Anyone else seriously struggling with exercising through early pregnancy symptoms? - nausea/exhaustion/back pain

• Upvotes

I'll be 12 weeks pregnant tomorrow and my symptoms have totally prevented me from exercising.

Background; I've always been fit, been a fairly serious cycIist, then in the last year I've been more focussed on weight training.

I was on holiday when I found out and was 4/5 weeks at that point not doing much in the way of intentional workous but super active hiking and swimming. A few days after taking a positive test the symptoms set in, intense nausea and exhaustion which put me out for weeks. The most movement I managed in that time was a small amount of mobility work and 30 minute walks from time to time, absolutely nothing regular.

Now at 11 weeks pregnant my nausea and exhaustion symptoms are just starting to ease, but I put my back out doing the simplest task at the weekend. When I thought it was better, I pushed it too far and have sent it into another spasm.

I have a meeting with my PT on Friday which was supposed to be my first session back after 2 months off but I've had to change it to a coffee meet up as I'm not ready to dive back in yet.

Anyone else been in this situation and either come back fighting fit in the 2nd trimester, or do I just need to adjust my expectations?

Any suggestions of appropriate exercise? I'd love to get back to lifting but is it even going to happen for me?

NHS recommends swimming but my local pool isn't up to much.

I do have a turbo trainer for my bike so that could be an option?

Approaching 8 weeks hoping the momentum is coming back.

Im almost 8 weeks. Ive stacked on a fair bit of weight despite not drinking alcohol which i always blamed for my extra weight and nausea /food aversions. I have mainly been skipping the gym (which im sure will have lead to muscle loss) and shoving in whatever beige food appeals to me. I do not do well entering into this sort of habit mainly for my mental health and I absolutely cannot check out of fitness for the entirety of this pregnancy. My irrational fears of excersise harming the baby are waning and my mood seems to be improving. So today I've bought a walking pad and when kids are back at school im going to restart one of my lovely fitgirlmel gym programs.

I don't know the point of this post besides to say I am hoping I am coming slowly out of the rut of the past 4 weeks. I know its early days but they have absolutelt floored me.

Pelvic Girdle Pain-NO relief

• Upvotes

Has anyone ever experienced PGP and you tried different things to ease the pain but nothing worked? I’ve tried the hip band, stretching, and doing exercises but I’m in PAIN. I’m asking because I want to see if no relief is a possibility or if I’m just not doing enough.

Anyone comeback from injuries between pregnancies?

We plan to TTC in The spring, we’re delaying it because I had a major series of unfortunate event injuries this summer: Achilles sprain, pulled adductor, strained neck muscle and my core is still a work in progress from baby #1 two years ago. I started PT last May and had one PT make an injury worse which indirectly led me to this domino effect.

I’m feeling super defeated because we intended to run for #2 in August and all this happened in June/July. I just turned 36.

Share your positive recovery stories with me. Hoping to feel in a better place in 5-6 months from now.

What's been the hardest part about exercising during pregnancy?

For those of you trying to stay active during pregnancy, I'm curious what the biggest challenge has been.

Is it knowing which exercises are safe, finding the energy, staying consistent, dealing with changes in your body, or something else entirely?

I feel like people talk a lot about the benefits of staying active, but not always about how hard it can be to actually make it happen.

What's been the most frustrating part for you?

anyone else struggling to figure out what exercise is actually safe during pregnancy?

I feel like there's so much conflicting advice out there about exercising while pregnant.

One person says you can keep doing your normal workouts, someone else says you should avoid certain movements completely, and then you go online and find 10 different opinions lol

And even when you want to stay active, some days you're just exhausted or nauseous and the idea of working out feels impossible.

I’m curious how other pregnant women are dealing with this.

Do you feel pretty confident about what exercises are safe for you, or is it something you still find confusing? And what’s been the hardest part about staying active during pregnancy?

6 w pp pelvic floor doesn’t feel quite right when jumping

I’m 6 w pp with my second and I tried to do some simple butt kicks warming up yesterday and even that bit of bouncing felt like something was falling or poking out of my vagina. I don’t experience that feeling at any other time- I’m walking 8-10K steps a day and lifting but haven’t done any jumping or running.

