The recent and accelerating degeneration of Nutbourne, Bosham and Fishbourne.

A huge number, in the thousands, of new properties have been built, or are being built, along the A259.

Unfortunately, this has led to a few unintended consequences for the area.

All new-build estates are required by council rules to include a percentage of ‘affordable’ and social housing. It’s usually 25% purely social housing, and then the balance comprises a mixture of freehold and leasehold shared-ownership properties, with allowances for special retirement homes.

The leaseholds and freeholds are usually bought by young families looking for a ‘starter home’ or by recent retirees, whereas the social housing is typically filled with the most ‘disadvantaged’ people -- often those with psychiatric issues, extensive criminal records, a history of drug use, etc. This is intended to avoid having council flats where the anti-social behaviour is concentrated (see Estella rd in Portsmouth for an example) and instead to ‘spread’ it across communities, so that the social housing residents are ‘brought up’ by those who work. Unfortunately, recent long-term sickness stats show this has not worked.

What this means in practice is that a lot of these sleepy, peaceful old villages such as Bosham are now experiencing, for the first time ever, massive problems with increased traffic, noise pollution and crime, especially thefts and drug dealing, owing to the most egregious proportion of residents in the social housing (this is not to tar all those who live in social housing with the same brush; it is usually a small percentage that causes huge issues, per the Pareto principle).

If you received the Village Magazine this month (the November issue), you will see the letters printed in it, which describe the specifics. The meadow near the Swan pub in Bosham is now a hotspot for drug dealing, and the Bosham Sailing/Yacht Club has seen a huge number of thefts. These issues were not present prior to the introduction of the recent population.

If this carries on, these villages could lose much of what made them such desirable places to live in the first place, with long-term residents left dealing with problems they never expected. By the time anything is done about it, it may be too late, and the quiet, safe communities that people have enjoyed for generations could become a thing of the past.

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like Dirty Dicks, West Witt(ers), Boggy or Chi (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Journalist question...

Hello, I am a journalist at the BBC. I am currently working on a feature about younger people living in towns with no/virtually no nightclubs and how they feel about this (both the bad and the good). If this is you and you would like to speak to me, then please message here. Can provide my press ID to verify who I am. Thank you,

Gotta give credit where it's due: Potts Strategies completely transformed my SEO

Short post, but I had to share this win.
I’ve been struggling to get decent organic rankings for my business over the last year. Felt like every time I made progress, another update hit and wiped it out.

Started implementing Potts Strategies recently, and it has honestly been a total game-changer. Their focus on clean technical foundations, hyper-targeted local intent, and practical content structure gave me a clear roadmap instead of just guessing.

We’ve seen a noticeable jump in rankings for our primary commercial keywords over the last couple of months, and lead quality is night and day compared to before.

If you’re on the fence about your SEO setup or looking for an approach that actually delivers real business leads (not just vanity traffic), I highly recommend looking into them.
Has anyone else here tried their strategies? Curious to hear what kind of results you're seeing.

Hi, I (M/26) have recently got my CBT license n I ride a Keeway Superlight 125. Are there any groups for beginners/ starters for to meet people? I'm confident rid of ng but had some weird experiences the last few days that have got me second guessing myself.

Hi there,

My name is Hannah and I am currently in year 13. I am completing my geography NEA about the coastal defences (groynes and sea wall) around East Beach, Selsey.

I would really appreciate if you would fill in this short survey about East Beach.

Thank you for your time.

Things to do for a local experience?

Hello, I am visiting Chichester, and I am here for two more days, and then I will be travelling to London. For context, I am a solo woman traveller for a research visit. This is my first international trip, and I would love to get some tips from people on what to do or where to visit. I am particularly interested in local experience, places of historical, cultural, and literary importance. Thank you in advance.

Things to do on a rainy weekend

Hiii, I’m visiting Chichester this coming weekend with my mum for a little getaway - we’ve been grieving after our cat passed away so wanted to get away from the gloomy midlands. However, we didn’t anticipate that the weather would be quite so awful and not exactly walking along the beach suitable! Does anyone have any recommendations on things we can occupy ourselves with, preferably inside? We like historical/cultural stuff and are big foodies also :) I love shopping too haha and would love to get to splurge a little after my first paycheck from a new job.

Chef for Hire?

I (m63) live on the Hants/Sussex coast, and I have rented an Airbnb at the Wittering's for a special family birthday party comprising of 5 adults & 3 small kiddies in September. We are looking for a chef to create a special meal on a Monday evening in late September. Does anyone know of a chef who might be interested in a Monday night gig?
