New Rule : Please use the Search function before posting.

As this subreddit has grown over the past years, our regulars have noticed that similar questions get asked over and over again by people interested in the amazing variety of food available in the GTA. Today we're rolling out a new rule to try to reduce the number of repetitive posts that we've been seeing too often.

We're simply asking that posters use the subreddit search to see if their question may already be answered before they post asking for recommendations and reference their research if its not. We also ask that they include specificity like location, cuisine, etc in their request as the GTA is a huge area.

We wanted to announce this change widely so everyone is aware, and hopefully this will be a positive change for the subreddit. We're interested in feedback if you feel the rule has room for improvement.

I Ate A Thing Croissants @ Aux Merveilleux de Fred and Nord Lyon

Hopped by at MEC and decided to try the croissants from two nearest bakeries on a whim for lunch at work.

Pic 1: Aux Merveilleux de Fred

Pic 2: Nord Lyon

Pic 3: Pan Au Chocolat from Aux Merveilleux de Fred and 'forgot what its called chocolate puff pastry' from Nord.

Total from Aux was $10 and from Nord was $12.

The croissants from Nord were massive with a fluffier texture, though the Aux one was more buttery in comparison. Pan au chocolat was excellent, perfect selection of the 60-70% dark chocolate nestled in the perfect buttery crumb.

Hi! Can I find apple cider donuts somewhere in Toronto? I've looked it up online but no luck... Is this only available at orchards and farmer's markets?

Help a Fall lover out, please! I always hear about these donuts and never tried one. TIA!

Looking for a place that sells farm raised salmon for raw consumption. We used to purchase from Seamax in Richmond Hill, but Google says it's closed permanently.

I want a sausage and bacon breakfast sandwich that's saucey and gooey. My favourite in my area is Sleepy Pete's. I love Masa Deli as well but looking for any other recommendations.

Pizza in Toronto is so much better than pizza in Boston

Kinda random topic. I was very excited to try some top pizza places while in Boston, I tried 3 places that are supposed to be some of the best but I was disappointed. I’ve had much better pizza in Toronto! I love Toronto, can’t wait to come home. (Here for work)

Had Ernesto’s, Regina’s, Florina.

I Ate A Thing Sunday Roast at Fox on John

Was in town for a concert and stopped by Fox on John for dinner. Saw they had a Sunday roast so gave it a try. Was actually my first time trying a Sunday roast, need to try one from the UK though.

Here is what it consists of:

Slow Roasted Rib Eye + Garlic Cheesy Mashed Potatoes + Green Peas + Yorkshire Pudding + Gravy + Horseradish Cream

Overall it was a good portion size (I’d consider it a snack but did leave full), the rib eye was not bad for what it cost, and I really enjoyed the mashed potato and the gravy. Vibe was nice and staff was friendly.

Only thing that blew my mind was the pre set tip buttons on the debit machine. By default it was 25%, 23%, 20%. I’ve never seen tip percentages this high before and I dine out a lot so this was a first. I still tipped 20% but still mindblown

Not too bad for a pre concert dinner. Would I get it again? Probably not. There’s more better options around the area.

Also got a pitcher of sangria and a dip to share

I Ate A Thing Casa Tabasco, near the Junction

Found this absolute gem of a Mexican restaurant while we were visiting the Humber River. Ordered a bunch of different items and they were all delicious. Clockwise from the top:

- Beef barbacoa quesadillas

- Cochinita tacos

- Chicharron tacos

- Chicken panucho

My personal favorite was the cochinita, but the chicharron was also very special and nothing like I've tried before. Their hours are a bit limited unfortunately, but if you're in the area this is a solid choice for delicious Mexican food.

Address: 3425 Dundas St W, York, ON M6S 2S4

My go-to restaurants for seasonal dishes have been Union, Enoteca Sociale, and Viaggio for several years.

Which other restaurants with seasonal menus do you like?

Wife’s 30th birthday! Restaurant suggestions for a newly married couple.

