Announcement Announcement: Framework Is Tripling Its Support for CachyOS
Hey CachyOS Community,
We have more great news to share. Framework is increasing its support for CachyOS. The donation goes from $250 per month to $10,200 per year ($850 per month), more then three times the original amount.
When Framework first started sponsoring us, they sent us a Framework Laptop 16 for optimizing our kernel and packages, and committed to a monthly donation. You can read the original announcement here:
https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/framework-sponsorship-for-cachyos/19376
Having Framework triple its support says a lot about how much they care about Linux on their hardware and about the open-source projects their users rely on. For a community-driven project like ours, this kind of steady funding makes a real difference. It helps us:
- Keep our build servers, mirrors and infrastructure running reliably
- Spend more time on kernel optimizations, packaging and hardware support
- Move closer to our long-term goal of working on CachyOS full-time
A big thank you to Framework for believing in CachyOS, and to every one of you who uses, tests, reports bugs, and donates. You keep this project going.
If you’d like to support CachyOS too, take a look at our donation page: https://wiki.cachyos.org/support/donation/
Thanks to Framework, and thanks to all of you for using CachyOS!

CachyOS Troubleshooting First Steps
CachyOS is a rolling release. Updates arrive continuously instead of in one big yearly jump, which is why you get new kernels, drivers and gaming improvements so fast. It also means that occasionally something breaks. Most of the time the cause is boring and the fix is one of the same handful of steps.
This might seem like a lot and could feel daunting. Help is available, but it requires some information.
In order for folks to help you out, you need to supply some information. Here is a step-by-step plan. Work through it in order.
How to ask so that people actually help
When you post, include:
- The four answers from Step 1
- The paste.cachyos.org link from Step 3
- What you've already tried, honestly, including any case of working with AI without understanding what you were asking, or what the AI was saying
- The Step 7 result if you got that far
Rule zero: stop running commands you don't understand
Many badly broken installs weren't broken by an update. They were broken by three or four half-applied "fixes" from Google, an old forum post, and working with AI without understanding what was being asked or what the AI was saying, stacked on top of each other. Each one silently changed something. By the time help is requested, nobody can tell which change caused which symptom, and the actual problem is buried under the attempted repairs.
So: from the moment something goes wrong, stop applying fixes found somewhere else. Work through the steps below instead.
If a pile of commands has already been pasted into a terminal, that's fine, it happens. Just mention it when asking for help and try to recall what was run. That's far more useful than pretending the system is untouched.
Step 1: Describe the problem properly
Before touching anything, write down four things:
- What exactly goes wrong? Be specific. "The screen goes black when launching Steam and the power button has to be held" is useful. "Gaming is broken" is not.
- When did it start? A date or "after last Tuesday's update" is enough.
- What happened right before it started? Was it an update, a new game, a driver change, a setting toggled, or a fix applied?
- Does it happen every time, or only sometimes?
That last question is more important than people expect. Something that fails every single time is usually a configuration or driver problem. Something that fails randomly is more often heat, power, memory, or a background process interfering.
Step 2: Terminal survival basics
A terminal is needed for some of this. It's not scary, but may look like it is.
Open one with Ctrl + Alt + T. If that does nothing, open the start menu and search for terminal. When it asks for a password, nothing appears while typing. That's deliberate. Type it and press Enter. Copy text out of the terminal with Ctrl + Shift + C, paste in with Ctrl + Shift + V. The normal Ctrl+C means "stop the running program" here. sudo at the start of a command just means "run this with administrator rights".
Step 3: Generate a log bundle
CachyOS ships a single command that collects everything a helper needs, run from the terminal (see Step 2):
sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh
It gathers hardware details, kernel messages and recent system logs, then asks whether to upload the result. Type Y. A link to paste.cachyos.org comes back. That link is the single most useful thing to include when asking for help. Post it.
For anything the bug report doesn't cover, CachyOS also has a plain "send this to a pastebin" tool. Both of these work (run in the terminal, see Step 2):
paste-cachyos ~/some-file.txtjournalctl -b -1 -p err | paste-cachyos
The second one shows errors from the previous boot, which is what's wanted after a freeze or a crash that forced a reboot.
Two things:
- Generate the log bundle before trying Step 6, because rolling back a snapshot also rolls back the logs.
- The report includes hostname, hardware IDs and full log lines, and the paste is reachable by anyone with the URL. Fine for troubleshooting, but don't paste anything sensitive.
Step 4: Update fully, then actually reboot
Open Shelly, the package manager that ships with current CachyOS, let it check for updates and install them. Older installs may have Octopi instead, which is equally fine. Or do it in the terminal (see Step 2):
sudo pacman -Syu
Then RESTART the computer. No logging out, not closing the lid but an actual restart.
A genuinely large share of "my system is broken" reports are exactly this and nothing more. On a rolling release the kernel currently running and the drivers that were just installed can fall out of step. Everything looks updated, but the running system is still working with yesterday's parts. Typical symptoms: no graphics acceleration, Steam refusing to launch, external monitors not detected, unexplained crashes, etc. A reboot resolves this class of problem. It's a common misconception that Linux never needs a restart — that's not true. The OS cannot process kernel upgrades without a restart.
There's a second reason this step comes early. If some packages were updated and others weren't, the system is probably in what's called a partial upgrade state, and arbitrary unrelated things start failing. -Syu brings everything back in line. This is also why a single package should never be installed with pacman -Sy something. Always update the whole system.
Step 5: When one specific program won't start
If the problem is a single application rather than the whole system, run it from a terminal (see Step 2) to see why it fails. Type its name and press Enter:
steam
or firefox, or whatever it is. Let it fail, then press Ctrl + C. Copy everything the terminal printed and share it, or pipe it to the pastebin tool (see Steps 2 and 3).
For Steam games specifically: right-click the game, Properties, and put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in the launch options. Run the game, let it fail, and a steam-<numbers>.log file will appear in the home folder.
Step 6: Roll the system back to before it broke
This is the feature most new CachyOS users don't realise they have.
If the system is installed on Btrfs, which is the default, CachyOS automatically takes a snapshot before and after every package install, update or removal. So when an update breaks something, there is almost always a restore point from a few minutes beforehand.
If the desktop still starts: open the start menu, search for Btrfs Assistant and open it. Go to the Snapper tab. A list of snapshots with dates will appear. Pick the most recent one from before the problem appeared, click Restore, and reboot. This GUI method works regardless of which bootloader is used.
If the desktop won't start at all: restart and tap Esc (or hold Shift) right after the machine powers on to bring up the boot menu. Look for an entry about snapshots, open it, and pick one dated before the problem. Unlike the GUI method above, this one depends on the bootloader: it works on Limine (which is a bootloader), which has been the installer default since the January 2026 release, and on recent GRUB setups. If systemd-boot was kept from an earlier install, there's no snapshot entry in the menu and a live USB will be needed, so ask for help rather than improvising.
Things worth understanding before doing this:
It only rewinds the system. Documents, photos and game saves live in the home folder and are not touched. That's reassuring, but it also means a rollback will not bring back a deleted file, and won't undo a broken configuration inside the home folder. Don't immediately re-run the update afterwards, or whatever broke it will be reinstalled. Ask first. If there's no Btrfs Assistant and no snapshot entry in the boot menu, the system is probably not on Btrfs and this section doesn't apply.
Step 7: Try the other kernel
If the boot menu lists an LTS kernel entry, boot it and see whether the problem goes away. Recent CachyOS installs ship both a current and an LTS kernel for exactly this reason.
This takes two minutes and reveals a lot. If the problem disappears on LTS, it points to a kernel or driver regression. If it's identical on both, the kernel may not be the culprit and attention moves elsewhere. Either answer narrows things down enormously, so mention the result when asking for help.
Step 8: When updates themselves fail
If the update in Step 4 refuses to run and throws an error, open CachyOS Hello, the welcome window, and look at its Troubleshooting section. It has buttons for the common package system problems: keyring trouble, a stale lock file, a corrupted cache. Try those before running anything found online. These specific failures attract a lot of bad advice that makes things considerably worse.

