not the main point but i am really hopeful that this will benefit fitbit users a lot. idea is when i started building recovery, strain and sleep scores, the math didn't worry me much. what worried me was getting a letter from one of the big wearable companies. their scores are black boxes, and anything that looks like a copy of a black box is asking for trouble.
so i went the other way. none of the scores in FitnessRec are black boxes:
- every score (sleep, recovery, strain, stress, biological age) has an algorithm breakdown: which of your numbers it used, each step of the formula, and the papers it's based on
- don't like my formula? rebuild it in flow studio. pull in your own data (fitbit, other watches, food diary, labs), write the formula, pick a gauge or chart, and pin it to your diary
- the card you build can sit on your home screen as a widget, and every card has a share image (pics 3 and 4)
"why isn't it open source then?" two reasons:
- people share flows and workout programs with each other: they send them in chats and post them to a feed. that needs accounts, a server and moderation, so you can't really self-host it
- reading fitbit data through the google health api for anyone other than yourself means passing google's restricted-scope verification plus a yearly CASA security assessment. with a self-hosted copy, every person would have to go through that themselves. i passed it this month so you don't have to
so the code is closed, but the scoring is open: you can see how every number is made, and you can change it.
free: the daily scores and their breakdowns, building and running your own flows, one pinned card. gold adds more pinned cards, widgets and AI steps in flows.
