Release Notes DaVinci Resolve 21.1.1 Release Notes

130 Upvotes

DaVinci Resolve 21.1.1 has been released!

You can download the update from the support page or by going to DaVinci Resolve>Check for Updates.

Pre-Installation Notes

For DaVinci Resolve 21.1.1, BMD has taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 20.3.3. While this allows you to access the project library with 20.3.3, individual projects created or opened in 21.1.1 will no longer be accessible in 20.3.3.

BMD recommends a full project library backup as well as individual project backups (as required) before opening projects in 21.0 or later.

Reminders

Bug Reports need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official forums or contact BMD support directly if you have Studio.

Feature Requests need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official Feature Request Subforum or in the download form for Resolve.

Bug Reports and Feature Requests posted on Reddit and in this thread will not be addressed or seen by Blackmagic Design.

Notes

  • We have moved the ability to script in Python to the Studio version. The Python API was being used to hack studio features into the free version. DaVinci Resolve relies on studio license sales to pay for the engineering team. Unlike subscriptions, which have become normal but lock people's work up unless you pay monthly, we want to offer a differentiation from charging monthly license fees.
  • DaVinci Resolve and the Project Server can still work with network libraries based on PostgreSQL 13 and above.
  • Sony Camera Control on Windows needs the Sony IEDT application to be installed from the Sony website.
  • Intel Driver: With DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.2.3, AI features like Magic Mask 2, Depth Map and Super Scale show a vastly improved performance on Windows with modern Intel platforms. Users will need a compatible Intel GPU (discrete or integrated) that supports OpenVINO, and a minimum driver version of 32.0.101.8247 to leverage these improvements.
  • Rendering Immersive Projects: Improvements to edge blend in immersive projects include changes that more closely align the Resolve and visionOS previews. This will change the render for existing immersive projects.

Discussion I Finally Bought DaVinci Resolve Studio After Days of Going Back and Forth

Post image
100 Upvotes

I just wanted to share an update. After days of thinking it over, I finally pulled the trigger and purchased DaVinci Resolve Studio. It cost me a significant portion of my salary, but I'm still happy with my decision to use legitimate software and support the company.

I use Affinity for graphic design, and now I have DaVinci Resolve Studio for video editing. It feels good to support the developers behind the tools I use and love. 😊

Tutorial | English Fusion tutorial: concentric rings with a clip mapped across them

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

This tutorial is a reply to the help request posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/davinciresolve/comments/1xg6vmg/how_do_you_efficiently_integrate_text_to_an/

Since it uses a few lesser-known techniques, I thought it might be useful to more people.

The principle

There are only so many ways to make independent concentric rings. You need rings of constant width, where each ring's radius depends on a base radius and on its position in the stack. The reference is usually the outermost ring.

That leaves three approaches:

  1. Pure 2D: a set of masks and as many copies of the media, then you rotate each copy. It's a pain to animate and keep in sync.
  2. 2D/3D: start with a series of sEllipse and Extrude3D nodes, then the Ribbon3D, Replicate3D, ReplaceMaterial3D and UVMap3D combo does the rest. It's easy to follow, but Fusion handles BevelWidth inconsistently: the bevel makes the object bigger instead of cutting into its body.
  3. Almost pure 3D: you repurpose the standard 3D shapes, flattened tori and spheres, to build the elements. The result looks more organic.

I'll go with solution 3, which also uses fewer nodes.

The ring index

Each ring is a copy of a base torus. Take a Shape3D1: every copy gives you Shape3D1_1, Shape3D1_2, and so on. (In Fusion Settings → General, tick Use Simplified Copy Names to avoid ugly names like Shape3D1_1_1_1. Without it, the expression below would only return the last number.)

