Please ensure your post to r/email is on-topic for the community BEFORE you post. This is a forum for those interested in e-mail marketing, technology ("martech"), and e-mail deliverability.

For clarity, the subreddit is explicitly NOT for:

  • shilling for e-mail products, tools, or services, whether free or paid (or driving traffic elsewhere to do the same) - THIS IS A BANNABLE FIRST OFFENSE;
  • naked or low-effort crossposting, either between subreddits or from your (or anyone else's) blog;
  • requests for e-mail technical support for your personal e-mail inbox(es). These belong in the communities for the respective providers;
  • requests for assistance in recovering access to your (or someone else's) inbox;
  • soliciting assistance from the community to abuse e-mail (please note that spam - or 'cold e-mail' - is e-mail abuse);
  • discussions or advice about personal e-mail etiquette;
  • job or internship opportunities or announcements of their availability, or resumes of those who may be looking for them.

If any of the bullets above describe your post, you should expect it to be deleted promptly. Persistent attempts to post off-topic material will further result in a ban.

Love,

Your Friendly Neighborhood Mod Team.

Domain and email

Thoughts on Dynadot for a domain and Fastmail for email?

My son and I will start by sharing one email address, answers@blahblahblah.com, and we’ll both need to log in through a browser. The plan is to grow into a sales team and add a website later.

Does this setup make sense for starting small and growing, or would you recommend something else?

This new Yahoo Mail is absolutely terrible.

  1. Starting off with the most important: READ EMAILS ARE NOT MARKED AS READ. The number count doesn't change, the text doesn't become unbolded, and the dot remains! The only way to mark it as read is to click the dot! This is terrible programming. This has never been a problem with any Email service I've ever used in the past 20+ years. I tried all of their troubleshooting steps until they just said that they have a technical issue on their end, but it has been DAYS, and this hasn't been fixed. Unacceptable.
  2. I have multiple mailboxes linked to Yahoo Mail, and they used to all show on the left, so I can check if there are new Emails at a glance. Now I have to go down to the hover icon to check, which, because of the aforementioned Read Mail issue, shows incorrect Unread mail numbers. There is still space in the left column; why remove it from there or remove the option to place them there?
  3. The new colors are painful to look at, especially in dark mode. I get headaches from bright lights, so I prefer dark mode, but the white-on-grey color scheme is terrible and strains the eyes. If other people like it, that's fine, but at least allow us to choose the old themes that aren't terrible! Why force us to pick between two bad options when themes already existed and worked fine?
  4. What is with these "achievements" and gamifying deleting emails? It's slowing me down, making me click away. Why would you introduce full-screen pop-ups to show achievements I don't care about and did not opt in to? Is this trying to be unprofessional? Is this trying to get in the way of productivity?

I just don't understand why Yahoo would try to break what isn't broken without giving users the options and controls to customize it as they would want, which would be an actual improvement. It feels like they're trying to lose users.

Luckily, there is an extension that helps it get back to the basic version, but it's still not ideal.

EDIT: Better Yahoo Extension with the Basic UI (Old UI doesn't work).

The new Yahoo mail is lame

The new UI takes up a 3rd of the real estate on the right by introducing a useless panel I don't care about, list items are too large, and incoming emails take a long time to show up in the list. Why can't these companies NOT fix what's not broken?? Same with FaceCrook; it used to have a fast and responsive UI until the dolts who run it decided it would be a good idea to introduce a sluggish, memory-intensive UI that runs like crap. New and Improved my arse.