Could this be prolapse?? Or just my pelvic floor not ready for jumping?

I thought I had done a good job with pelvic floor work throughout pregnancy and postpartum but maybe not enough? I also just had my 6w appt and my OB did a pelvic exam and said all looked good.

Missing my gym community a bit

9 weeks 3 days, and I have been able to be pretty consistent with my workouts. I had a couple weeks where I was on pelvic rest due to a SCH. But I was able to continue with my walks. I still am working out, but definitely feeling depleted quickly. I know I am creating a human so my energy is down so my workouts are not as intense as before. But two things that have be down a bit, I have skipped my spin classes, and I am feeling like I am missing community a bit. I think I will go back this week and just do what I can. But does anyone else feel like they want to get all there gym workouts/classes in before baby comes because obviously it will be a challenge to get to a class once I have a baby. I also just some days don't have it in me to get to the gym, I get a pretty solid workout in at home but feel a bit antisocial.

Also, wowwww my breasts are so tender and sometimes my sports bras even are uncomfortable. Any suggestions for working out with breast tenderness or I just have to suck it up and roll with it haha?

Running at 5 weeks after FET

I’ve always been a runner. Running about 20-25 miles per week. I jogged this morning and felt good. Obviously I didn’t run as hard as I normally do.

My provider gave no guidance around exercising and has left it up to me to do what I feel is best.

Any advice on running?

1st trimester - waiting for the other shoe to drop symptom wise?

Hi all.

I'm quite early, 6+3ish, and so far the only symptom I've experienced is breast soreness. I've been able to keep at my usual workout level, 3-4 times a week lifting, because I haven't felt too exhausted or any nausea yet. So every day, I'm just kind of waiting for the shoe to drop and be knocked on my ass lol. Anyone care to share when the classic first tri symptoms kicked in? or if they never really did too bad and you were able to carry on fairly normally? Curious to hear other stories :)

Safe Pre-workout?

Hi all! My wife just found out she’s pregnant a couple weeks ago. She’s 7 weeks 1 day. Is there any safe pre-workout alternative?

She’s not a big fan of coffee.

She sent me this one but I’m skeptical…

Pregnant ladies in 2-3rd trimester what is your weight training workout routine??

How many workouts and is it effective/safe? I don’t want to lose my progress but also don’t want to cause strain and get hurt.

What do your stats look like around implantation, before a positive test?

I’m super curious if your RHR, HRV, and respiration stats changed at all before you even got a positive test!

I didn’t have my Garmin during my previous pregnancies and so I’m curious to know if it’s true that your watches picked up the pregnancy before a test did!

Fit pregnancy and earlier labor/ “on time”?

This is my second pregnancy and I’ve managed to stay fit throughout almost the whole time except for a few months in the first and second trimester. I’m now in week 31 and I swear to god every time I work out (light strength training twice a week) I feel like the baby is really getting deep down in my uterus…

Which made me wonder if there’s any correlation to regular exercise and giving birth “on time” around the due date or before?

Also in my first pregnancy was during lockdown so couldn’t really do much beside walking and I went 13 days past my due date, lol.

I know it’s purely anecdotally, but when have people in this sub given birth while staying active throughout pregnancy?

Abdominal discomfort/tightness after running - belly band or stop running?

Hey all, I'll be 22 weeks tomorrow. I've been getting some abdominal tightness after running along the sides/bottom of my abdomen - slightly painful but more discomfort. For others who've experienced this, do you think it's time for a belly band or a sign I should switch to different types of cardio? Don't want to hurt baby but bummed to think I'll stop running so soon. Thanks!!

Half marathon at 21 weeks!

Post image
50 Upvotes

I’ve since had to throw in the towel due to sciatica, other aches, plus huge belly/baby but I’m really proud of this. Husband and 17m old watched me and some friends cross the finish line, too! So much fun! I signed up for this before I got pregnant and I’m glad I got to see it through anyways. I did however withdraw from my full marathon at 23wks 😆

How far were you when...