To get that index, use this Fusion expression, which grabs the number after the underscore:

string.match(self.Name, "_(%d+)$")

The rings

Take a first Shape3D and set it to Torus:

  • Section 0.04, for example, and Base Subdivision 100 for a smooth circle.
  • In the Transform tab, set Rotation X = 90 (or -90) to stand the ring up, untick Lock X/Y/Z, and set Scale Y to 0.1. At 0.001 the ring is as flat as it gets. Go further and it gradually turns back into a torus, which can look good too.

Copy/paste the node to get the first clone (Shape3D1_1), then enter a few expressions to compute the radius and keep the other settings linked to the model Shape3D1:

  • Radius = Shape3D1.SurfaceTorusInputs.Radius-2*string.match(self.Name, "_(%d+)$")*SurfaceTorusInputs.Section In plain terms (Fusion's 3D control names are awful): radius1 − 2 × index × section1.
  • Section = Shape3D1.SurfaceTorusInputs.Section
  • Scale Y (Transform tab) = Shape3D1.Transform3DOp.Scale.Y

The hard part is done. Now make as many copies as you like, as long as the computed radius doesn't go negative. With the default radius of 1, the limit is about Radius/(2*Section) copies. With a Section of 0.04, I stopped at 11.

The centre

For the solid centre, use a sphere whose size depends on the last ring and on the Section:

  • Radius = Shape3D1.SurfaceTorusInputs.Section+Shape3D1_11.SurfaceTorusInputs.Radius (in my case _11 is the last copy)
  • Scale Z = Shape3D1.Transform3DOp.Scale.Y

Since it's a sphere, there's no need to rotate it by 90°: the torus's Y axis is the sphere's Z axis. If you'd rather keep the same setup, rotate the sphere 90° on X and apply the thickness on Y.

Putting it all together with Replicate3D

A Replicate3D places the objects connected to its inputs on every vertex of the 3D object connected to its yellow input (Destination). We need one vertex at the centre of the rings for each shape. The simplest way is a Ribbon3D (particles work too) with:

  • Lines = 1
  • Subdivisions = number of shapes − 1 (11 in my comp)
  • Start X and End X = 0

Connect all the shapes to the Replicate3D. They come out perfectly concentric.

Cutting the hole in the clip

Next we need to cut a hole in the clip. Subtract a circle (sEllipse, Width/Height 0.5) from a sRectangle using an sBoolean, with the rectangle on the first input and the ellipse on the one to subtract, then extrude the result with an Extrude3D. Merge that Extrude3D with the Replicate3D, and adjust the Extrude3D's Scale X (4.134 here) until the hole lines up with the rings. I haven't worked out the exact relationship between sizes in Shape space and sizes in 3D space yet (I do know it for 2D/3D).

For a 16:9 composition, the rectangle is Width = 1, Height = 9/16 (0.5625).

EDIT: I looked for a more mathematical way to set the Extrude3D’s Scale so that the hole in the rectangle matches the outer circle of the rings exactly. That outer circle has a radius of 1 + 0.04 = 1.04 (torus Radius + Section), and the sEllipse has a radius of 0.25 (half its Width), so the ratio is 1.04 / 0.25 = 4.16. My by-eye value wasn’t far off. The Scale expression is:

(Shape3D1.SurfaceTorusInputs.Radius+Shape3D1.SurfaceTorusInputs.Section)/(sEllipse2.Width/2)

Remember that an sEllipse’s Width is a diameter, while a 3D radius is a radius.

Materials and UVs

Now add a ReplaceMaterial3D, with the clip as the material and the 3D composition as the scene. The clip then gets applied as a texture to every 3D shape. That's not what we want, and this is where the UVMap3D works its magic: it maps the texture across all the shapes as if they were a single object.

Given the orientation of the objects, set the Z axis in Planar mode and click Fit. If the scene changes shape over time, do the Fit on the reference frame.

Then tell the UVMap3D when the clip should look neat and tidy, since that's the whole point of the animation. I picked frame 50: tick Lock UV on Animated Object and enter 50 in RefTime.

