Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is chemical engineering? What is the difference between chemical engineers and chemists?

In short: chemists develop syntheses and chemical engineers work on scaling these processes up or maintaining existing scaled-up operations.

Here are some threads that give bulkier answers:

What is a typical day/week like for a chemical engineer?

Hard to say. There's such a variety of roles that a chemical engineer can fill. For example, a cheme can be a project engineer, process design engineer, process operations engineer, technical specialist, academic, lab worker, or six sigma engineer. Here's some samples:

How can I become a chemical engineer?

For a high school student

For a college student

If you've already got your Bachelor's degree, you can become a ChemE by getting a Masters or PhD in chemical engineering. This is quite common for Chemistry majors. Check out Making the Jump to ChemEng from Chemistry.

I want to get into the _______ industry. How can I do that?

Should I take the professional engineering (F.E./P.E.) license tests?

What should I minor in/focus in?"

What programming language should I learn to compliment my ChemE degree?

Getting a Job

First of all, keep in mind that the primary purpose of this sub is not job searches. It is a place to discuss the discipline of chemical engineering. There are others more qualified than us to answer job search questions. Go to the blogosphere first. Use the Reddit search function. No, use Google to search Reddit. For example, 'site:reddit.com/r/chemicalengineering low gpa'.

Good place to apply for jobs? from /u/EatingSteak

For a college student

For a graduate

For a graduate with a low GPA

For a graduate with no internships

How can I get an internship or co-op?

How should I prepare for interviews?

What types of interview questions do people ask in interviews?

Research

I'm interested in research. What are some options, and how can I begin?

Higher Education

Note: The advice in the threads in this section focuses on grad school in the US. In the UK, a MSc degree is of more practical value for a ChemE than a Masters degree in the US.

Networking

Should I have a LinkedIn profile?

Should I go to a career fair/expo?

TL;DR: Yes. Also, when you talk to a recruiter, get their card, and email them later thanking them for their time and how much you enjoyed the conversation. Follow up. So few do. So few.

The Resume

What should I put on my resume and how should I format it?

First thing you can do is post your resume on our monthly resume sticky thread. Ask for feedback. If you post early in the month, you're more likely to get feedback.

Finally, a little perspective on the setting your expectations for the field.

Salary 2026 Chemical Engineering Compensation Report (USA)

The 2026 Chemical Engineering Compensation Report is now available - the link to the full report below. There is a PDF version of it there also. Many thanks to the 1,947 people who submitted their data this year - if you supported my effort, you should have received an email (or LinkedIn message if your email bounced back) last week with access to the report.

This year I was able to incorporate some dashboards into the report, which will allow people to explore the data, in a limited way, for themselves and I'm really excited about this! This is moving in the direction of where I eventually want to see this all go.

This subreddit has been extremely supportive of what I've doing and I'm so grateful for all of you!

Career Advice For those that became project managers, how did you handle working with EE, CE and ME when the ChemE doesn’t overlap with those groups as much ?

I heard some project manages can have a hard time working with engineers on project when they aren’t versed in civil, mechanical etc

How do you solve issues between groups without having the technical knowledge ?

Software 3 phase separator- Aspen HYSYS

• Upvotes

Hi everyone
I have a feed mixture of gases, hydrocarbons, and water that goes to a 3 phase separator. In all 3 outlets there are water in them. Is there a way to remove all water from vapour and light liquid streams and keep it in the heavy liquid stream only? I tried changing the temperature and pressure of the inlet stream and changing the fluid package but nothing worked, there's always some water in the vapour and light liquid

Job Search ChemE Undergrad w/3 internships struggling to find a post-graduation job

Hey everyone,

I’m wondering if there’s anyone out there experiencing what I am (or similar). For context: I’ve had 3 internships during my undergrad. One was a 2 year (more like co-op) experience at an Oil&Gas exploration company & then I’ve had two traditional summer internships for some of the biggest names in the Nuclear industry.

At all of my internships, I’ve performed well, received great feedback, & have built lots of (in my opinion, highly transferable) skills. My GPA remains high (3.85) & all of these opportunities came relatively easy. It wasn’t like I was mass-applying or mass-networking: I sent in 1-2 applications per hiring cycle & was blessed to have the offer come my way upon interviewing well.

Maybe I’ve been spoiled, but I didn’t imagine how difficult landing my first job has been. Since September, I’ve probably applied to around 40 listings that my résumé is well suited for, but I’ve only gotten 2 screening interviews & nothing past that. I’ve also done a few informational interviews with the person voluntarily passing my credentials on to the hiring team internally.

I understand that things are rough right now for most, but I’m wondering if there’s anyone else out there who has had success in the internship realm, but is facing a brick wall on the full-time job hunt.

Edit: I should clarify that I am still in my senior year. Also, my prior internships all brought on tons of interns but then had no “bandwidth” to bring any of them on full-time.

Career Advice Gyratory Crusher 3D modeling for mining industry : important for chemical engineers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

for advice learn 3d modeling , hey guys , im a chemical engineer , i spent the last week creating a 3D model for a gyratory Roks crusher for mining industry SO How it works:

ore up to 1.1 m is dumped in at the top. Under the mantle, an eccentric turns at 137 rpm, so the mantle gyrates and the gap opens and closes more than twice a second. Every time it closes, the rock is squeezed against the manganese concaves and breaks, until it falls out at about 17 cm.

For modeling and rendering i used Blender 5.1 LTS

Career Advice Chemical Engineering Career Advice

Hey! I graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 2018 and obtained my EIT certification in 2024. I have less than a year of experience working as a chemical engineer. I’m currently serving in the Army as a biomedical equipment technician, and I don’t have much time left on my contract. I was wondering if there are any courses, certifications, or training opportunities I could pursue while I’m still serving in the Army to improve my chances of getting a job as a chemical engineer once I transition out of the military.

