If anyone remembers my post from last week, insurance totaled my 2020 Corolla (hit a deer 🦌 ) and it will be paid off in full. However, I loved that Corolla so much, so I couldn’t bear to part with the model.

Picked up this beauty today. Brand new 2027, LE Premium Package, all weather floor mats, OTD $24,900. Managed to snag a 3% rate. Love it to death already! Will miss my old Corolla for sure.

2010 Corolla key fob running on same battery

Post image

I think about this every once in awhile and it blows my mind, never thought to ask around. I’ve owned my 2010 Corolla since new (bought late 2009) and both key fobs still work to lock/unlock the car, without ever having changed the batteries. They’ve definitely lost some distance, but they still work. What kind of insane technology is this?!

12th Gen (18-present) MPG on non-hybrid?

I’m considering a Corolla (probably SE) non hybrid model. I sometimes see people with the gas powered version getting 40, even 50+ MPG and I’m shocked, wanting to verify this with owners. Also see the hybrid ones getting 60-70 at times. I live in MA, and aside from going to Boston here and there, I don’t really do much city driving. Lot of highway and suburb driving.

10th Gen (09-13) LHD -> RHD Instrument Cluster Swap Compatibility

• Upvotes

I'm looking at Chinese (RHD) Corolla tachometers, and I think they look way more interesting and cool than the LHD ones we got..

I'm wondering if they would be compatible, I compared the sockets and it looks about the same.. would it work?

And, the Corolla in question is a 2012 (10th Gen Facelift).

12th Gen (18-present) COROLLA Touring Sports - Active vs Executive

Post image
38 Upvotes

I own a Corolla TS 2026 in the Executive trim (the top-of-the-range model) with a 2.0-litre engine, and unfortunately, two weeks ago, someone crashed into my car, so it had to go in for repairs. During that time, the shop offered me a courtesy car. It was also a Corolla TS 2026, but with a 1.8-litre engine and in the entry-level ACTIVE trim. I had the car on loan for a week; here are my thoughts on the trim levels and whether I’d buy the top-of-the-range model again.

To begin with, the Active trim level in my country starts at €25,090, whilst the Executive starts at €34,490 (with a 2.0-litre engine).

In everyday use, I mainly noticed the difference in the engine. When driving on motorways (120–140 km/h), the difference was almost imperceptible; the performance was steady, and I had no trouble overtaking, although the higher revs meant more noise in the cabin. Problems became apparent on local roads and in town. The weaker 1.8-litre engine with 140 Nm failed to provide the same ‘confidence’ when pulling out of busy junctions or overtaking on short straights. It has often happened that I’ve been afraid to overtake a lorry on a road I know well, because I wasn’t sure whether I could do so safely; but perhaps it’s just a matter of habit.

As for fuel consumption, I had the impression that the 1.8-litre engine was less economical. Over the course of that week, I covered approximately 500 km, 40% on the motorway, 40% outside the city and 20% in the city. According to the car’s computer, the overall average fuel consumption was 5.9 l/100 km (40 mpg), whereas the same routes with the 2.0-litre engine yield an average consumption of around 5 l (47 mpg). Perhaps this is due to the larger battery fitted in the 2.0-litre model, which results in lower fuel consumption, or perhaps it’s down to different tyres.

Now, turning to the interior, the biggest disappointment was the speakers. The Executive version has an 8-speaker JBL system, which doesn’t sound all that good. I also had a RAV 4 on loan for a while, and its speakers are only slightly better than the standard ones – Toyota really missed the mark here. If you switch from another car, such as the Hyundai Kona, which has Harman Kardon speakers, you’ll want to drive the Corolla with the music turned off. During these colder months, I’ve missed having the option of heated steering wheel and seats a bit, but it’s nothing I couldn’t live without. What I really couldn’t do without, however, are the parking sensors and the blind spot monitoring system (BSM). It strikes me as downright illogical that Toyota could think such essential features don’t belong in the STANDARD specification, especially when the car costs over €25,000. Another great feature is the Nanoe-X in the air conditioning. When you’re driving past a field that’s recently been fertilised, you’ll appreciate it very quickly.

And one last thing – I suppose many people wouldn’t mind, but the car comes as standard with 16-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, which will sooner or later fall off or be stolen. Can’t Toyota fit alloy wheels as standard, or at least reduce the price?

