News SK Hynix says memory shortages to persist until 2030

Thumbnail theregister.com

“The company assessed that supply … is not keeping pace with the growth of the market,” SK Hynix told investors. “Given technical difficulty of leading-edge processes and the long lead time required to build new production facilities, it expects the structure in which demand exceeds supply to persist through 2030.”

It gets worse. SK Hynix has 14 long-term deals with 14 big buyers, who will collectively buy more than half of its output during 2027 and 2028, and some of them want to extend those agreements. The Korean giant doesn’t mind that because the deals include “a mechanism that reflects market conditions within a price range agreed upon with customers” and give it “a structure that secures stable profitability while allowing flexible responses to market changes.”

Release I built the most boring Windows app possible: it converts images and makes them fit a size limit. 4 MB of RAM. No ads. No upload

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Ever needed to upload a photo for a job application, visa, or some government form, only to get hit with "Maximum file size: 500 KB. JPG only"?

So you Google a converter, upload your photo (sometimes even your passport) to some random website, download the result, and find out it's still too large.

I got tired of doing this, so I built ImgConv.

It's a tiny, free, open-source Windows app that converts and compresses images without uploading anything anywhere.

Here's what it does:

  • Right-click an image in Explorer → Convert to JPG/PNG.
  • Set a maximum file size (like 500 KB), and it automatically finds the best quality that fits.
  • Supports PNG, JPG, HEIC, WebP, AVIF, and other common formats for input.
  • Preserves the original file and handles phone rotation.

The part I'm most happy with is how lightweight it is:

  • ~150 KB installer, ~70 KB executable.
  • ~4 MB RAM while idle.
  • No internet connection, telemetry, or background update checks.
  • No admin rights or additional runtime downloads required.

I also wanted something anyone could inspect. The entire app is about 800 lines of C#, released under MIT.

GitHub + download: https://github.com/kiranohaiiro/ImgConv

A couple of limitations: WebP/HEIC can be opened but not exported, and the installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning.

It's a small project, but it solves an annoyance I've had for years.

Would you actually use something like this, or is there something obvious I'm missing?

Open | Windows Someone remote connected to my computer and immediately went to microsoft Azure, what were they after?

As the title says, my computer got hacked. As soon as I found out, the computer has been isolated and wiped, that part has been taken care of already.

Last friday, someone from russia (got this from the firewall log) was able to connect to my computer despite having region blocking enabled. For some obscure reason, my computer had not automatically logged me out that day like it usually does after 5 mins of inactivity. Now, I happen to have a camera on the ceiling behind my desk which has full view of my monitors.

At 2AM sharp, I can see my cursor start to move and chrome open. They opened gmail (was already logged in) and scrolled thru my emails. I exclusively use my gmail for garbage and subscriptions, they found nothing but ads and newsletters. They then opened a second tab and opened the Microsoft Azure login page. They then tried to log in using my gmail address, unsuccessfully, as there is no Azure account tied to it. And that was it, they left my computer alone. This took place over the course of about 2 minutes. I don't even use Azure...

I had saved credit cards and a bunch of business files on this computer which they had seemingly no interest into... So now I am wondering what were they after? Azure is a cloud computing plateforme, as far as I am aware? What were they hoping to find? Thanks!

Release I missed Picasa Photo Viewer, so I built Licasa.

Anyone else still miss Google's Picasa photo viewer before google killed it?

I did, so I built Licasa, an open-source image viewer and editor for Linux inspired by that experience. It has just one base aim, show a preview of the image as soon as you click open.

What it does today:

  • Open photos straight from your file manager, fullscreen or in a floating window.
  • Handle modern image formats: HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL and JPEG 2000, alongside JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP. It also supports RAW previews.
  • Play Motion Photos and animated APNGs, so there's more to see than a still frame.
  • Crop, adjust and export when a photo needs a quick touch-up.
  • Stay ready for the next photo with an optional background mode for faster repeat opens. It's off by default.

It's free and open source under the BSD 2-Clause license.

Website: https://licasa.app

I'd love feedback from people who miss Picasa too, or just want a straightforward Linux photo viewer. if you try Licasa, I'd be interested in how it handles the photos and formats you actually use, especially opening times on your hardware. Bug reports and contributions are welcome.

Build Help 3060ti ——> 9070 GRE

• Upvotes

Like the title shows I’m curious if it’s worth upgrading to a 9070 GRE I refuse to pay close to $1000 for a High end GPU. My current set up is 5800x, 3060ti, and 32gb DDR4. I found a 9070 GRE for msrp at my local microcenter and I know it’s impossible to get anything close to msrp with the current market. Advice?

I very much so dislike meta and don’t want it having access to my stuff but I can find the file to get it to stop asking me for stuff. Please help me!

Open | Hardware PC passes every stress test but completely freezes when gaming, even after clean Windows install. I’m out of ideas.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been troubleshooting an issue with my PC for weeks now and I’m genuinely running out of ideas. I’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of, and I’m hoping someone here might have experienced something similar.

