Thanks u/director__denial for picking my “crap” clue.

This week, let’s try 7 down.

Good luck!

(but more importantly, good grammar, creativity and attention to detail)

TOTW: Vive La France

Thanks to u/someguyinthefridge for picking my deceptive car clue last week.

I'm off to Paris next week so the theme is France. The best Francophilian clues, answers or surface readings will win, although I'd advise against using anything like '...the French... ' to clue le, la or les. We've all written clues using that but that is also the reason it's now predictably cliché.

I'll aim to sift through la creme de la creme on the Eurostar on Thursday.

Bon chance. It will be a riot! (Is it too soon to make that reference?)

Personal crossword app

Long time lurker, and cryptic solver here.

I built myself a personal crossword app that pulls the grids from the all major crosswords I solve (Times, Guardian, Everyman, Private Eye) and puts them in one place where I can solve them in my own time. It also cross-matches solutions against the blogs (Fifteen Squared, TftT) for the parsings.

I also built in a sync with the SNITCH, so I can see how my solve times compare with other solvers (Times Cryptic and Quick only, since the Guardian, Observer and PE don't publish solve times).

This is personal use only, on a private server, and only I can use it. I'm confident that's fair use of the published crosswords, as I'm not reproducing them publicly or selling them on.

I'm sharing this because I had a few questions for the community:

Is there appetite for something like this amongst the community? Or do people prefer to solve their crosswords on each site?

What would be a fair way to build something like this that more people could use? Or, more specifically, do you think the major crossword publishers would ever allow something like this? I'm sure there's all sorts of legal and copyright issues that I don't want to get into, but there may be a way for licensing. I'm not a lawyer so any advice appreciated.

Throw-away account for obvious reasons.
