I actually work for an animal control agency and it shocked me how cute skunks are in person. They almost look animatronic at times. Especially with the black beady eyes.

u/HelmSpicy Jan 05 '26
They are cute, but they sure scare the hell out of you when you're walking home after dark and look down to see one waddling a couple feet from you. Thank god the ones in my city are super chill

u/Spare-Security-1629 Jan 05 '26
Yeah, I actual have a family of them that lives under my crawl space and every once in a while I bump into them at night. lol, we both freeze and I slowly go back into the house until they go where they need to go
7
u/ThirdAndDeleware Jan 05 '26
And the babies!! Whenever I run into baby skunks, it pushes my self-control to the limit because they are so adorable. I want to run and grab one.
8
u/Spare-Security-1629 Jan 05 '26
Yes, they are adorable. Every year or so, I have a new litter that comes under my house and they are too young to spray but they try to bluff and stomp their little feet lol.

u/Ziegelmarkt Jan 05 '26
Funky lookin' cat.

u/Kindaspia Jan 06 '26
Living skunks can have their scent glands removed, so they don’t spray. However, they are not allowed in the cabins of most airlines.

Grew up with a kid that had one as a pet. It was orphaned, they had it de-skunked and neutered when it was very small. The thing lived as long as most cats do.
They lived in a pretty large log cabin (N. Idaho) and the thing would just waddle around the house like a cat. It would curl up to you on the couch and they taught it to use the litter box.
It got pretty good sized, like 12-14 pounds. I think that's big for a skunk.

u/NotDTJr Jan 05 '26
Skunks can be pretty big, I saw a little family in Wisconsin and they were all larger than I had expected

My old neighbor told me how she used to have a skunk as a pet, and it was the best pet she ever had. Unfortunately, skunks are illegal to have as pets in NY now. If they ever overturn that, I'll be first in line to get one because they are so dang cute. There's a few that live in my backyard, and I love watching them waddle around.

To have a taxidermy animal? Yes.

LOL!!! I was waiting to see how this post panned out. That's hilarious. Did TSA ask you to open your bag?
31
u/Yousaveferris Jan 05 '26
lol I put him in the bin with my backpack- they laughed. The TSA lady who went through my work bag (I travel for work with jewelry so I always get pulled if they have the older machines) laughed but didn’t want to touch it. The delta bag lady asked to pet it.

It’s usually shocks the FAs. This is the third piece I’ve brought on board a flight. I’ve got 27 more weekends for shows to collect more this year.
15
Jan 05 '26
No disrespect but this would creep me the fuck out on a flight…
5
u/Yousaveferris Jan 05 '26
Totally understand, thankfully I don’t ever have random people sitting next to me.

u/Yousaveferris Jan 05 '26
Should I put a service animal vest on it? Would that help?

As a non passenger on this flight, and as a huge skunk lover, YES! If I saw this in real time, I would be concerned 🙃

I’m an Airbus captain, if you brought that up to the flight deck 100% getting a picture in my seat with it. Stop by next time!

I had a pet skunk as a kid. Sweetest pet ever, loved me just as much as my dogs do. He’d be hungry in the mornings and would need to be snuggled before he ate… like he would starve in exchange for affection lol. God I miss that skunk.

I would ask for 100k miles from emotional distress if I was anywhere near you on the plane
1
u/Yousaveferris Jan 05 '26
I have it- because I got it at a show that I was working at- and now I need to bring it home? I don’t want it to break- so it has to be out in the open.

u/Sheetz_Wawa_Market32 Jan 05 '26
I’m sorry, but that’s ridiculous. Of course it could be probably packed. You just don’t want to bother. (A plastic bag would do in a crunch.)

u/Yikes206 Jan 05 '26
The fact that people are defending a stranger's assertion that an old taxidermy skunk cannot possibly be covered up and must be fully on display during a flight -- might be slightly more ridiculous than the act itself.

u/GrossUsername68 Jan 05 '26
Genuine questions:
Do you have the same reaction to people who wear the skin of animals? Leather gloves, shoes, belts, etc.?
Do you eat meat?
Because I’m really trying to figure out the consistency behind your outrage.
4
u/Some-Panda7404 Jan 05 '26
Oh please… this is a false equivalence. Eating meat and wearing leather are normalized in society.. bringing dead animals on a plane and showing off is not. Full stop.
0
u/GrossUsername68 Jan 06 '26
Eating meat and wearing leather are normalized in society
And it doesn’t really make it any less strange that eating pigs is normalized whereas eating dogs is stigmatized. Hence the equivalency: your reaction is emotional, not rational. It’s just a normalized irrational behavior, allowing you to feel entitled to being judgmental instead of minding your own business when eating a hamburger next to a vegetarian.
bringing dead animals on a plane and showing off is not
The point was that it not be destroyed. But also, tell that to everyone wearing animal skin on their hands, and fur around their neck.
They are, literally, dead animals. Just without the ‘look’ of a dead animal.
If I brought a mummy aboard for a historical society, or was wearing a coat of human skin, I can imagine that one might case more a row than the other.
But hey, asking for $1k in compensation from the airline, for something like this, is about all we need to know about your rational thinking.

u/Dbzoutpost Jan 05 '26
The taxidermy is taxiing 😆
But why are we traveling with this? 🤔

We had a bunch of skunks each summer at my university — I don’t think anyone ever got skunked which is a miracle with how college kids drunkenly chase animals.

Skunks are cool when they aren't spraying you. Beautiful animals. I had a friend who knew someone with an albino skunk when she was a kid. She said the thing would stamp it's front feet when it was pissed off... 🤣

Initially a little confused before reading the comments.
...because I've met pet skunks before. (De-scented of course.) They're very cute actually and make remarkable pets. Dude said he had no end of trouble - they'd figured out how to open the fridge door. LOL