Animation

Open the Jitter tab of the Replicate3D and change the Rotation Jitter Z: the rings spin with their texture. Pretty cool, isn't it? Since the Jitter can be keyframed (or driven by animation curves or any other modifier, but let's keep it simple), set the keyframes like this:

0 = 0, 10 = 0, 50 = 720 (2 × 360, so two full turns), 60 = 720, 100 = 0

then smooth the motion with easing in the Spline Editor.

Text

The text is easy: copy the ReplaceMaterial3D and the UVMap3D, connect a Text+ in place of the clip, and set the UVMap3D's RefTime to 0. Merge the outputs of the two UVMap3D nodes.

Finishing up

Add a DirectionalLight with Rotation X = 15 and Y = -5 (the Translation does nothing). When I do 3D motion graphics, I usually add a Camera3D set to Orthographic projection, with the Viewing Volume Size at 1.5364 to fill the frame.

Last step: connect the Renderer3D, enable Lighting and Shadows, and enjoy the result. :)

Alternative: the sEllipse + Extrude3D version

This version is easier to understand, but it forces you to work in 3D (you'll see why).

The outermost ring. Give it a Width of 0.5 and use the expression Width for Height, so the ellipse is always a circle. Choose a BorderWidth (I used 0.015 in the final comp). Connect it to an Extrude3D and use an expression to make Bevel Height equal to Bevel Width. That gives you the first bevelled 3D ring.

The other rings. Each ring's Width is the starting width minus n × 2 × the ring thickness, which in Fusion is sEllipse1.Width-2*BorderWidth*n.

The bevel trap. Counter-intuitively, adding a bevel to an Extrude3D makes the shape bigger by the same amount. You have two options: shrink the base shape, or account for the bevel in your calculations. I went with the second one, so the formula becomes:

sEllipse1.Width-2*(BorderWidth+2*Extrude3D1.BevelWidth)*n

Automating n. Editing this formula 15 or 20 times would be tedious, so we use the same trick. When you copy a node, each copy is named sEllipse1_1, sEllipse1_2, and so on, so n is the number after the underscore. For sEllipse1_1:

  • Border Width = sEllipse1.BorderWidth
  • Width = sEllipse1.Width-2*(BorderWidth+2*Extrude3D1.BevelWidth)*string.match(self.Name, "_(%d+)$")
  • Height = Width

Connect a copy of Extrude3D1 to it. The biggest part is done: copy the sEllipse1_1 / Extrude3D1_1 pair as many times as you need and the concentric circles build themselves. On the last ring, tick Solid to fill the centre.

The rest of the media. Make an instanced copy of sEllipse1 (Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+Shift+V), then de-instance Width and the Solid checkbox. For Width, enter sEllipse1.Width+4*Extrude3D1.BevelWidth and tick Solid. Subtract it from a sRectangle (Width 1, Height 9/16) using an sBoolean, then connect the result to an instanced copy of Extrude3D1. You now have a rectangle with a hole in the middle.

Joining and animating. From here it's the same as above: a Ribbon3D (Lines = 1, Start X = End X = 0, Subdivisions = number of shapes − 1) as the Replicate3D destination, the ReplaceMaterial3D with the clip, the UVMap3D (Z axis, Planar, Fit, Lock UV, RefTime), the Jitter keyframes, the text, the light and the Renderer3D.

Discussion What are some of your favorite shortcuts?

• Upvotes

I already have made a lot of costume shortcuts to make the editing process way faster. But I'm generally wondering what other people do with their shortcuts and if I'm missing something.

I'm by no means a davinci master yet. It's a topic I'm really interested in and I think others are as well, so I just wanted to ask here!

Do you guys have some shortcut commands you want to share? Where do you put your shortcuts if you costumize new ones?

