Have you guys heard of Hanggai?
They are a folk rock band mixing rock and traditional Mongolian music, popular in the 2010s.
I was looking through my old videos the other day and found a live solo performance by Batubagen, their morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) player and khoomei overtone singer (a form of throat singing).
This was in 2023. At that time, he had already moved to Pasadena and quit the band.
I saw him at a Naadam in my area and he was so amazing. He performed Морин цэргийн магтаал (Ode to the Cavalry), Huhe Namjila (from their Baifang album), and a morin khuur tatlaga, I think Жонон харын явдал (The Gait of Jonon Khar).
I'm so glad I whipped out my phone at that time. Listening to the recording again really brought back those memories. Just pure unadulterated live vocals and his morin khuur playing and nothing else.
I felt bad for the guy because he came to the event from another country, stood around outside and waited for the entire day, and then went up on stage and performed for 7 or 8 minutes while the audience talked over him. And people paid more attention to Da Shan reciting some poem and hamming it up for the audience. (I hope he at least got paid...)
I've never seen anything about Batubagen doing folk music or solo performances, so I doubt I will get this experience again. It was a magical moment for me, just wanted to share.

Looking for a song
I'm looking for a sort of folkpunk adjacent song.
I distinctly remember the lyrics "and they won't be singing my song in the morning time"
talkas about leaving town and having a half ounce of smack.
does anyone have any idea?

"Red Wing" – Solo acoustic mandolin (100% unamplified)
Hey everyone,
Here is a dry, unamplified take on the classic fiddle tune "Red Wing", played completely solo on mandolin.
No pickups, no DI, no compression or studio tricks—just the instrument in the room and straight flatpicking to keep the melody and pulse moving together without a rhythm section.

There Were Roses
Another moment from The Woods Tea Company at the Vergennes Opera House: “There Were Roses.”
A moving song of friendship, loss, and our shared humanity. We’re glad to share this performance from the concert archives and hope you’ll take a few minutes to listen.
If this song holds a special memory for you, we’d love to hear it in the comments.

Jim Croce: "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels" (1972)
[Cash Box](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CashBox) described the lyrics saying that "in [James Taylor](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Taylor) fashion, Croce tries to track down his long lost lover with the help of the operator."[[3]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operator(That's_Not_the_Way_It_Feels)#cite_note-3)
The song relates one side of a conversation with a [telephone operator](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operator_assistance). The narrator is trying to find the phone number of his former lover, who has moved to Los Angeles with his former best friend. The narrator wants to demonstrate to both of them that he is well and over their betrayal, but admits to the operator that he is not. After the operator has given the narrator the number, he is unable to read it, apparently due to the tears in his eyes. The narrator then changes his mind and tells the operator not to place the call, appreciatively adding "you can keep the [dime](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dime_(United_States_coin))" (the then-standard toll he had deposited in a [payphone](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payphone)).
The story was inspired during Croce's military service, during which time he saw lines of soldiers waiting to use the outdoor phone on base, many of them calling their wives or girlfriends to see if their [Dear John letter](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DearJohn_letter)was true.[[4]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operator(That's_Not_the_Way_It_Feels)#cite_note-4)
[Record World](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RecordWorld) called the song a "strong story-telling tune in the [Chuck Berry](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Berry) '[Memphis](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis,Tennessee(song))' vein" and said that "the single is a near-perfect matching of this singer to the song."[[5]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operator(That's_Not_the_Way_It_Feels)#cite_note-rw-5)
