Perhaps I just missed it or it’s obvious but I don’t understand how Wiegraf is allowed to work for the templars. I know that in wotl he gets recruited by Loffrey but isn’t he a wanted, well known revolutionary and criminal? I find it hard to belief that neither of the rulers care about that.
That was... hard, but fun! This was probably the hardest game I have ever played and I play a solid amount of games. Overall was pretty however I got some nitpicks of something a tad major than that:
Rend skills. I fucking despise them, they bring nothing to the game, they are in the game to ruin all the enjoyment you have. "Oh yeah im about to die, here is the last fuck you". This happened way too many times
Lack of music, by the end, the lack of variety is noticeable
Fft is kinda too focused on plot and relationship between characters is just thrown away completely after their side plot is complete
having trouble making my team for the last battle as mages seem to have low HP I can get wiped easily. do I do it anyway? how many healers if any should I have I just need advice for healing here. really eager to finally beat this boss. thanks
I'm just really confused about which one to play. I've never played any FF tactics but I've heard good things about it and online search has me a bit confused.
I've looked up the chronological release:
FF tactics 1997 PS1
FF tactics advance 2003 GBA
FF tactics war of the lons 2007 PSP
FF tactics A2 2007 DS
FF tactics the Ivalice chronicles 2025 PC
I initially thought about playing it chronologically but people seem to just recommend a single version such as a mobile version (like the one on the play store?, idk).
I guess my biggest question is, if I played a later/modern version, would I be missing out on anything by not playing the previous versions first?
yo, this is my first time playing FF Tactics the Ivalice Chronicles, I’m on the final boss Ultima, I keep getting wiped after a few turns. my main problem is too much aoe damage and I just die in a few turns every time which is surprising because I’m basically level 60 on all my characters. i am down to going back to the world map to grind for certain jobs if anyone gives me a solid party.. I have optional characters mustadio, agrias, rapha, Marach, Orlandeu, Meliadoul, Beowulf, Construct 8, Reis and Cloud. if any of these optional characters should be in the party let me know and what the abilities I should use, and what jobs. as I said I don’t mind leaving and grinding for a solid party / team. I also have regular characters but those are the optional ones I have. thanks
So im running a white mage, Holy spam and Summon for aoe but he keeps dying, always first, the moment he gets into range of anyone, everyone focuses him.
For those familiar with FFIX Excalibur II Perfect Game runs, stat optimisation is a big part of defining how the perfect game save would look like for each individual, even before the run starts. Someone great back then managed to create a program for it: http://letao.is-a-geek.net/ff9stats/
For those who are unfamiliar, in FFIX bonus stats are granted depending on the equipment worn during the level up, and by keeping levels as low as possible throughout the run, you can achieve optimal stats at L99 by levelling up while wearing equipment that grants more stats near the end of the game.
In FFT, when we think about max stats the thing that comes to mind is often the level up/down trick. What I have in mind is a bit different: Since in FFT bonus stats are granted depending on the job the character is in during the level up, what are the best stats that each character can achieve in a single L1 to L99 path?
Unfortunately I do not have the technical skills to create a stat optimisation program, so I turned to the next best thing: AI.
Firstly, I ordered the stats in decreasing level of importance: FinalSP(Final Speed), FinalPA, FinalMA, RawHP. Next, I supplied the jobs and their growths for HP SP PA MA respectively:
- Knight: 10 100 40 50
- Monk: 9 100 48 50
- Ninja: 12 80 43 50
Unlike FFIX, this order should be pretty self-explanatory. RawHP needs to be maximised while the other RawStats should be as close to the minimum threshold as possible. Doing so creates maximum buffer so that initial rolls for RawHP can be lowered as much as possible to still achieve the maximum FinalHP at L99.
---
Taking Ramza for example, the optimal path provided by AI was as follows:
- Level 1 to 9 as Monk
- Level 9 to 10 as GallantKnight
- Level 10 to 99 as Ninja
The sharp ones would notice something, the absence of Mime growth. The choice is deliberate, if Mime were to be included in stat growth I do not think the run itself would be possible. In IC, every character after Mustadio and Agrias (who join at L12) joins at party level, which means that Ramza and co would have to be below L12 the entire game up til the point Meliadoul is recruited to maximise the number of level growths in Mime. In WotL, while the limits are a bit higher because Luso joins at L25 during Chapter 3, and Balthier joins at L35 during Chapter 4, the issue is pretty much similar.
This results in 366 FinalHP, 13 FinalSP, 18 FinalPA, 16 FinalMA as an L99 Gallant Knight.Verifying it with FFT Companion App shows that swapping from Monk to Ninja at L10 causes Ramza to lose 1 FinalSP at L99 (13>12), while swapping from Monk to Ninja at L9 causes Ramza to lose 1 FinalHP at L99 (366>365). There is no way to prevent the -1 FinalMA (17>16), requiring so much Ninja growth for +2 FinalSP means he can no longer hit the 17 MA threshold regardless (this would be a problem for Reis as well).
After settling on this path, I check the minimum initial RawHP required to achieve 366 HP, it ends up being 527040 (best possible initial RawHP is 527287).
Taking Reis as a second example, the optimal levelling path is (apparently):
- L1 to L45 as Dragonkin
- L45 to L48 as Ninja
- L48 to L50 as Dragonkin
- L50 to L57 as Ninja
- L57 to L58 as Dragonkin
- L58 to L99 as Ninja
This results in 685 FinalHP, 15 FinalSP, 16 FinalPA, 18 FinalMA. I won't pretend to understand why the optimal levelling path is like this.
Verifying it with FFT Companion App, going the straightforward
- L1 to L47 as Dragonkin
- L47 to L99 as Ninja
Results in -1 FinalHP (685>684) as an L99 Dragonkin. The interesting thing is that swapping back to Dragonkin at exactly L98 instead of L99 actually allows FinalHP to be at 685 without sacrifcing FinalSP. I can only assume the path given by AI results in the maximum RawHP buffer (not verified). Minimum RawHP needed at L1 is 491106 (maximum possible is 491519).