Here are some of the ones I use (I also use the davinci speed editor wheel and not just mouse):

S = split Clip (cut)
Q = ripple delete, start of clip
W = ripple delete, end of clip
D = delete clip
A / Alt + Y = select all clips forward
Z / Ctrl. Z = undo
E = Normal edit mode
T = Trim mode
Alt = Select only
F = Select nearest to playhead (clip/gap)
P = Create Subclip
U = Enable / Disable Clip
V = Link/ unlink clips

1 = zoom in timeline
2 = zoom out timeline
3 = swap clips, left
4 = swap clips, right
5 = fullscreen on timeline (hit again to go back to normal)

Help | Beginner S-Log3 footage looks awful no matter how I grade it. Underexposed, or am I just doing it wrong? PLEASE HELP!

18 Upvotes

I’m grading a skate film and something is really off about the colors. Everything looks blue, colors are off and dark even after grading. I’ve watched a bunch of tutorials and followed them step by step and would really just like pointers from the community.

Footage

  • Sony A6700 + Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS
  • S-Log3 / S-Gamut3.Cine, 4K H.264 10-bit 4:2:2, 59.94p
  • ISO 800
  • White balance: auto
  • NEEWER 62mm variable ND

I’ve attached some images to show you what I’m dealing with.

Image 1: raw S-Log3

  • Darkest areas ~12–18%
  • Concrete / midtones ~33–38%
  • White shirt ~40–50%
  • Brightest highlights only ~60–65%

Image 2: same frame, CST in/out only (S-Log3 -> DaVinci Wide Gamut -> Rec.709), no grade

  • Blacks ~3–10%
  • Concrete ~30%
  • White shirt ~45–50%
  • Brightest highlights only ~72%

Image 3: my horrible attempt at grading (RGB waveform)

  • Blacks ~2–8%
  • Concrete ~38–42%
  • White shirt ~45–55%
  • Brightest highlights ~78–80%

My node setup: CST in -> Exposure -> White Balance -> Contrast -> HSV Saturation -> CST out

I’ll admit that I’m still a newbie when it comes to this stuff. I’m trying to learn. Perhaps my first mistake was keeping the ND filter on. But it was partly cloudy and I’m on an F4 lens, so most of my shots are probably underexposed.

The current image just looks dark and bright at the same time. I dont know how to explain it, but im simply not satisfied with this look. It looks awful. I don't want to continue messing around with settings aimlessly as its getting me no where. Although, in this instance it wasn't really aimless. I was following a tutorial.

If the footage is just completely messed up, I'd like if someone be up front and tell me as well. I recognize that I have a complete lack of knowledge in this, so if anyone could give me pointers on what I need to do differently, or even recommend some helpful videos, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any help!

Help How does one take out the people in the back

Just due to time, we couldn’t reshoot this but we chose to film at this abandoned lot just because of how eerie it is. In typical indie filmmaking fashion, people walked into frame and there was nothing I could’ve done about it. I’m just wondering if there’s tools in Davinci that could help me take them out? Thanks!

I have the studio version

Help Have an iPad app problem

3 Upvotes

After updating to IOS 27.2, I am now having problems importing footage. For some reason when I click import, it brings up the normal screen but it’s just a black screen. I have tried going back and also tried clicking the tabs at the bottom but still nothing. Is anyone having this problem and did you find a fix?

Discussion You may want to wait a while before you upgrade to Da Vinci Resolve 21.1.2 on a Mac.

2 Upvotes

I upgraded and now everything is as slow as molasses. My video clips take up to 2 minutes to start playing after I hit the play button. Also, my 'saving' screen graphic does not show (but updates do save), and I am unable to relink files.

My issues do not guarantee you will have issues. However, this is the first recent update I recall causing so many bugs. You may want to hold off on updating if you do not have a major reason to do so and you are in a time crunch.

I still appreciate DaVinci Resolve. This is just a helpful suggestion.

Help Help, Davinci is taking storage from my main HD despite being connecting to an external

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi so I recently switched over to Davinci Resolve but, just last weekend, I noticed a little thing that's being bothering me and idk how to fix it. So the photos are of my main HD on my mac studio and whenever I had Davinci open for a render or do a quick thing in fusion, it would seem to eat away at my main HD's storage.

