I hate that I never has able to bonding with other men like that. If someone would give me this ironic "compliment" my first reaction would be very hurt and give a nervous laugh after I rationalize that can't be express sadness because I can't be seem as weak.

Problem is, we all have these insecurities that friendly jokes like this might accidentally affirm. So it’s hard to know anybody’s tolerance level until you do.

And too many people can dish it out but not take it.

You have to be friends with someone a good bit to make jokes like that so you know where the line is. Like I'll call my one friend fat as a joke, but not my friend who is insecure about his weight.

I don't know I feel kinda uncomfortable if another guy won't insult me at all, would come across as him having pitty on me. Sure I can take compliments but some friendly banter is just as important to me

If you don't know him that well, it isn't really possible to know what will be friendly banter and what will hit on an unknown insecurity and be genuinely hurtful.

Assuming that someone must pity you if they don't try to verbally hurt you seems like its own issue that may have been created, at least partly, by men insulting each other. That sounds less like a healthy system and more like someone who's gotten used to a chaotic environment to the point that a calm one feels wrong.

Exactly! Insults like this are the modern day "test of strength" among men. It's a sign of respect and a test all in one. If someone can't give or take a casual insult like this, I feel less inclined to trust them.

You don’t have to put all that pressure on yourself man, you can define manliness however you want. I’m a dude and it makes me sad to see other guys get down on themselves for stuff like this, you’re allowed to have feelings

This. Realistically speaking, I think most male friend groups would comfort their friend if he was crying. If they don't and just start giving him a hard time over it, you're in a toxic group and need to find better friends.

Tough men are strong enough to cry, and even tougher men create a space where others feel comfortable crying. Only sissies fear their own feelings. You scared of your poop? If course not, it's a natural thing that happens. Same with tears, there's no logical reason why taking an eye dump should be harder than taking a regular dump. Don't get eye constipated. Let it out dude. It's good for you.

Some men. For many this isn't the experience.

Yah a lot of the men I know hate this crap. They never know when a "joke" hits to close to home and an environment has been created where they can't express that hurt without the potential for ridicule or killing the "vibe". It often becomes a means of avoiding actual communication and emotional connection and creates a feedback loop.

‘Men never get compliments’ is what I heard.

What a way to find out I’m a woman. I’m too addicted to having pockets for this.

Been awhile since I checked in on Fowl Language. Has the quality really sunk this low?