19 wks along with baby number 2. My uterus is tilted and so my pregnancies stay in my pelvis for almost all 9 months (lucky me and my poor bladder lol), im starting to have difficulties doing leg days and it made me want to ask how far along were/are you when the belly/size of the baby, started making some exercises difficult/impossible? And when did you actually stop doing those exercises?

10K at 16 weeks with twins

This just feels like a huge win! Is it my fastest 10K? Not by a long shot 🤣 But am I proud? Extremely!

Despite having a fairly rough first trimester and a complicated pregnancy situation, I completed my first 10K race today. I had been regularly running 8-10K prior to becoming pregnant, and had signed up for this race at the beginning of the year. I was so excited to actually run my first official 10K race, but pregnancy really knocked me on my ass! The first two months I really struggled to breathe while running, and had to dial it back significantly. I had doubts I would be able to participate in today’s race.

Midway through my first trimester I had a subchorionic haemorrhage, but after bleeding subsided my OB cleared me again for physical activity, including running. I resumed training, albeit at a much slower and more infrequent pace. My running training days took longer. Then we found out I was carrying twins, and I wasn’t sure I would be able to keep running at all. It’s a complicated pregnancy, and one of the babies is not viable, which sucks, but I still had both of them on board with me for this race. I’ve had many appointments with my OB and MFM specialists and none of the concerns or complications are related to my health, so my doctors have all recommended I continue with my typical physical activity within my current range and supported my active lifestyle.

That’s a lot of words to say: I was in pretty great physical shape prior to pregnancy, so I had a good foundation; but I also had to really give myself grace and accept that I needed more time to run this race than I would have not pregnant. I had to modify my training plans frequently and I wasn’t sure unashamedly using a belly band during runs as early as 14 weeks. It’s not a competition against anyone, including yourself! I could not compete with non-pregnant me, so I didn’t even try. I just made sure to stay hydrated and keep a slow and steady pace and switch to walking when I needed. And most importantly, make sure you’re keeping your doctors looped in on what you’re doing and take their recommendations seriously! There’s nothing wrong with getting a second (or even third) opinion, but if your doctors are concerned about something, listen to them. You can always get back to the fitness goals postpartum 💜

Tell me it gets better

I’m 12 weeks 3 days with a very wanted baby. This is my first time being pregnant and I’m honestly gobsmacked by how hard it has been.

Since about 5 weeks I’ve been constantly nauseous and exhausted. If I don’t eat constantly I throw up stomach acid. I thought it would have started to improve by now but yesterday I took a sick day from work, slept all day and throw up 3 times, including immediately after taking gaviscon.

I have a prescription for Cyclizine but it doesn’t seem to do much. I am gaining so much weight as I am constantly having to eat. Before pregnancy I was very fit, active, productive person. Now I spend every evening and weekend lying on the sofa. I even have to lie in my car during the work day. I feel like shit. I haven’t ran in over a month. Running multiple times a week with my friends my main form of socialising during the week and now I can’t go and I have major fomo. I feel lonely and isolated despite my friends checking in a lot.

My husband has been amazing and I couldn’t ask for anything more from him. I am just mentally drained by feeling ill and fat and not being able to do any of my hobbies.

I guess I am looking for reassurance it will get better or others that have felt the same way?

I know others have it a lot worse than me, I’m just really feeling sorry for myself 😔

8 weeks pregnant, spotting arter very strenuous/heavy workout day

I work landscaping and thought I would be fine going on a big outing today. This evening after a near 10 km hike I noticed some light brown spotting in the later night hours. It's extremely late at night here and Im very worried for my baby as my only option is a hospital tomorrow or wait for my ultrasound in 4 days. I already had a previous miscarriage at 4 weeks and Im so worried for baby. Do I shoot myself to the hospital tomorrow or hold off until the ultrasound? Spotting has stopped, only noticed it for one wipe and a tiny brown clearing clot half the size of a fingernail
