Did I make a mistake purchasing the CosoriP103 vs CP267?

Hi there.

I am VERY new to this, so please bear with me.
This journey all started when I happened to come across a Hamilton Beach dehydrator for $16, marked as new, on a local auction site. I purchased, unboxed and found out it is in fact, very much used (yuck).

I decided to just bite the bullet and buy new from Amazon. I selected the Cosori P103. I see now that so many of you have the CP267 and I am wondering if I made a mistake in purchasing the aforementioned model. I liked that it had the temp pre-sets, although I am not sure if I will use them, and the footprint is taller, rather than wider.

We are a very active family of 4, including our Bernedoodle, so the plan is to make PLENTY of jerky, dog treats, dehydrated veggies/fruits/fruit leathers, and give everything in between a fair shot.

Any feedback would be great and I would sincerely appreciate it!

Brand new adventure!

I just picked up this second hand dehydrator and I'm obsessed! It's been going non stop the last 4 days since it arrived, and I have no idea what I'm doing?

I want easy snacks for my kids, and I also want to start to build a stock pile of emergency food.

We made some pumpkin stew last week and I have dehydrated the seeds. Same with sunflower seeds from the kids flowers this summer. I've experimented a bit with just stuff we have at home. I dehydrated onions and have them mushed into a powder for seasoning food. I have dehydrated some apple and plum and banana, just to test out if the kids like them (they do!).

Can literally anything be dehydrated? I was prepping dinner this evening and I'm looking at the broccoli in the fridge. Can broccolis be dehydrated? What about meats?

What about stock? I often have a reserve of stock frozen in the freezer, but if we have power outage that won't be use to us. Can dehydrated stock be made, how?

What about "ready meals" I'm thinking of rice or paste plus dehydrated veggies, beans etc made up into preportioned bags or tubs which can make an instant meal — "just add water"!

I'm saying all this like it's a new idea I just came up with but I'm sure it's all tried and tested. I would just love to know where to glean all this knowledge!!

I can't wait to start drying my own produce from the garden!! :)

How to dehydrate apples?

Post image
37 Upvotes

Long story short I bought a lot of apples. The one store had ambrosia apples (which are the best apples tbh) and I lost control.

How do I dehydrate these? I have a dehydrator, but do I cut them into apple slices? Can I run them on a mandolin vertically or horizontally? Do I need to remove the core before dehydrating them if i slice them vertically like that?

Thanks!!

Dehydrated pumpkin

I'm making pumpkin powder for my dogs this week from fresh pumpkins and I was wondering if anything else had run into something strange.

The first pumpkin I cooked with its skin on and everything seemed fine.

The second pumpkin I cooked after it was peeled and I swear it smells slightly of apple cider vinegar.

The two powders smell different in my opinion but since I got COVID in 2020 my sense of smell hasn't been reliable.

So does anyone have any insights?

Is a cosori food dehydrator a good budget friendly gift for my husband?

I'm looking for a cosori food dehydrator to give my husband as a gift. Hes been interested in trying to dehydrate fruits and make homemade snacks, so I thought this might be something he'd enjoy using. I'm trying to stick to a reasonable budget but still want something reliable that won't be frustrating to use. is it worth considering for a beginner, and are there any more affordable models I should compare it with? I'd really appreciate your recos. thaaaanks!

best food dehydrator for home use, are there any that aren't too noisy?

Hey y'all! I'm planning to start drying apple slices, bananas and herbs, but my kitchen is pretty close to the living room, so a loud machine running for 8 to 12 hours might get annoying. I don't mind a longer drying time if the results are good. I just want something practical for regular home use.

anyone here found a model that is reasonably quiet and still dries food evenly? I'd also appreciate hearing what temperature settings you usually use for fruit and how long a typical batch takes. Thank you people!

Canned or dehydrated ground beef?

I'm just starting my dehydrating journey and I am wondering if anyone has compared the store-bought cans of ground beef to dehydrated. Does one have better taste or texture than the other?

which top rated dehydrators model works best for mixed batches?

Im looking for a food dehydrator that can handle different things without me having to constantly rearrange everything. I'd mostly be drying apple slices, berries, peppers and sometimes mushrooms, depending on what I have in the fridge. My main concern is getting even results across all the trays, since I don't want some pieces turning crispy while others are still soft. which top rated dehydrators have worked well for you when drying different foods? I appreciate recos from people who use theirs regularly. thaankiees!

