Want to try something fun? Want to make friends with a bunch of nerds? Want to [safely] hit these new friends with swords?
Then come join the Duelists of Appalachia Historical European Martial Arts (DOA HEMA)! HEMA, "the study, reconstruction, and practice of combat systems and swordsmanship originating in Europe from the medieval period through the 19th century," is a rapidly growing activity in West Virginia - DOA HEMA invites you to grow with us here in Charleston!
Practicing with a variety of swords (namely longsword, rapier, and saber), DOA HEMA is simply a group of people passionate about learning swordsmanship. We train, we spar, we mess up, we laugh about it, and then we do it again. And you certainly don't need prior experience to join! Eventually, you'll surpass Oliver in skill (pictured above; on the floor) - but let's face it, everyone's better than Oliver~
Anyway, if you're interested in trying HEMA with us:
- Class trials are free!
- Classes are held on Wednesdays (6:00PM - 8:00PM) and Saturdays (1:00PM - 3:00PM)
- Classes are held at the McKinley Community Center (3000 Kanawha Terrace, St. Albans, WV 25177). Although classes are free, the center has a $2.00 admission fee.
- You do not need to bring your own equipment; we have plenty of loaner gear.
- At the moment, adults (18+) only. We are currently working on hosting youth classes.
- We highly suggest joining our Discord as it's our primary method of group communication.
If you have any questions or concerns (or if you'd like an invite to our Discord), feel free to reply to this post - we don't bite, although we definitely riposte~ Sorry, that was a bad sword joke...
We look forward to meeting you! Dalla Spada!
