Day 26. Zip
Wow-Wow Sauce, a mixture of mature scumble, pickled cucumbers, capers, mustard, mangoes, figs, grated wahooni, anchovy essence, asafetida and, significantly, sulfur and saltpetre for added potency. Ridcully inherited the formula from his uncle who, after half a pint of sauce on a big meal one evening, had a charcoal biscuit to settle his stomach, lit his pipe and disappeared in mysterious circumstances, although his shoes were found on the roof the following summer.

Okay, sorry, one more Munchkin thing. But this is so amazing. I was in London just a few weeks ago and met with Rob Wilkins. He was Sir Terry’s assistant and is now in charge of the Discworld legacy. Rob is a very nice guy, was wholly encouraging about the project, and had some great suggestions and insights. Especially into the “Dark Clerks,” a Discworld class based on Lord Vetinari’s “confidential agents.” Think “Discworld Men in Black . . . who know only what Lord V tells them.” Terry
didn’t get the time to flesh this group out, so they never got their own book, but they can star in Munchkin Discworld!

Finished these about 3 weeks ago, looking for quotes or sayings to fill the dead space. Was thinking of the reaper man quote, the Hogfather quote, or just simple things like "Crivens!", "De Chenolian Mobile"
Any ideas or thoughts?

Day 25. Fracture
It was a state of permanent inter-species vendetta and, like all good vendettas, didn’t really need a reason any more. It was enough that it had always existed. Dwarfs hated trolls because trolls hated dwarfs, and vice versa.

Posting late again, but it's still October²!
Ever since I finished reading this book, I've been wanting to draw the saddest of the unggue pots. This time I'm posting it as a video instead of an image because I imagine it shines that way, and it just so happened that I had the right paint to try it.
Also, have you ever seen a baby bird? They look quite goblin-ish to me!
Just for the record: I'm trying to do this year's Disctober cockatiel-themed. I owe them the inspiration to participate this year, so why not an entire series :)
This is the penult or last one I'll do because I haven't read the other books yet, but I'm happy that many enjoyed the silliness with me!

I’ve just finished Reaper Man (my fourth Discworld novel after The Colour of Magic, Mort and Wyrd Sisters), and even though I really enjoyed it, one thing is bugging me. In the plotline with the wizards at the University, I just couldn’t picture who was who. Whenever “the Bursar” or “Ridcully” popped up, I was like “who? ...anyway.” Was I not reading carefully enough, or are these characters just not very developed in the novel?
In comparison, I feel like there was not much more description for the members of the Fresh Start Club, yet I did not feel the same for those characters.

Hi folks,
I’ve been slowly getting my grandfather into reading more over the past year or so.
We’ve started with the Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy books, which he really liked, so naturally, I feel like Discworld he would also enjoy (me being a huge fan, I also want him to try the series).
He’s a big fan of 70s/80s British humour (think Monty Python, Blackadder etc.), which is another reason why I think he’d enjoy Terry’s writing.
I think humour and a good plot is more important to him than crazy world building and magic etc. as I think he struggled a little when things in the Douglas Adam’s books got a little whacky at times.
Initially, I think something like Small Gods could work, but would be keen to hear what you all think/would recommend?
Thanks

Just checking with you smart people because i've never (I know, I know!) watched Lawrence of Arabia, but I thought that might be the reference for Carrot while in Klatch.
I probably have to watch the movie now which will thrill my fella to no end. 😊

I'm looking for a collection of Discworld idioms or sayings and all I can find are endless collections of the best quotes. That's lovely, and it's been good reading, but what I'm really after is a list of uniquely Discworld sayings along the lines of "a leopard cannot change their shorts" or "music with rocks in". Anyone have a link to a repository of that specific sort of quote?

SPOILERS LIKELY for City Watch
I just reread Guards! Guards! and was thinking about the plot in that book and how risky it clearly was (the state of *that* book for one thing!). It makes for a very fun story but is so ridiculous!
It got me curious about which villains people like best from the series, and who had the best/most realistic/entertaining plan 😈

Falling behind!

I am currently listening to Feet of Clay again, English is not my native language, so I always wondered why her name is so funny. It's not any weirder than Corporal Visits full name, or even Nobby Nobs, there are a ton of characters with weird names. 😅
I get that it's not a real dwarf name and of course I get why it's funny, but why is it such a big deal in the books? Is there any hidden meaning or reference I am missing?
r/discworld • u/kam_pra • 3d ago
Wondering about names like little bottom, vetinari, moist von lipwig, dunmanifestin, casanunda and so many other names we are so used to reading in his books.
Did he get a flash of inspiration when he got the perfect double meaning or do you think he had a load of notes where he tried out variations to see which was best for his characters or scenes.
So with casanunda he already might have had a dwarvish lothario with a ladder that needed a name or did the dwavishness and ladder come because he already had the perfect name?