However a few things

1) I have my external SSD connected to davinci, not the HD

2) whenever I closed out of davinci, the space that would being sucked away slowly comes back.

I always make sure I delete cache but I genuinely want to know if anyone else has had this issue and to know what is going on.

Tech spec:

Mac studio with the M2 Max chip

32GB memory

MacOS Sonoma 14.6

and editing is mostly done on a Samsung T5 external ssd

Help | Beginner Need advice: DaVinci Resolve Studio from Mac App Store or Blackmagic? Also looking for guidance on becoming a professional editor

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone

I'm a video editor from India, currently using an M1 MacBook Pro and DaVinci Resolve Free.

I run a small anime content brand called BERU, where I create anime edits (AMVs), cinematic videos, and storytelling content.

I'm serious about improving my editing skills and eventually turning this into a professional career.

I'm planning to purchase DaVinci Resolve Studio, mainly for Magic Mask and its advanced features, but I'm confused about which version to buy.

Current prices in India:

  • Apple Mac App Store: ₹24,900
  • Blackmagic official website: Around ₹30,656 including GST with discount only till 20 NOV

That's a difference of nearly ₹5,800!

I've heard the Mac App Store version has some limitations with third-party plugins.

I have a few questions:

  1. Is the Mac App Store version good enough for professional editing?
  2. Will plugins like Boris FX Sapphire work with the App Store version?
  3. Is paying extra for the Blackmagic activation-key version worth it?
  4. Are there any legitimate ways to purchase Studio cheaper in India?
  5. What skills should I prioritize to master both heavy AMVs and cinematic storytelling?

I'm particularly interested in learning Fusion, character masking, motion graphics, smooth transitions, compositing, and sound design.

I'm willing to invest in the software and put in the work, but I want to make the right decision before spending this much money.

I'd really appreciate any advice from experienced Resolve editors, especially people working with anime edits or motion graphics.

Thanks in advance!

0 Upvotes

I'm trying to purchase Resolve Studio, and it's telling me it's not available in my region? What does that even mean? I have regular Resolve, so why am I not able to pay for or download Studio?

Help | Beginner Why is the play-head position always displayed one hour ahead of its actual position?

6 Upvotes

Take a look at this screenshot:

The total video length is 00:58:12:02. The playhead position is *ACTUALLY* 00:57:59:02, but it *SAYS* it's at 01:57:59:02. Clearly an impossibility.

Why does it do that? How can I make it display where the playhead *ACTUALLY* is?

Help I need some help with DaVinci Resolve. I'm a complete beginner, and I have this major issue where I keep spamming nodes and my node tree gets completely messy.

Right now, I'm working on a simple motion graphics piece (an infographic with an animated circle and text following it). Because I'm new to Fusion, I don't know the proper logic yet. Every time I try to fix or animate something, I end up adding more and more nodes (like Backgrounds, Merges, etc.) instead of keeping it clean and efficient. It's getting out of hand, and my node tree looks like a total mess.

Could anyone look at my setup and give me some advice on how to optimize this? How do experienced users keep their node trees clean when doing infographics? What am I doing wrong here, and how can I simplify this whole pipeline?

Any tips, workflow advice, or best practices for beginners would be greatly appreciated! Attached is a screenshot of my current node grid. Thanks in advance!

Help | Beginner Editing a short film, how can I get this transition/effect to be smoother?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

For context, I am aiming to make it feel as though the camera moved through the glass door in the shot. I've gone about it a few ways and it still feels rough. Obviously, any crossfade isn't going to work, which my naivety led me to believe. I've also tried a "manual crossfade" by key framing the opacity as the clip plays over the other.

The clip was shot in 6k so I have the ability to crop and scale the image down to match frames better (which I've done, but not fine tuned enough, as I would use key frames to get every little bit of the frame to match for the final product).

Just looking for advice from the more experienced users rather than wasting hours guessing what may or may not work.