PC Specifications

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F
RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) Kingston FURY Renegade DDR4 3600MHz CL16
PSU: ADX 750W
SSD: Lexar THOR PRO 1TB NVMe
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO
OS: Windows 11 Home
The Problem
My PC works completely fine when doing normal tasks like browsing, watching videos, using Windows, etc.
However, when I launch games (particularly Counter-Strike 2, but I’ve experienced issues with Valorant and Delta Force as well), my PC will randomly freeze completely.
Sometimes it happens shortly after launching a game, other times I can play for a little while before it happens.
When it freezes:
The entire screen becomes completely unresponsive.
Sometimes game audio continues playing in the background despite the screen being frozen.
Other times everything locks up completely.
After a while, the screen goes black.
Eventually, the computer restarts or ends up in the ASUS BIOS.
Most recently, I launched CS2 immediately after a completely fresh Windows installation. The game froze, remained frozen for approximately two minutes, the screen went black, and after another couple of minutes the PC booted directly into the ASUS BIOS settings.

What I’ve Already Tried

Completely wiped the PC and performed a fresh Windows 11 installation.
Installed only Steam, CS2 and Google Chrome after reinstalling Windows.
Issue happened immediately again on the fresh installation.
Ran multiple CPU, GPU and system stress tests, which passed without reproducing the crashes.
Investigated Windows Event Viewer extensively.
Previously encountered volmgr Event ID 161.
Attempted to analyse crash dumps using multiple tools, but couldn’t obtain a conclusive cause.
Changed RAM BIOS settings from DOCP/3600MHz to Auto.
Physically reseated/moved the graphics card.
Tried troubleshooting RAM configurations previously.
Investigated possible anti-cheat conflicts, but the issue persists without FACEIT or other separately installed anti-cheat software.
I have not manually installed an NVIDIA GPU driver following the latest Windows reinstall, although Windows may have automatically installed one.

What’s Confusing Me

The PC can pass demanding stress tests, including tests that put the CPU and GPU under significant load, without any issues.
But as soon as I try gaming, the system becomes unstable.
I would have expected a faulty GPU, CPU, RAM or PSU to show some problems during stress testing, but nothing has consistently identified the problem.
The fact that the issue remains after a completely clean Windows installation makes me think it could be hardware-related.
What I’m Looking For
Has anyone experienced similar symptoms where a PC passes stress tests but freezes completely during gaming?
Could this be caused by a faulty GPU, PSU, motherboard, RAM or even the SSD?
I’m willing to test or replace components if necessary, but I really don’t want to spend money randomly replacing parts without knowing what’s causing the issue.
Any advice on how to isolate the faulty component would be massively appreciated.
Thanks!

and im using the smaller jack cuz thats the one that fits.

After doing an update the thing'll register and appear but no sound will play! Here's what I've done/checked:

Adjusted volume on computer and IRL on its volume knob.

Went into device manager and disabled it then restarted then enabled then restarted

Went into device manager and uninstalled the headset option then restarted so it'd redownload itself

Tried the useless troubleshooting thing in the settings.

Fiddled with ''audio enhancement''(something along those lines) in settings

Fiddled with audio tests in device manager(or something similar) and did the same with all hertz in settings.

Headset definetly works since it works on my laptop and i switched the headset which gave me the same result.

dumbass microsoft uploading their bloatware resource hog microsoft teams and using 70% AI for their coding or some shit, would really appreciate some help with ts thanks.

Open | Malware GRUB compromised?

• Upvotes

https://i.postimg.cc/wBp7gHwb/grub.jpg

Hello everyone.

been downloading some sketchy things lately (yeah i know) this setup is used for videogames and random stuff and nothing personal like banking or documents. I'm very attentive on system perfomance so i'm always confident i can catch stuff. The system been acting a bit trash lately so I decided to wipe and reinstall. I have a safe usb used just for installs with a w11 iso and ventoy on it. Plugged it, got to ventoy menu and had to grab something. I came back to the pc and this is what happened. GRUB command line(? i have no idea on how grub works honestly) with random characters. Tried restarting, waited again and saw the command line open, write "ps-NicoPiai" automatically and then an error popping up. I didn't grab a photo of it because i got spooked and shutdown my pc. I have no idea what is happening and in my head the only possibility is that grub got infected (is it even possible from a normal windows install??).

I tried restarting several times and i'm getting the same result now with these random characters (yes, i tried to disconnect all peripherals so i exclude it's a malfunction)

I need serious help on understanding what is happening and if someone can guide me to find the root of these commands happening

Open | BSOD Going insane

• Upvotes

So for the past 2 weeks my PC been crashing just randomly, it could crash after 4h or not crash for an entire day, it freezes completely and last time it went into a boot cycle and i had to manually turn it off.