As far as I’m concerned, the Corolla TS is a brilliant car – practical, with excellent handling – but the entry-level Active version isn’t worth the money. I’d pay extra for at least the Comfort or Style trim.

Now, as to whether I’d buy the Executive version again… Probably not; I’ve realised that most of the features are ‘nice to have’ but not essential to my daily life. I’d go for the Style version and save around €3,000. Still with the 2.0-litre engine, though – in fact, I’d love it if Toyota offered a more powerful option with at least 220k.

11th Gen (13-Present) Making a sub box for a 2016 Corolla

Post image
6 Upvotes

As the title states, today I began making a sub box for my girl's corolla. I cut a speaker plate and grill so far to fit right behind the rear seat, tight. Will update as it goes but im designing it to fit an 8" sub and 8" passive radiator so its quite a small box that hangs off the back, roughly 6" deep. I have an industrial router at work so I will be able to produce these if anyone is interested. I can also redesign to work with different speaker combos, sealed vs ported box, etc

would appreciate some assistance in finding a new replacement

Taillight indicator

I have a 2026 Toyota Corolla SE. The taillight indicator stays on even during the day time. It's a steady green light it would normally go off on its own during clear sunny days. The lights are switched to Auto, the sensor on the dashboard is not obstructed. What else can I check? I recently had it rust proofed I don't think that would have caused that issue.

12th Gen (18-present) HVAC console painting?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’ve got a 2025 Corolla SE sedan. Love it. But the glossy HVAC panel always annoys me because it collects more dust than an exercise bike used strictly as an expensive coat rack. I was thinking of removing it and painting it a flat color. Obviously not the part that has information showing on the screen. Has anyone does this before?

12th Gen (18-present) Accidentally used Slightly thinner oil. How urgently should I change it?

Just changed my oil using W0-16 instead of W0-20 for my 2022 LE model non-hybrid (I believe it should be 1.8L). When I was looking it up i didn't see that it was specifying for hybrid models specifically for the W0-16. I typically use W0-20 but i wasn't thinking too deeply when I was picking it up this time while reading the Toyota's website documentation.

How severe would it be to drive it until the next oil change cycle or maybe even sooner? I'm trying to gauge if it would really damage the engine or not. Additionally, if i should change it immediately should I also grab a new filter? I hear the thinner oil can cause some damages.

Can a mechanic tell me what this scratching is? It does it when it's cold out. There's also a squeak that happens sometimes I know that's my belt.

Definitely not as bad as it could’ve been, little guy was in the middle of the interstate, and I had no way to safely get over and somebody was actively trying to pass me on the shoulder and then somebody else was in the other lane so I just had to try to swerve the best I could.

I had no idea that when I got out of my car, I would actually have a dent this bad… I’m just glad he did not go directly underneath my car or we might be having a different conversation right now.

If anyone’s curious, I was quoted $1409 for repairs at Gerber collision, but it’s covered by my insurance 😌

Familiar with this combo of lights?

Post image

Hello!
I do not know much about cars however I have a 2016 Toyota Corolla. I’ve had it for about a year now with zero hiccups. Today I went to put it in drive and the engine would not turn over and these lights were displayed on the dash. I also noticed my gas tank was open which is VERY strange. We attempted a jump but it will not work. I will be going to a mechanic but if anyone has any ideas that would be amazing! For reference it’s the steering wheel light and the check engine light.

10th Gen (09-13) Does anybody know a good video that shows what a lot of common sounds on the 10th Gen Corolla sounded like when they were new? A showcase maybe?

One of the little annoying parts about buying an older vehicle that you're trying to clean up is the fact it can be hard to tell what sounds are signs of wear and what sounds are just how it sounded even when it left the factory. Things like the idle sound of the engine when warm, doors closing, window motors, general road noise whilst driving, things like that.

With a 'cheap' car like a Corolla it's kinda hard for me to tell if stuff like the hollow thud of closing the trunk is normal. Or if that faint tick of the engine is normal for a DOHC or is it a sign of chain or valve issues. Or if my window motors really did sound that anemic from the factory.

Any help finding a good video or collection of videos would be astronomical helpful!

Added Diode Dynamics SS3 Max fog lights. Because of the Corolla Hybrid's active grille shutter, there was no room behind the grille, so I had to install them in front of it. These are lights are SAE compliant fog light pattern. They are not spot light pods.