Hi fam! My wife’s 30th birthday is coming up in two weeks and I wanted to take her out for a great evening. She’s a vegetarian and I’m not. So some of my favorite French and Portuguese restaurants are a no-go for her. We both also like eating healthy which usually leaves us with less options to explore.

Some of our favorite eating experiences have been Mamaka’s, Gia, Maha’s Kitchen, Hem’s Social, Thai Nyyom, Rasa and Botham’s. We also enjoy Indian cuisine however Toronto has been a let down in comparison with all the creative fusion Indian food we ate while growing up in London.

Would love your recommendations! How would you plan an evening?

Cobs Garlic Cheddar Sourdough?

I tried this years ago and it made some seriously delicious grilled cheese. I just learned it's available again but only at select locations. Looks like my local (leaside) is not one of them :(

So I call on my fellow torontonians: have you seen the vienna loaf at your local cobs recently? If so, please do share 🙏

Thank you for recommending Bricolage Bakery!

I went to Bricolage this Saturday for the first time, and it was SO AMAZING that I went back again the very next day. Thank you so much to everyone on Reddit who has recommended them.

Bricolage was by far the best bakery experience I've had in Toronto. (Here are some others I have tried: Barbershop, Emmer, Blackbird, Brodflour, Bakerbots, Gerrard St. Bakery, Rahier, Bonjour Brioche, Harbord Bakery, Daniel et Daniel.)

Here is what I ate, and what I thought of it:

* Almond croissant: I am not normally a huge fan of almond croissant but this was spectacular. Crisp pastry, lots of almond filling, unbelievable textural contrast. I would happily eat this every day forever.

* Blueberry danish: Lovely. Perfect pastry, just enough custard, a million blueberries.

* Pistachio croissant: Excellent. Not quite as generous with the filling as the almond croissant, but still fantastic. The pistachios were super fresh and full of flavour.

* Potato bacon épi: Mashed potato and bacon. This was the first item where I could taste bread, and the bread was delicious.

* Bagel with onion cream cheese: Very large, thin bagel with lots of sweet onion cream cheese. Simple, delicious.

* Cheese jalapeño bacon bun: My least favourite, only because there was nothing particularly surprising or special about it. But it was still GREAT and I would happily eat it again.

* Curry bun: I am a huge fan of all handheld stuff-encased-in-pastry foods and so this was exactly up my alley. It was perfect. Japanese curry inside a light, crisp bun with just enough structural integrity to eat neatly. An absolutely perfect snack.

I sometimes don't love viennoiserie because it can be dry - and if it's not dry, sometimes it's kind of heavy and stodgy. Like, I think croissants are gorgeous but sometimes I don't really enjoy eating them. This was not like that. Every single individual item had its own perfect counterplay of brittle-versus-creamy; not a single thing was stodgy or heavy or soggy or dry.

If you recommended Bricolage here, THANK YOU.

These are my new favourite Hot Dog.

Post image
81 Upvotes

If you live near a Bruno’s please do yourself a favour and grab a pack. These were from their Queen East store. I have been looking for a go-to dog for a while and haven’t been happy with almost any store bought ones. The Farm Boy house ones are quite good and the Schneider Cheddar Jalapeño ones are great but just a different thing that I still need a regular go-to dog.

These are absolutely my new favourite. I’d compare them favourably to Costco hot dogs.

These are a great size too, Martin’s Potato Roll for scale. I still have to try some of the house ones from some local butchers but I think I’ve had every available one in major grocery stores. These are in another tier of their own.

Would love to hear your recommendations for any of the above that have good Monday lunch options! No real concern over price or location. Open to other options for Monday lunch as well, but lean towards one of those.

Where can I buy the original J.Kwinter hot dog?

I bought the king Sam and they tasted NOTHING like my childhood. So lame. They were gross. Now I see they've taken Kwinters totally off of their package so must have been doing something shady. Anyway I heard the real J. Kwinter are back has anyone found them in the GTA or north of the city? Alliston?
