I’m hoping to hear from people who are familiar with Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), especially current or former members, or people who are in relationships with INC members.
I’m currently dating a Filipina who is a member of INC. I’m not Filipino myself, and I’m also a Christian, although I don’t attend church as regularly as she does. I was baptised as a Christian and grew up believing that Jesus is the Son of God.
As our relationship has started getting more serious, I’ve begun thinking about how our religious differences might affect our future together, especially if we eventually get engaged or married.
At one point, she brought up the possibility of me converting to INC if we were to get married.
I understand that her faith is important to her, and I respect that. However, conversion is not something I can take lightly, especially when there are significant differences between what I grew up believing and what INC teaches about Jesus.
I don’t want religion to become something that creates tension between us, but I also don’t want either of us to feel pressured to give up our beliefs just to make the relationship work.
How does INC generally view relationships and marriage between a member and someone who isn’t part of the church? Is conversion generally expected before marriage, or does it depend on the individual and their circumstances?
What happens if an INC member falls in love with someone who is already a Christian but belongs to a different denomination? Is being a Christian yourself viewed differently from having no religious beliefs?
Is it realistic for an INC member and a non-member Christian to have a long-term relationship or marriage without the non-member converting? I’d especially appreciate hearing from people who have experienced this themselves.
How much influence does the church have over a member’s personal relationship and marriage decisions? For example, would differences in religious beliefs become a problem for the couple or their families later on?
What if neither person is willing to convert? Have any couples managed to make this work while respecting each other’s beliefs?
I’m asking because I care about this person and want to understand what a future together might realistically look like. I’m not trying to attack INC or disrespect her faith. I know that religious beliefs are personal, and I want to approach this with an open mind.
At the same time, I believe conversion should come from genuine conviction, not simply from the fear of losing someone you love.
I’d really appreciate honest answers, especially from current or former INC members and people who have been in similar relationships.