Open Question Yahoo Mail - How to move away

Have a Yahoo email account from the very beginning. It's not my primary, but it has a TON of history I would like to preserve. GBs of it. But I HATE the new format. What is the best method to move all of this history to a new provider? I was going to purchase a Proton email account but I've been reading how many people have issues with vendors and such rejecting anything with a Proton email address. Thoughts? Help?

how can i open an email in Gmail without triggering the sender’s tracking software?

this isn't a request for tech support, rather seeking info from this group. i'm not particularly familiar with email tracking software, browser extensions, or the technical side of Gmail

in short, i need to read an email without the sender knowing i've opened it. i know they use email tracking software, although i'm not sure which platform.. i'm pretty sure it's hubspot, and their company uses Gmail if that's any help

i've read that disabling external images in Gmail can prevent tracking pixels from loading, but is that actually reliable? are there other ways these tools can detect when an email has been opened?

my questions:

  • is there a reliable way to read a Gmail message without triggering an open notification?
  • would disabling external images or using a tracking-blocker extension be sufficient?
  • is there a way to view the email's contents without loading any tracking elements?
  • could a simple script or AI-generated tool help with this, or would that be unnecessary?

i'm looking for a technical solution, not just a way to mark the email as unread afterward. any advice from developers, IT professionals, or anyone familiar with email tracking would be appreciated.. thanks!!

Open Question Is there anything I can do if my email went to spam and I have no other way of contacting the person?

A week ago I sent an email to a mentor from high school (graduated last year for the record, not like 10 years or something lol), I was asking about their career as I’m really considering going into it next year and wanted some advice.

It’s by no means urgent, I know, but I think it may be in spam because today I forwarded something to myself from my outlook account (which I used for the email) to my gmail account, and it went in my gmail spam. Does that mean it’s likely to be in their spam too?

I’m contacting this person from their person gmail as they gave it to me to be able to email after high school, and this is my first time contacting it from my outlook account. I don’t have any other way of contacting them though, so I’m stuck if it is in spam.

If I email them from my gmail account instead, would it be more likely to go to inbox since they are both gmails? Or would it just end up in spam again since it would be the same kind of message?

Sorry if this post is very odd, is there anything I can do about this?

Any one using resend paid plan ?

I've been using the Resend free tier for the past couple of months, and I'm consistently getting strong deliverability within the 3,000 emails/month (100/day) limit.

Given this, I'm now considering upgrading to a paid plan to support higher sending volume. Any recommendations on which plan would be the best fit, and are there any tips to keep in mind when making the transition?

Open Question I need to email ~20k people in my institution (via Gmail), but I do not have a way to do it.

Hello, this is my following problem:

I need to email ~20k people but Gmail has a limit on how many recipients can be messages. Perhaps I could try Outlook but I don't believe I have my institution account tied to Outlook.

I wanted to use google groups, but I believe the recipients have to accept the invitation to be in such a group which would definitely be impractical, unless there's another method.

I try to copy and paste every address on a list, my computer freezes.

That's primarily it, thank you.

Outlook Deliverability Issues

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from people who manage email deliverability.

Recently, I've noticed a decline in inbox placement with Outlook/Hotmail. Many emails are landing in the junk folder rather than the inbox, and some sending IPs have also been listed
I'm trying to understand whether this is related to sender reputation, authentication, sending practices, or other factors.

Backdate email - with access to both sender and recipient s cPanel.

Can it be done? Not asking anyone to do it - just wondering if its possible. If one should have sendt an email long time ago, but life happened and that was not done at the right time, can one with access to both domains make it look like it was sent when one should have sendt it? Asking for a friend that insists that this would be impossible. Appreciate your time.

Yahoo Mailboxes Hidden Bottom Left of Screen

Hi all, I just got the new Yahoo Email. Love the speed but my other Yahoo inboxes have been demoted from top left (where I could see new messages hit) to bottom left/not visible. Any way to move them up the page ?

Best Email Tool for Small Holiday Program

I'm part of a group that organizes an "Adopt A Family" program each holiday season, and looking for recommendations on what platform I should be using that meets my very basic needs.