I will be optimising the growth of all the story characters, along with Alicia (her Zodiac sign plays the best with a Capricorn Ramza + Agrias + Reis + Orlandeau/Balthier team). Playing it on WotL, really couldn't get into IC despite already clearing Midlight's Deep, just playing IC to platinum it at this point.
With that I start my first battle. Not. About 32 hours of playing the tutorial battles later:
Finally, a Ramza with more than 524040 initial rawHP!
Now we start our first battle. The goal is simple for now, Ramza has to remain below L25 by the end of Chapter 3 (when Rapha and Marach join), so everything has to be done through overflow JP or Rendevous missions.
43 enemy Chemist levels laterYay spillover JP
For the upcoming battle at Mandalia Plains, every non-Ranza unit will be turned into an Archer. The battle features an enemy Thief, which means a crystal of at least an Job Level 4 archer is going to drop for Ramza, and maybe Steal Gil and/or Steal Heart. This also allows the other units to unlock Thief for Steal Heart, which will be very important because the third battle at Siedge Weald consists of monsters that scale to party level.

Q: Why this post?
A: I'm wondering if there is someone out there who has been fiddling with stat optimisation in FFT, who can verify the solutions given by AI. Reis' levelling path took a lot of time to coax out, for a while I didn't even know you could swap back to Dragonkin at L98 instead of L99 to achieve 685 FinalHP while keeping FinalSP at 15.
Q: Why not use a save editor?
A: For the same reason why anyone plays perfect games and/or challenges: pleasure through self-torture. Also, if I can learn some coding / stat optimisation skills through this it's an added plus.

If I'm lucky I'll probably be able to update progress once every two weeks, until the start of Chapter 2 that is. That's when the soft resets for Alicia happen~
Anyone still unable to use a controller after updating to 2.6.0? Using a 8bitdo lite 2 that is functioning fine when I play ff7 but not working when I open fft:wotl on my gen1 iPad Pro. Curious if anyone else had any issues getting a controller to work.
It's been a few months since I last shared an update, so I thought I'd show you what I've been cooking up lately, and where the game is heading!
I've continued polishing the tactical battles, abilities, and character progression. The dual-profession system and permanent upgrades remain a major focus, as I really want players to be able to experiment with all sorts of crazy character builds.
I've also made some changes to the overall gameplay loop. The game now revolves around expeditions into different regions, with surviving veterans carrying their progress into future adventures. I also started to shape out Varyindel, the world in which the game takes place, and I hope you are going to love the mistery around it as much as I do!
I've put together a short gameplay trailer showing both the current state of the tactical battles and the strategic layer.
Over the course of 20 episodes (roughly an hour long each) we dive deep into the plots, themes, characters, politics, gameplay, art, and music of Final Fantasy Tactics!
(It's like a book club for the game, we use the original WotL translation)
i was doing some research and found that the translation for fft advance was sanatized removing things like the fact the book is eating their souls. to people that know how faithful was the translation if it isnt then can i find somewhere to get a better version
Long, Long time player of every version of FFT. I’ve never really done the Zeklaus Desert Trap Trick. I don’t know if it even works in the Ivalice Chronicles version of the game, although I assume it does. I know that generally the idea is to level down as a weak class, or a class whose stats you don’t want, and then level up as a class you like, but the mechanics get confusing. I’ve tried it before briefly and I think I just weakened my characters, and then I kind of gave up, lost the will power to carry through with the super crunchy details.
Other than Zeklaus Desert, are there other Maps that you can do the Trick on, just for variety? What’s the set up, in terms of abilities? How long does the process take? What are the best classes to LVL Down and then Up? I guess it depends on the build you’re going for right?
I’ve played so many rounds of battles and beaten the game so many times, but Ivalice Chronicles is the first time I’ve been really curious about all the nitty gritty content like hidden items, monster breeding, poaching, treasure hunting, and all the endgame / postgame stuff, because the addition of the new features and NG+ Mode really breathes life into one of my favorite games ever.
I’m the user that posted the question about Knight Swords in Araguay Woods and Midlights Deep the other day. It’s working great! I have found this Reddit community to be extremely helpful and friendly, so I hope it’s okay that I ask for support with this endeavor too…I figure I’m not the only one who wants to min max my private army 😂
