Putting State and Ole Miss back to back is just asking for a fight

Particularly since their titles rolled off of the metrics they’re considering while ours is still on.
Edit: Damn y’all can’t take even the slightest of banter

Who the hell would’ve thought WVU would be a top 15 collegiate baseball program nationally a decade ago?
14
u/jalapeno_nips 12d ago
We’re a baseball school. I don’t know of any other sports
9
u/CevapiEnthusiast 12d ago
Baseball, Rifle and Soccer.
I’m not aware of any other competitions put on by the NCAA.

Women’s basketball was pretty good last year too. Even if we fell to Kentucky. B12 tourney champ was great

It’s awesome honestly, it’s crazy the turnaround the program has had on 10 years

Georgia has one good year every 15 years or so. not good enough to be where they are here.

Between Florida State (8), North Carolina(3) and Arkansas (6) we have 49 CWS appearances and 8 runner ups.
17
u/Murky_Breath3944 12d ago
So what you’re saying is that we’re all the best at not winning it all? Yea!!!
10
u/FloggingJonna 12d ago
Only comes up constantly when we’re around.
8
u/geaux4_gold 11d ago
Meanwhile, LSU and Texas combined have 59 appearances, 14 titles, and 7 runner ups.
6
u/Murky_Breath3944 11d ago
Ok, this isn’t the place for you. This is for the best losers, not the best winners. UNC, FSU, and Arkansas are the three best at losing in the CWS, so take your shiny hardware and let us feel good about being worthy opponents that never win 😭.
4
u/Training_Swan3552 11d ago
And what’s more impressive than that? LSU only has 20 of those 59 appearances but still has 8 of the 14 titles.
God bless you Skip Bertman!!!
Greatest college baseball coach ever. At least in terms of success this cannot be rationally debated.

My nephew is a freshman on the team this year, and I'm so excited to watch! Do freshmen on this team typically redshirt their first year?
4
u/StateDawg78 12d ago
Redshirting is no longer a thing. All athletes now get 5 years to play 5 seasons.

Cal State Fullerton really has dropped off the map.
The landscape has changed drastically.
7
u/Training_Swan3552 11d ago
This makes me sad. I got into college baseball in the 80s and became a baseball nut in the 90s when I attended LSU. But Fullerton, Wichita and Pepperdine were my favorite teams outside of Baton Rouge. They weren’t hitting 120 home runs every year, but the defensive play and pitching were second to none. They played “real” baseball. The kind of baseball you teach your kid to play. Fundamentals will almost always win. (See 2026 Brewers)
1
u/Awatts2222 11d ago
Well--at least LSU should be a real contender for the foreseeable future. LSU has a good thing going. I remember back in '88 when CSUF went down to LSU and beat them. And, believe it or not, Fullerton had a D1 football team and they actually played LSU that year along with Florida. It was not pretty. lol The football program ended in '92.
Also lived in Sulphur, Louisiana back in the day and kind of followed LSU and McNeese.
Geaux Tigers!

Rice--another mid major baseball powerhouse of yesteryear.
03' and '04 CWS champions respectively. We will always have Omaha. lol

I don't understand the criteria here. If it is long term view there shouldn't be so much variance, if it isn't idk why some teams didn't move more.

Even with Oklahoma having the latest title, #7 is kinda crazy. Does anybody really have them as a better program than Oregon State, Miss State (ewww), and Ole Miss?
6
11
u/cbbutle 12d ago
They have 5 more CWS appearances than ole Miss and one less than MSU
5
u/Objection_Irrelevant 12d ago
D1 doesn’t rank these historically but rather their current status and projecting forward. They say “For the purpose of this exercise, we don’t care what happened in the 1970s or 80s, or even the 90s or 2000s — that’s ancient history to a potential recruit in 2024.” (NOTE: they’ve got a copy/paste error there as that’s clearly just pulled from when they last did this in 2024.)
6
u/dover1129 12d ago
Is not all time. It just the best programs now.
5
u/Objection_Irrelevant 12d ago
I’m aware. I still don’t have them above the three I mentioned at a minimum.
1
u/Lebojr 11d ago
So the real answer to your questing is in the way people come up with these rankings in the off season. Here is the recipe: (and it goes for all college sports)
Take the previous season final rankings
Use the top 8-10 traditional powerhouses and 2-3 of the surprise teams that finished high.
Make your top 12 from that.
If really bold, throw in one unexpected name that made a great coaching hire in the off season.
Take any other team who made the regionals and make them the next next 52 teams.
Randomly place any other team you wish below those 64.
There is no actual evaluation of what a school will put on the field in the coming season.
So Oklahoma being where they are just shows they had a great season. So did yall. So did we. But the rest are as random as the balls in the power ball each Tuesday and Saturday.

u/RedDirtSport_ 12d ago
We have the 3rd best program history in the SEC behind Texas and LSU.
7
9
u/Objection_Irrelevant 12d ago
Cool. That’s not what this is. And LOL no you don’t anyway. A number of CWS appearances during the prior formats where it was far easier for teams in some districts than others to make it doesn’t really matter.
7
u/lowes18 12d ago
The amount of programs that you can legitimately say have a great history in the sport can practically be counted on one hand lol.
I feel like way too many people just now getting into the sport just look at the program wikipedia boxes
6
u/Objection_Irrelevant 12d ago
Hell into the 70s and even the 80s, a number of SEC schools would use the baseball team (and other spring sports) as a way to keep some of their football players in shape because the SEC had more strict offseason workouts rules than other conferences. But if they played baseball then hey it’s in season for that sport.

u/RedDirtSport_ 11d ago
Except we do and it does. Historically

u/Objection_Irrelevant 11d ago
Oklahoma is maybe the 10th best SEC program. I honestly was pretty embarrassed for y’all in 2022 when fewer than 1,000 fans showed up the national championship series. It certainly made the it easy on the Ole Miss crowd to completely wreck your players’ mentally. It was fun to watch.

Heels are mashing in pre season but now starting pitching is a concern… we can never have both!
10
u/ShotNixon 12d ago
In my experience, whenever pitching is a concern for UNC, some scrub we’ve never heard of goes 12-2 with a 2.13 era and UNC ends up just fine. Watch Cameron Seagraves ball out this season out of nowhere.
6
u/Murky_Breath3944 12d ago
Why are you concerned? Have you seen our pitching lineup? It’s deeper than it was last year.
5
1
u/HesNotHere_17 12d ago
I’ve been to all of the scrimmages and the Fall World Series, and I can promise you that if we stay healthy, this pitching staff will be better than last year’s. Staying healthy is key though.
1
u/archerdj0723 11d ago
Voorhies and Osbolt Saturday/Sunday? Boaz is who he is and no one has experience outside of Glauber. I like Rose but he was shaky when we saw him last.
5
u/SouthernWino 12d ago
Now my Golden Eagles need to get back to Omaha. Winning the whole thing may not be realistic, but getting to Omaha sure feels like a possibility.

Texas jumps 7 spots purely out of conference affiliation? It’s resume has always been basically the best. Don’t really get what changed in the last two years besides number of new conference games. I’d argue we’ve maybe been worse under schloss than we were under pierce

ND is the one of the worst jobs considering our AD cut scholarships and TV broadcasts. Fucking Arkansas Pine Bluff shows all their games on TV but poor little ND can’t.

On the one hand, it’s really quite sad how far ASU has fallen since 2010. I’m desperate for us to get back to relevancy.
On the other, my main flair didn’t even make the list. So cheers to that.