Help with drying

Hi folks, I don't have a dehydrator to dry out my mushrooms, can anyone advise me on how to go about drying them in the oven at a low temperature n how low the temperature should be, they are near enough dry but not cracker dry to put in the grinder, I did dry some by putting them in a brown paper bag next to the radiator but not really keen on doing it that way again, any help would be gratefully appreciated and TIA 🍄😉🤝

Any recos. for the best food dehydrator that is reliable and budget friendly

I am planning to get a food dehydrator for home use, mainly for drying fruits, vegetables and herbs. Im still learning about dehydrating, so I'd prefer something easy to use, reliable, and not too expensive. anyone here has tried one? which model has worked well for you over time? I'd also love to know if it dries food evenly and is easy to clean. Any suggestions or personal experiences would be really really helpful. Thanks and I appreciate you all!

Anyone have any experience with Siemens Oven food dryer?

I have a tray of funnel chanterelles I want to dry but I don’t have a dehydrator. I know several recipes say in the oven on 40°C for 24 hours or more with the door cracked.
But my oven literally has a food dryer function. I don’t know how to use it and I cannot find any instructions for it anywhere. It requires a closed door.

Autumn Olive fruit leather - the best texture I've ever gotten

Thumbnail gallery
895 Upvotes

We have an abundance of Autumn Olive berries where we live, and they're quite invasive (and tasty 😋) so we're "doing our part" for the environment by trying to eat them up.

I made fruit leather with them (boiled them down and then strained them) and it honestly is the best fruit leather we've ever made. We added only a little bit of sugar and a pinch of orange zest. The texture is just like fruit roll ups I remember having as a kid.

For those unfamiliar with Autumn Olives, they are a sweet/tangy berry with little specks of yellow on the skin which make them look glittery. They get sweeter with frost, and have a taste sort of like apples, honey, and maybe a little cranberry. They're called Autumn Olives because the tree resembles an Olive tree.

Any reliable dehydrator for beef jerky that lasts?

I'm looking for a replacement for my old one lol. I mostly use it for dried fruit and herbs, but lately I have been wanting to try making beef jerky too. I need a dehydrator that can handle regular use and has good temperature control.

is there a particular model you've used for a few years without problems? I'm curious whether stainless steel trays are worth paying attention to and how easy these machines are to clean after drying meat. Thanks yall!

Follow up: I went with the #ad Klarstein Master Jerky 16 and have been using it for dried fruit, herbs, and a few batches of beef jerky. The temperature control has been handy, and cleanup has been pretty manageable so far, so I'm happy with how it's working out.

Dehydrating whole meals

Hi, total beginner here, sorry if the question is a bit dumb...

Most of the information that I see is about dehydrating individual foods, but I'm interested in dehydrating whole meals (carbs, meat and veg) to take on multi day hiking trips. The commercial ones are very expensive, calorie poor and frankly not very tasty.

Is this a much more difficult process? Would I need a different machine than your normal dehydrator?

Thank you for the help!

Is cooked dehydrated egg yolks shelf stable?

Post image
22 Upvotes

I boiled eggs and separated the egg whites from the egg yolks. I smashed the egg yolks and dehydrated them until they were dried.

Now that they are “dehydrated,” are they considered shelf stable or are egg yolks in general not shelf stable? How long is its shelf life?

Sorry for question- am new to this

Apologies in advance for basic question.

To make dehydrated chicken treats for pets will oven work or is dehydrator better?

Have tried with oven but really have to scrub the metal grid I use.

Does dehydrator grid clean up with less scrubbing?

Looking for a recommendation for a dehydrator please

I guess I am looking for something mid-range ... it can be more expensive than the stuff at walmart. I am just dipping my toe in the water and I don't really know what to shop for yet. Advice is appreciated

Apple chips spice combos

I’m making apple chips for the first time because my Wolf River apple is finally producing well and the interwebs say it’s a great variety for chips.

I’m going to try plain and cinnamon, and I’m curious if anyone has ever tried chile powder or Tajin.

I’ve also decided not to soak in lemon juice, as this variety is already pretty tart and I’ve never enjoyed the extra sour flavor vs browning….but please feel free to (kindly) express your own opinion on this, as I still have time to change my mind. :)
