Subreddit Rules

/r/ForeignMovies is under new moderation.

The sidebar has been reworked and tidied up, dead links have been removed and lots of new links added. [note: the sidebar currently works better under old reddit than under new reddit]
A large number of film-related links that have no immediate connection to the topic of this subreddit have been moved to the new WIKI-list.

There will be some changes to the way this subreddit is being moderated, but not really. By that I mean that these are all things that are already part and parcel of this subreddit, but that will be more strictly enforced in the not-too-distant future:

  • No links to illegal streaming/download sites, and no links to pirated copies of films on video platforms like Youtube. [I know that a vast number of international films are hard to find legally, but anyone recommending a film should realise that people reading the recommendation and caring enough about the film can actually look for it on their own. If people are too lazy to do so, they have probably not been interested enough in the first place.] If a film happens to be in the public domain that’s fine, but your post needs to contain an openly accessible, reliable source that confirms that the film is in the public domain.

  • No English-language films. [Please take a look at the separate entry I made regarding justifiable exceptions to that rule.]

  • Naturally, pornography is banned.

  • Please keep an eye on the quality of the content. While there is absolutley no need to keep this subreddit strictly arthouse, and while many genres are worthy of discussion, you should consider that maybe not every foreign sea-monster B-movie from the 1960s is worth talking about here. There are special subreddits for that sort of thing.

About Reddit's filters... - the sequel

Once again, I need to repeat what I wrote a year or so ago:

"Reddit seems to have become more aggressive in recent weeks when it comes to automatically deleting posts/comments."

Often, I cannot even remotely see the reason why this happens. So if anyone is missing one of their posts or comments, please drop me a line. If I can find the time, I'll go on a hunt and try to find it.

Also what do you guys think of my European film festival quest idea? I want to see more European movies as I feel most of the movies I’ve seen have been either American or Japanese. I think this idea should be a pretty good way to slooowwwwly work my way through modern film history over the course of several years.

La Bola Negra might be one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen and possibly the greatest gay film of all time!! Don’t quote me but possible nominations for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Song. Possibly even best cinematography and best film. Absolutely phenomenal!

Does anyone know where I can find good English subtitles for Resurrection (Kuang ye shi dai, 2025), directed by Bi Gan? Every subtitle file I’ve found so far seems to cut out parts of the film. I’m looking for a complete, accurate version that doesn’t skip any scenes or dialogue. Any help would be g

Did anyone see Once Upon a Time in the Middle East?

was a bit unrealistically serendipitous at a few points, it has an incredible amount of detail, rich worldbuilding, excellent acting and offers a fascinating look at the Chinese perspective on American militarism. Food serves as a handy stand-in not only for community building but also nation building and economic development.

I also appreciated subtle character details that humanized people on all sides of the conflict. Apparently the star, Shen Teng, is a big comedic actor which makes his restrained, dramatic performance all the more impressive. I couldn’t help but think that his hero’s journey was reminiscent of the Odyssey, filled with detours and monsters to outwit before finally making it home years later.

Again, my main critique is relates to the story. While the chef character was apparently a composite of actual Chinese restauranteurs who stayed in Iraq after the US invasion, the scenes of him saving orphans and rescuing child soldiers seemed a bit too on-the-nose and over the top. As far as I know, nothing like this ever happened in the Iraqi context, so these plot points make an otherwise nuanced movie feel a bit propagandistic. There was also a child labor aspect that seemed a bit…questionably casual?

Overall though, I’d give it a 4.5/5, definitely worth a watch. It felt well-researched and well-shot, you could almost call it an epic tragedy.

Curious to hear if anyone else had the chance to catch it.