Relevant info:

  • This list is only used for this program so I'm only sending emails out for 2 months out the year (late Oct - mid Dec). Given that it's a 100% volunteer driven effort, I would prefer for it to be as low cost as possible
  • Our donor list is currently a little over 500 people, but I'd expect that to grow over time as our program has built momentum over the years (we had ~180 new donors in 2025)
  • All emails are currently sent from my personal gmail and since they're to donors who have participated in the program before, there's already some kind of prior interaction with me (I see a bunch of acronyms like SPF/DKIM...not sure if that's relevant in my case)
  • I used to use a combo of free Mailchimp + Mailmeteor + manual Gmail follow-ups to reach this group. I used free Mailchimp to do our generic program kick-off emails/blasts (2-3 emails total) + Mailmeteor to mail merge the subsequent donor/family match emails (1 email per person) + went through my emails manually to follow up with any donors that needed follow-up
  • Our email have historically been a simple image header and a wall of text, but I'd like to create a custom template this year to make it easier to consume
  • The matching emails are the most complex - given variations in family sizes, delivery details, etc., I typically end up creating about a dozen different templates to accommodate all these combinations. Mailmeteor has GSheet add-in functionality (and I'm very comfortable with spreadsheets) so I've just used that, but I'm open to doing it all in platform if there are efficiencies with the above
  • I don't need SMS (unless it's free to send, which I don't think is the case) or any robust analytics (I basically just need to see my open rate)

I was able to cull our donor list to the Mailchimp free tier limits last year, but this year I need something that supports more subscribers. I was looking at EmailOctopus (simply due to the number of free subscribers on their free tier) but not sure if there's something better or if it's worth actually upgrading to paid for any of these other services.

Any recommendations?

That new Yahoo mail is awful

I hated it

Congratulations, they made it! They pissed of a a 20+ year user and a avid Yahoo evangelist. Not anymore.

The previous interface was just fine. Now the mobile experience is awful (I was using the PC version at my phone because the previous mobile layout is also awful).

What's your favorite email client and why?

I see a lot of people using third party apps like thunderbird, and I'm not sure what's I'm missing out on. The default that usually comes with workplace emails (Gmail, outlook) or the default mail app on mac/iphone looks fine to me. What made you try out other clients?

I recently started using Purelymail, and the webmail client works perfectly fine but feels a bit dated. That got me wondering whether a dedicated client would be a real upgrade or just extra setup for the sake of it.

Client says “email looks good” in Slack or email, then disputes it after the send. How do you handle campaign approvals?

I run an email agency (Klaviyo, eCommerce). The part of the workflow that kept biting me wasn’t building the emails. It was catching a broken link, spelling mistake or blank merge tag before the client saw it, and proving later what they actually approved.

I ended up building a small tool for it: a QA check first, then one approval link with a name and timestamp.

Curious how others handle it. Screenshots in Slack? PDF proofs? Approval inside the ESP? If anyone wants to see what I built, say so and I’ll share it.

Open Question Looking for linux altertnatives to Thunderbird and SeaMonkey email clients which can manage a list of multiple email accounts.

To be clear, I am not asking for any kind of technical assistance here. Rather, I am writing this message solely to ask about the existence of a certain kind of email client. And if such clients are recommended, I also want it to be clearly understood that I am not wanting any kind of technical help in installing or running the email client. I only want nothing more than the name or names of such clients that I will now describe.

I'm running on Debian linux version 13.

I have around a dozen different email accounts, and for years, I've been successfully using the SeaMonkey and Thunderbird email clients to manage all of these accounts. The reason for my having chosen these email clients is because both of them present me with a full list of all my email accounts when I launch the client, and I can then select any of these accounts in order to read and send emails for the selected account.

I'm wondering if there also might be any other GUI-based email clients that run under linux which can manage multiple accounts and also present a list of all accounts when the client is launched.

I do not want any kind of unified inbox. I want each of my email accounts to be managed separately and to be selectable from a list that I immediately see when I launch the client.