Here is a complete and organized summary of all the critical errors, system failures, and evidence we have recorded on your computer so far:

  1. Blue Screens and Critical System Failures

* WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (Code 0x124)

* Details: Repeated logs (including the last dump WHEA-20261027-1338.dmp). Involves the processor driver (GenuineIntel.sys) and the system process (smss.exe).

* Meaning: The processor detected an unrecoverable hardware failure on the communication bus while attempting to read or boot system components.

* UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (Code 0x7f)

* Details: Occurred during the execution of a game (GTA V), throwing a double fault exception.

* Meaning: A stack overflow occurred due to a critical failure while attempting to access virtual memory.

* Memory Manager Access Violation (Code 0x0A)

* Details: Identifier AV_nt!MiSetVaAgeList.

* Meaning: The Windows kernel crashed because it could not properly read or manage virtual memory pages due to data corruption.

* Crashes without Blue Screen (Freezes and Restarts)

* Details: The screen freezes completely (even while performing light tasks like opening Chrome or while idle) because the SSD becomes unresponsive, forcing an automatic restart after a few seconds.

  1. System Boot and Repair Failures

* Automatic Repair Failure (SrtTrail.txt)

* Details: After a boot error, Windows attempted to repair itself automatically but failed, leaving the PC stuck in the recovery area.

* Meaning: The tool could not read the operating system files because the storage drive failed at a critical read point.

* * Freezing on the Manufacturer's Logo

* Details: Upon restarting, the PC gets stuck on the initial motherboard logo.

* Meaning: The BIOS is unable to communicate with the SSD to detect the boot sector.

  1. Hardware Diagnostics (Exclusions and Culprit)

* RAM: Verified using the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool (mdsched.exe) and tested with PowerShell commands. Result: 0 errors. The physical RAM is in perfect condition.

* Processor (CPU): Although the WHEA (0x124) and GenuineIntel.sys errors point to the processor, it was confirmed that it is not damaged, but rather acts as the "messenger" that detects and alerts the system to the massive communication failure originating from the storage.

* The Ultimate Culprit — System SSD (ADATA SX6000PNP 256 GB):

* Overall health reduced to 71%.

* 123 data integrity errors (0E), confirming that the physical cells are failing to read/write.

* 82 internal bus error entries (0F).

* 166 unsafe shutdowns (0D) caused by the same screen freezes and crashes.

This is what gemini said, again ive been asking it just trying to get somewhere i guess, but i just idk anymore i need people that actually know to tell me what could be the cause, crystaldisk says the disc is good but at 71% and i just don't wanna spend money on a new SSD that ends up not being the culprit, cuz i gotta send the PC to a different city, mainly cuz theres basically no people here that do this (and i don't trust myself doing it either.)

Open | Windows Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G9 IRL keyboard stops working when a USB-C cable is connected during startup

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange keyboard issue with my Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G9 IRL (Windows 11) and I'm hoping someone has experienced something similar.

The problem:
If I start my laptop with a USB-C cable connected, my built-in keyboard does not work at the Windows login screen or after logging in.

This happens with the USB-C charger, but also when I connect something like my iPhone using a USB-C cable.

If I start the laptop without anything connected to the USB-C port, the keyboard sometimes works normally, but the issue can still occur occasionally.
Disabling Windows Fast Startup did not solve the problem.

What I've tried so far:
Disabled Fast Startup.
Installed the chipset driver.

Checked Device Manager. Both the HID Keyboard Device and Standard PS/2 Keyboard report that they are working properly.

Tested the keyboard in BIOS, where it always works.
Restarting normally sometimes causes the keyboard to stop working again.

The issue seems to be related to Windows startup or possibly something involving USB-C, but I can't figure out what is causing it.

All help welcome :)

Build Help I'm planning to build a new PC, and the question arose about choosing nvidia and amd

Hi everyone! I'm kinda new here. My pc is slowly dying, and my 1060 not handle any new games good :(
Which is why I started thinking about almost completely replacing the components in the near(i hope) future. I've decided on the memory and processor.
First guestion about cpu. I'm looking on r7 7800x3d. Is Gigabyte B650 UD AX good enough for this? I'm not planning on boosting memory, card or processor.
And second, main question about gpu. Long enough i planning to get rtx 5070, but due to ai problems in the world, and cuz my country is shittiest place in the world in last times, i've read a lot about the fact that it's not the most reasonable option to take a card from Nvidia right now, but it's better to take one from Amd. So i started to thinking about 9700xt. In my country it doesn't cost much more, but it has 16 GB of VRAM. I'm not really interested in dlss5 things and path tracing, but framegen might interest me cuz i heard that on last rtx cards it extremely imperceptible. So I can't figure out who I want to take the card from in the end.
In general, are there any obvious problems with amd cards? Or i can safely consider this option at the future? I'm considering on this card "PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Reaper", is it good?
Thanks for answers ^^
