your attention, run around the house potentially causing damage, and generally just misbehave.
With a young golden, you have to be prepared to spend at least a couple hours a day dedicated to your dog. Long, fast-paced walks and running them (basically sprint back and forth with your dog) a couple times a day with training sessions as well, and then lots of attention outside of that. If you can't give them that, you're going to have issues.

u/speedycat2014 Jun 01 '19
They are the "popular girl in high school" breed of dog. So much love and personality. I've had two. My first GR was a sweet, overly hyper girl, but so obedient. She never mellowed even when she got cancer. She was 100% Retriever, you could bean a tennis ball straight at her face and she'd catch it without flinching. Like the most badass athletic Golden with so much energy she couldn't sit still around kids.
My current girl is crafty and just... Willful, but so loving. She's a snuggler and just like her "Mom" (me) in that she'd prefer a nap over a run. She can't catch a tennis ball for shit, but you wanna chill and snuggle? She's got your back. She's 8 and I still don't trust her off leash like I could her sister, but she's a total love bug.
They are all so similar and yet so vastly different. They're an easy breed to love.

u/King-Koobs Jun 01 '19
I’ve grown up with two black labs over my 21 years here. Both were pretty much the same dog and both were extremely well behaved and beautiful looking dogs. Although, I personally think the Husky is probably the best looking dog
→ More replies (2)2
u/Cheesus250 Jun 01 '19
They can be very energetic and thus a little challenging to manage. They’re really smart and easy to train but this also means they get bored easily. They’re not as energetic as Border Collies and other herding dogs, but I wouldn’t call them easy to manage. My brother has one and it operates at a million miles a minute all the time. Great dogs, but if you’re looking for a very low-key temperament there are better breeds out there.
2
u/MaliciousHH Jun 01 '19
The are lovely but I don't think I could ever own one. The smell and fur shedding would be too much.

No. Save your precious moments. You will forget to remember them eventually. Go back and look at your collection of moments every few years and you'll have those memories fresh for a bit again.
I saved my first pup's and completely forgot about them until I started reading this thread.

We have always rescued older dogs but I it’s a revelation to me as well. Never realized puppies have baby teeth!

PSA hold on to your dog super tight when you do this. My puppy had his leash on and I was holding it tight when he jumped out the half opened window. He was almost a year at this point so he barely squeezed through the window. There was too much slack in the leash, enough to get his body weight out the window and then he fell out of the leash as I was trying to pull him back in. Luckily it was on my street. He busted up his face pretty good but he's ok. Dogs will jump out the window, don't presume they won't even if you're holding on to them.
57
u/Elivandersys Jun 01 '19
I have a friend who is a vet. Every summer she rages about the damage she has to fix (or the dogs she has to put down) because owners let their dogs do this, and the dogs jump out the window.
I was always really lax about it until she first talked about it in a Facebook post. I don't want to lose my doggos this way.
28
Jun 01 '19
Same here. I've never had a dog jump out the window before. He was way too close to being hit by my back tire. Now he only get the window cracked enough to stick his nose out
12
u/Morphumacks Jun 01 '19
Now he only gets the window cracked enough to stick his nose out
The best way, he gets all the smells with none of the danger
18
u/Hotsaltynutz Jun 01 '19
Ask them about damage to the dogs eyes due to small dust and dirt particles entering the dogs eyes at wind speed. I've heard is a big problem for dogs who are allowed to do this regularly. I have no idea if it's true or an urban myth

To add to the parent comment above, dog seatbelts/car harnesses are super cheap on amazon. They click right into belt buckles and you can latch them easily (preferably not onto dog collars, to protect their necks and breathing)
6
Jun 01 '19
Our pups are little escape artist pieces of shit so we pretty much assumed they'd try. We can only open the window a few inches and hold onto them or they'll squirm out (smallish breed). If we drive past the vet or their kennel we have to shut the windows and hold onto them tight... I can't believe people let their dogs sit next to a fully open window.
1
u/Dickiedoandthedonts Jun 01 '19
I also had a dog do this when I was a kid and I didn’t notice right away. I remember the slow motion horror of looking at his leash on my lap and my eyes following it as it lead out the window. He was dangling from his leash as we were driving. Luckily he was okay so it must not have been that long.
1
u/WriteSoberEditSober Jun 01 '19
Better PSA. Buy your dog a fucking seatbelt and don't hold them in your lap. I trust my own driving skills but I don't trust anyone elses and I'm not risking our dogs life. With the seat belts they can reach the window but never threw and will have a better chance of surviving an accident.
0
u/i_am_not_sam Jun 01 '19
We have a metal leash that locks to the seatbelt and is just the right length to let our puppy put his neck out

I see dogs with their heads out the window all of the time and I've always wondered how you train a dog not to jump out of a moving car
10
u/dogs_go_to_space Jun 01 '19
They should be strapped in, you can get body harnesses and seatbelt adapters. Putting their seatbelt on a collar is a great way to snap their neck in an accident.
Having an unrestrained dog is an offence here in England and rightfully so.

While this is cute.. Please keep in mind if you do this with your dog it can lead to health problems, especially if they are the type to bite at the wind. Any little bit of debris or kicked up stones can cause blindness due to the sensitivity of a dog's cornea, let alone the dogs who jump and end up with broken bones etc. Just some food for thought, if you wouldn't be okay with your child sticking their head out of the window at 100 KM/HR why isn't it the same for our canine companions?
