Explore the connections behind Discogs releases

Post image

Hey everyone,

I've been working for the past year on a side project called DeepDiggr and thought some people here might find it interesting.

The idea is to make it easier to explore artists, labels and the connections between them. You can start with an artist (or a label) you like, click on a node to see who they’ve worked with and listen to their tracks together, discover the labels they’re connected to, and keep digging until you end up somewhere you wouldn’t have searched for directly.

It's built using Discogs data, with 10M+ artists / 17M+ tracks currently mapped and you can jump to the original Discogs page for any artist, label or release if you want more details.

For example, here's Kerri Chandler on DeepDiggr.

Here's the link if you want to try it (no account needed): https://deepdiggr.com/

Let me know if you discover any interesting connections

Cool idea! But how can the info be verified, edited, or added? I think the more niche you go, the less info you’ll find. I will definitely test it out to see.

Thanks! Everything comes from the Discogs monthly data dump available here https://data.discogs.com/?prefix=data%2F2026%2F , so edits and additions are made on Discogs and show up here. The disc icon next to a release takes you to the Discogs page to compare (One thing to know: Discogs often has several duplicate entries for the same release via different pressings, reissues, etc, and DeepDiggr merges them, so a release here can show credits combined from several Discogs entries and may not match a single page exactly).

You’re right that niche artists have less data, since the map can only be as complete as the credits on Discogs. Curious to hear how it goes!

Very cool! I already learned something, success!

One observation on the UI: I searched for an artist, Tom Waits, and the clicked on a node, William S. Burroughs. Each time I tried to return to Tom Waits, I ended cancelling the search and landing back at the Kerri Chandler page.

Good stuff!

Thanks for the feedback. If you have the side panel opened on the tracks between Tom Waits & William S Burroughs you can click on the close button on the top of this side panel or click anywhere in the blank space of the map as a shortcut to discard it.

The return button is for going to the previous artist (that's why you returned to Kerri Chandler)

Interesting. I just went back in and between all the options (X on upper right, drag down, and back arrow) I still found the navigation a little clunky. I was able to navigate back to Tom Waits but also landed on Kerri Chandler again.

Why, when I search, will a band come up multiple times in the search results and display different matching artists? Little Stranger gives three results, when I select each I get different matching artists? I just want to know how to dig in, this is pretty great.

So far, the only interesting feature I’ve found is the listening function. By the way, where does it pull the audio file from?