And I am not interested in a command-line based email client that uses ncurses or similar software, but rather, I want a client which presents me with an X-Windows-based GUI.

And I don't want a GUI that is built to be a front end to any specific email service. I want the email client to use SMTP and IMAP for managing emails that are being handled by whatever SMTP/IMAP services that I specify.

Does anyone know of any other such email clients besides Thunderbird and SeaMonkey which run under linux?

Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions.

Do SPF and DMARC still matter for email?

I checked my own domain yesterday.

Root TXT was just a Google site verification. No SPF. _dmarc returned NXDOMAIN, so no DMARC either. DKIM was already there.

I published SPF and a DMARC p=none today so I at least get reports.

Do mailbox providers still punish missing SPF or DMARC, or a policy that's just p=none? Is p=none worth having at all? What else do you usually check, MX, DKIM, BIMI?

Notes from adding JMAP to a client that already spoke IMAP and Graph: discovery, push, and resync

I maintain a desktop mail client (MailVault, disclosure at the end). It already handled IMAP and Microsoft Graph, and I just shipped JMAP (RFC 8620/8621) alongside them. These are the protocol details that took real work, in case they’re useful to anyone else implementing it or running a JMAP server.

1. Autodiscovery is four lookups with a fixed priority, not one

All four run at the same time, each with a 4 second cap:

  1. Known provider. The domain is Fastmail’s, or its MX record points at messagingengine.com, which catches Fastmail custom domains.
  2. https://<domain>/.well-known/jmap
  3. https://jmap.<domain>/.well-known/jmap
  4. SRV _jmap._tcp.<domain>, then .well-known/jmap on the host it names.

The winner is picked by that priority, not by whichever answers first. Racing them keeps discovery under about 4 seconds, so it never holds up the IMAP lookup running next to it.

Two traps:

  • A bare 401 proves nothing. Every Basic-auth-protected site on the internet answers with one. A probe only counts as JMAP when it gets a 200 whose JSON has apiUrl, or a 401 with WWW-Authenticate that it reached from /.well-known/jmap and whose final path looks like a JMAP endpoint.
  • Keep the URL you landed on after redirects. If the client stores the starting .well-known URL instead, a client that only follows redirects on the same host refuses the very hop the user just approved.

2. Discovered hosts need a trust rule before credentials go out

No probe sends credentials. Credentials go without asking only to your own domain, a subdomain of it, or Fastmail’s API host for Fastmail addresses. For anything else, the user confirms the host, port included (jmap.example.com:8443), before the first authenticated request. Without that step, a hijacked DNS record becomes a password collector.

3. Push over EventSource needs a dead-stream detector

The client subscribes with types=Email,Mailbox&closeafter=no&ping=30. A stream that sends no bytes for twice the ping interval plus 5 seconds counts as dead and gets dropped. After repeated failures it falls back to polling, and it tries push again every 10 minutes. A session with no eventSourceUrl just polls. Half-open connections that never error out are the real problem, and the ping is the only way to see one.

4. cannotCalculateChanges must never touch the local copy

When Email/changes can’t compute changes from a stored state, the client rebuilds its header cache from the newest page of each mailbox and drops rows for mail that’s gone. It counts as a backfill: no “new mail” notifications, no local message file touched, and each message keeps its local ID. This matters most for an archiving client. A server-side state reset should never look like mass deletion or a flood of new mail.

Smaller fix from the same release: messages with no In-Reply-To or References (old “Fw:” mail, some webmail exports) were being threaded by subject alone. A two-year-old forward opened as the first message of an unrelated new thread. Subject-only threading now needs another message in the thread within 30 days, and picks the nearest one.

Question for server operators: which servers do you see publishing .well-known/jmap vs _jmap._tcp in the wild? I’ve tested Fastmail properly. I’d like to know which discovery paths actually get used before I spend more time on the others.

Disclosure: I’m the developer. MailVault is free, with an optional paid tier. No link here. Ask if you want it.
