I guess OP means the cpu cores of the server are "burning" but that makes it sound like they're being used up. They're just under regular operation
22
u/Sh4rp27 27d ago
Burning meaning money, paying for server space/additional layers just to accommodate afk players. Since layers are just new isolated network server instances that get spun up/down as needed.
1
u/bigpunk157 27d ago
iirc, when you have the <away> status in these games, you stop sending update packets for afk time and the server has nothing to receive until you send the status update for the server to give you listening space again. I'd have to double check this in wireshark to be sure. This is just something I remembered from helping one of the private server owners a long time ago.

u/Oedipus_TyrantLizard 27d ago
I mean.. the syntax might be wrong… but it’s true that you have more cores serving traffic when players are logged in vs logged out lol.
Though I’d argue it’s more nodes & networking… since hosting is not CPU alone lol.

I see this user on like every twitter post about WoW: Forever. He claims to be a retail player that just took an interest in Classic, but then dunks on retail stuff constantly. He also wants the classic feel back but reads like a minmaxxer. I’ve just written him off as a troll that wants to flame blizzard. He’s literally everywhere.

or because the timer on it is stupid because it redoes the buffs anyways so there is no downside to having it where i keep sitting at a campfire and it rebuffs me with he current stuff at it every minute I choose to sit at it.
7
u/ButtonedEye41 27d ago
This feels likes someone just looking for a gotcha.
Lets see first if people actually play like that. If they do, then just make countdown with logoff or nerf it so that it only tops up your rested xp.
The latter option meaning that if it gives 10% of a level (no clue how much it actually is) then it only ever tops you up to that 10% value. So if you have 3%, it puts you up to 10% rested (gain of 7%). If you have 15% then no bonus (but also no debuff).
But if people dont play like this, then its fine?
2
u/StrikeRaid246 27d ago
He’s in the comments of every damn wow post on Twitter trying to get a gotcha and taking different sides every time he posts lol.

2
u/Substantial_Trust812 27d ago
i think it works like this(not sure) but i think it gives you up to 5% rested xp, so if you have more then that, you wont get any. In that case, its ok to me, since if you have more then 5% xp and it doesnt stack, there would be an incentive to use this while you leveled, as you get 8 hours worth of rested xp just from sitting still for a minute before you contine to play.
if it doesnt work like that, i think they should change it to that, and if you have rested xp from before, you wont get the debuff
29
u/yksvaan 28d ago
I'm pretty tired of the meta clowns. They are like weaker class buffs, nice to have but in no way necessary to play. Something like +5% xp is wasted by the time spent managing buffs instead of being out there playing the game.
"afk 10 mins to get buff", "logout for 5 to save buff" while going to rfc
4
u/ademayor 27d ago
It’s the same as always, players started optimising the fun out of the game already.
1
u/redditsuxandsodoyou 27d ago
they arent even optimising the fun out, they are just being stupid.
optimisation makes sense when it benefits you, intentionally fucking around at the inn is not gonna get you to 60 faster, you have to force yourself to not log out so either you are getting some kind of software to stay logged in (against tos btw) or you are GOING BACK TO YOUR PC TO CANCEL AFK, both of these are not 'saving time' because you're still engaging with the fucking game to optimise the tiniest sliver of blue xp bar, which over an entire 1-60 levelling cycle is probably gonna save you maybe 5 fucking minutes. this isn't optimisation, it's larping as an optimiser.

Breaking news: Other people enjoy playing the game differently to you. For some reason this confuses and annoys you.
4
u/DeathToAzralon 27d ago
I think it is mathematically better to just keep moving and playing than to stop for campfire buffs. They can be quite strong but is it really making a difference when you already dumpster mobs your level anyway? Most of what impacts leveling speed is just travel time and efficient routing
17
u/sirgreyface69 27d ago
Relax on the math buddy. Getting buffed up feels satisfying and while i sit at a fire, i can take a piss and grab some food irl
→ More replies (3)1
u/staplepies 27d ago
One minute for ~5% of a level is way faster than even speed running pace once you pass the first few levels.
2
u/Bwadark 28d ago
Honestly... I don't understand this debuff. Why can't I refresh it? If I sit at a campfire in the town before I go questing, but find a camp fire out in the wild with more appropriate buffs and people there! Why shouldn't I be able to override the first one?
4
u/ricktoyourmorty 27d ago
This debuff is specifically for leatherworker's "Camp Tent" which gives 5% rested XP. You can still sit at a camp and get other buffs while you have this debuff. However, you cannot benefit from the "Camp Tent" again until this debuff expires.
1
u/GreatBandito 27d ago
I agree. You should just be able to keep sitting at them and resetting the buff. Having the timer just adds to feel bad moments where right after you are done someone finally adds the 3rd buff you are waiting for
-1
u/loopuleasa 28d ago
you misunderstand
the debuff is like "Weakened Soul" for power word shield
2
u/Bwadark 27d ago
Do I? This debuff prevents you from getting a campfire buff.
I don't understand it's purpose.