Help Media Offline: I need urgent help please (NOT HEVC format)

1 Upvotes

I'm doing the sound mix for a short film. Recently got the project file and footage off the director and brought it into davinci (mp4s colour graded and everything.) It's all offline, and the footage only plays in VLC media player for me, so I'm assuming its some encoding issue, with me having an AMD CPU but i don't know how to fix it and I don't want to go messing around with the files without knowing what to do in case I mess it up, the deadline is in 2 days please help me. I've already bought the 1 euro HEVC encoder thing for windows and it hasn't helped.

Here's the Metadata for one of the clips.

Windows 10

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

RAM: 32GB Dual Channel DDR4 @ 1582MHz

Help How match the color from stock footage for my James Bond spec movie trailer?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got tired of waiting for the next James Bond movie, so I made my own spec trailer. Check it out! Let me know should I make this into a full length feature fan made film? Who should play Bond? I have owned a FX3 but haven’t used it to its full potential. Intro scene was filmed on Canon C70.
Song was inspired by Skyfall from Adele. Wrote it with Gemini and composed it in Envato. edited in Final Cut Pro and colored in Davinci resolve

This is a rough cut. Be nice, shaken not stirred.

Help Importing multiple streams from one clip?

3 Upvotes

Hello.

I have several video files that have multiple streams inside them.
As far as I know, DaVinci Resolve (Studio) only reads the first stream.

But is there any way for it to read/import all the streams from the same file?

I'm basically trying to read/edit 360 files directly without having to export them from other software.
I can see the front lens video in DaVinci Resolve, but the back lens from that same file isn't imported.

Help DaVinci Resolve 21 IntelliSearch — Faster vs Better: Has anyone compared their accuracy?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've recently started experimenting with IntelliSearch in DaVinci Resolve Studio 21, mainly to help identify interesting moments in underwater scuba diving footage.

I'm using the Faster model, and while I'm impressed that it can identify and extract specific segments, I've found its visual recognition quite inconsistent.

A few examples from my testing:

Searching for "barracuda" or "school of silver fish" highlighted almost an entire clip, including sections without fish.

Searching for "yellow fins" returned 14 out of 15 clips, even though my dive buddy with yellow fins wasn't present in several of them.

Searching for "underwater scooter" returned nearly every underwater clip but missed surface footage where the diver propulsion vehicles were clearly visible.

Searching for "metal ladder" worked somewhat better, although it also matched wreckage and rocks.

All searches were performed in Visual Only mode.

I realize underwater footage is particularly challenging for AI because of visibility, colour distortion, unusual subjects and camera movement, so I'm not necessarily blaming IntelliSearch.

What I'm really curious about is the difference between Faster and Better in terms of recognition accuracy, not processing speed.

Unfortunately, I can't test Better myself because my RTX 5070 has 12 GB of VRAM, while Better requires at least 16 GB.

Has anyone here tested both models on the same footage?

I'd particularly appreciate hearing:

Does Better produce noticeably fewer false positives?

Is it better at identifying specific objects rather than matching broad visual concepts?

Does it isolate relevant segments more accurately?

Has anyone tried it with underwater footage, wildlife, sports or other challenging material?

If someone has done a direct comparison, I'd love to hear about the results or see screenshots.

I'm genuinely interested in the technology and its potential for AI-assisted rough cuts. I'd just like to understand how much improvement the Better model actually offers before considering a future GPU upgrade.

Thanks!

How Did They Do This? How do you efficiently integrate text to an effect like this?

I have a general understanding of DR, the means i use to achieve desired effects is very rudimentary and unrefined. I want to better understand the tools at my disposal. I found it monotonous duplicating the video and text, masking them, then rotating them all on a key frame respectively. I don't imagine i can avoid using duplicate video files and masks to achieve the spin on the background. What about the text?

The question ↓↓
Is there a way i can "nest" the text to the video file so i don't have to also create multiple masks and transform key frames?

The GIF is not my work, It belongs to sebastien.cordat on instagram.