Troubleshooting URGENT - How to perform pressure loss test correctly!

So I need super fast help, please!

I want to procure a chinese ozone generator but crucial data is missing but the workers there are willing to test it for me. Most important is testing, how much pressure loss occurs through their oxygen-fed ozone generator. I tried to give them instructions but I am a psychologist.

I have told them to take an oxygen source and dial in 0.6 bar (because thats the input pressure we want to examine), lead it through a flow meter, into the generator, out of the output, to which a T piece is connected, with a second pressure gauge connected to the side branch and the other one has the oxygen/ozone mix freely blowing into the room.

Now they reported that they always measure 0 bar at the output no matter what. I have given them wrong instructions apparently. The reason for the failure to read seems to be that the pressure escapes into the room before it can be measured.

Please provide the correct instructions for them to measure the pressure loss/resistance of their device - it should be measured using 5 and 10 liters/min.

Are there any additional measurements that are needed or helpful?

Thank you

PS: I didnt want to keep them waiting so I told them to add a needle valve/ bleed valve and to open it slightly and then readjust the pressure/flow. I have attached this drawing. Is that correct?

Student Intro to Biochem or Advanced Biochem 2 semester sequence?

So I'm a premed but I am thinking of pivoting into something pharma related. I wanted to take Advanced Biochem 1 but the timing conflicts with Thermo 2. So my options are to either take Intro Biochem this semester or wait for the fall and take the start the advanced sequence. The difference is that intro goes less in-depth but is one semester and focuses highly on MCAT material. Advanced goes more in depth, is more challenging, is 2 semesters, and you are expected to do a ton of projects for it. If I was exclusively focused on premed Id do Intro without a 2nd thought since I'd be taking my MCAT around early 2028 but I'm thinking of pivoting to either an industry role right out of college or a PhD. So I was wondering if the rigor of my biochemistry class matters or if I'd be fine to just take Intro this next semester. (I'm a sophomore btw)

Career Advice Internship Advice

So I recently landed an internship with a really big oil and gas company for summer 2027. This company specializes mostly in the midstream transportation and processing of oil and gas.

Honestly, I was completely shocked by the offer letter. $45 per hour, FOR AN INTERNSHIP. 6k grossed up as a living stipend just for the summer. and then just on top of that, all the people I’ve talked to at the job genuinely seem like they love the company and their work. And the location I’d be working isn’t in the middle of no where either.

Anyway, enough about how lucky and blessed I am. Cuz I know how fortunate I am.

I really want to convert this internship to a full time opportunity with this company. Their internship program is intended to be a pipeline to full time employment, but especially for this company, that seems to be even more so true.

I don’t know that much about the oil and gas industry, and I want to make it my mission between now and may 2027 to learn as much as I possibly can to be as prepared as possible, and give myself the best chance of full time employment afterwards.

Anyone out there who works in a similar sector who can recommend any resources for me to learn from? Any skills you might recommend I learn in the next 7 months until my internship? I have access to a lot of engineering design softwares at my school, but not hisys, or pipeview.

Career Advice Final-year Chem Eng student from Nepal looking for funded grad programs in plant design and techno-enviro-economic analysis. Which types of programs or labs should I look at?

Hi everyone, I'm a final-year Chemical Engineering student in Nepal, graduating December 2026. I have a granted design patent, a Q1 co-authored paper, a conference-series paper and two conference posters. My CV is attached with personal details removed.

My undergrad research was on reactor design and CFD, including plasma, but I don't want to study plasma or reactor-focused topics in grad school. I want to work on plant design, process simulation and techno-enviro-economic assessment of sustainable industrial systems, and I'm looking for funded MS/PhD positions in those areas.

I'd really appreciate advice on:

Which types of programs or labs fit this direction (process systems engineering, sustainable process design, energy systems, and so on)?

Which specific programs or labs would you recommend for someone with my profile?

How do I find the admissions or selection committee for a program, and who should I email first (the committee, the graduate coordinator, or individual professors)?

What should a first email to a professor include so it gets a reply?

If you know of open positions or have been through this process yourself, please comment or DM me. Thank you!

Student Solution for basic principles and calculations in Chemical Engineering

Hello everyone, I am an undergraduate student in Chemical Engineering. In two days, I have a paper and assignment submission deadline for Industrial Stoichiometry. Could anyone provide me with any guidance from the 9th edition of "Basic Principles and Calculations in Chemical Engineering"? My professor assigned me all the problems from sections 5.2 to 5.4, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Do I am cooked or can I save myself 😦.

Student Graduation Gift Ideas

My boyfriend is graduating in December and I am trying to figure out something unique to gift him.

He already has the classic cheme gifts (I ❤️ strippers shirt, Perry’s handbook, 5 billion calculators, etc.)

He talks about distillation columns a lot, so I thought maybe a model of one? But I’m having a hard time finding one and knowing what I’m looking at lol. I know he’ll be working in polymers. Is there anything I could get him that’s related to that?

Research Ideas for the deadly traps? (For a story)

Hi, I’m writing a thriller set in a hotel where the protagonist creates clever, unconventional booby traps to outsmart the villain and his men.

I’m looking for creative ideas that use things commonly found in a hotel, such as cleaning supplies, kitchen equipment, plumbing, electrical systems, or other everyday objects.

For example, imagine a large-scale version of the Elephant’s Toothpaste experiment that rapidly fills an entire corridor with foam. I’m also interested in visually spectacular traps involving environmental hazards, electrical failures, or unexpected chain reactions.

The traps should feel scientifically plausible, be inventive rather than generic, and have potentially serious consequences for the antagonists. I want ideas that are cinematic, surprising, and make the audience think, “I never would have thought of using that this way.”