Wow players: we want the classic feel back. also wow players: Iz blizz ztupid they didn't even account for the degen meta maxxing
just play the game you nerds and try not to get your panties twisted over everything
5
u/Zavodskoy 27d ago
This community wants to desperately preserve the classic experience because levelling is part of the journey and very important that blizzard doesn't speed up questing speeds
But they also want to be able to just run dungeons all the way to level 60 and never actually quest throughout the world, they want to do dungeons with an entire level of rested XP and 4 world buffs active

It's always the developers responsibility to ensure people aren't encouraged to engage with the game in unfun ways. People will always do what they see as optimal everything else is roleplay
7
u/DeltaT37 28d ago
its the same amount of fun for people to stay logged in or to log out lol. 99% of people will not notice or care about this.

If you're choosing to play the game 5% of a rested bar at a time with an hour break between, that is entirely on you.
-1
u/DonPhelippe 27d ago
The unfortunate truth still rears its ugly head: everyone and their dog knows that the "min maxxing" effect exists because the game is an elaborate casino in terms of player power progression. The journey of the player is highly dependent on RNG on every step, with no way to mitigate it, no way to "force" it - essentially masses of people with no agency and with no control over their fate.
Of course they will clutch at straws and claw as hard as they can to even get a bit of control back.
17
u/RikkuEcRud 27d ago
Okay, the debuff doesn't tick doesn't while you're offline. But the buff also doesn't tick down while you're offline. The buff and debuff are working on the same timeline, so what is really being requested here is "Blizzard, please make us re-buff more often."
12
u/Impressive_Net_116 27d ago
The debuff isn't for reupping the buff, it's for reupping the Tent which gives Rested.
5
4
u/dandiestpoof 27d ago
Doesn't this campfire debuff also stop you from getting a new buff even if the new campfire has more buff items dropped?
3
u/Montegomerylol 27d ago
The only thing it blocks is the Camp Tent buff, which gives a bar of rest. You can refresh or switch out all the other campfire buffs all you want.
2
u/dandiestpoof 26d ago
I thought that also until 2 days ago when no matter what I did or what buffs were available in the new fire it would NOT refresh at all. It refreshed the first try after the debuff fell off though, not sure if they're tweaking it or if it was a bug but I'll probably report it today.
19
u/DuggerX 28d ago
People literally can't read apparently, even the OP...this 5% rested xp buff can't exceed 5% so staying logged in doing nothing, does nothing, WOW. Its only useful as a slight boost before you kill your next few mobs. Its great for an extra 5% before logging out and collecting another 5% (per 8hrs) before you play the next day then after an hour of gaming you can get another 5% from the camp because you can't get the 5% if you have over 5% already.
3
u/kabushko 28d ago
The real meta is to grab tent buff, afk in an inn for 50 minutes, quest for 10 minutes, and then repeat. Rested xp the whole way and you can get some work or whatever done in those 50 minutes
11
-1
u/Wooden-Gur3537 28d ago
Correct. If you work from home you could level slowly by just playing for 10 minutes every hour.

You also remove that kind of debuff by being logged off in an inn or major city for 8 hours without any interruption, I tested it.

3
u/grapefoundry 28d ago
Feels like it'd make more sense to be able to camp as many times as you like just each time you camp it replaces the previous camp buffs. Don't know why you should have to wait an hour to recamp
2
u/Hopelesscumrag 27d ago
thats literally how it works op is a moron and thinks that the 5% tent buff means he cant get ANY camp fire buffs

What the fuck is a server core? Sincerely a software engineer 20 years in the industry.

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 27d ago
Infra engineer here… kinda weird how many supposed IT professionals and engineers are commenting and don’t know what a CPU core is or that they’re clearly referring to keeping more of them active than they otherwise would.
I don’t necessarily agree with their point, especially as unless they changed it the debuff DOES go away after I think 8 hours logged out (it’s disappeared for me overnight every time).
Obviously the comment is made by someone not super IT savvy but it’s also not exactly difficult to understand the point they’re trying to make. More people logged on equals more resources being used that don’t need to be.
5
u/SusPatrick 27d ago
Alex... burning server cores is no laughing matter. Once they get too hot, the threads unravel, all the bytes start to fall out and it's just a goddamn mess.

CPUs are divided into sub-CPUs called cores. He is saying that by Blizzard unintentionally encouraging people to idle to get their rest debuff removed, they are wasting server resources by having to service their connections. It is true though that his criticism is worded poorly and he probably doesn't even actually believe that he knows what he's talking about.
