The closest an English player has come to the Ballon d’Or since then:

2011 - Wayne Rooney (5th)

2024 - Jude Bellingham (3rd)

Frank Lampard was also the runner-up in the World Player of the Year which made him only the second English player in history to do so.

People talk about 2010 Sneijder, 2007 Kaka, etc, but 2004/05 is Lampard’s best yet one of the most underrated seasons of a footballer. Goals against United, Bayern, Barcelona, two iconic goals against Bolton, 22 goals + 24 assists for club & country, playmaking, work rate, defending, set pieces, a Swiss knife of a player.