Desktop So I just installed and setup CachyOS + Hyprland coming from Windows Game Dev background....
Yeah so just as the title says, and I don't want to love it. But I'm, loving it.
So as I said I do Game Development primarily on Windows in Godot, Unity, and Unreal. But recently, I though I needed a break from Windows. And given the OS was already deteriorating from 3+ years of projects and work. I thought I'd just see what was I was missing and download Arch Linux.
This post is just to get feedback from the community on if I made a good choice (posting this in a CachyOS subreddit probably would sway towards good ). But also I came to ask a few questions on software and programs I should get to make Hyprland / Waybar look good, and on what I can / can't download on linux ( like adobe software )

Help [Solved] Steam detects my Steam Controller, but games don't
If Steam detects your controller and Steam Input is enabled, but games ignore it, another udev rule (like dotool) might be breaking /dev/uinput permissions.
Check /dev/uinput permissions
Steam reads your physical controller via /dev/hidraw*, but Steam Input needs read+write (rw-) access to /dev/uinput to create the virtual gamepad for games. Check it with:
getfacl /dev/uinput
If you see #effective:-w- next to your user (mask::-w-), you only have write access, not read+write, so Steam fails with:
Couldn't initialize virtual gamepad: Couldn't open /dev/uinput for writing
Find other udev rules
See which rules touch uinput:
grep -rn "uinput" /etc/udev/rules.d/ /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/ 2>/dev/null
In my case, dotool (installed as an optional dependency for the Smile emoji picker) added /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/80-dotool.rules with MODE="0620". Because 80- runs after Steam's 60-steam-input.rules, it overwrote the ACL mask and stripped read access.
The Fix
Either remove dotool, or override the rule with MODE="0660" so both work:
echo 'KERNEL=="uinput", SUBSYSTEM=="misc", GROUP="input", MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess", OPTIONS+="static_node=uinput"' | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/80-dotool.rules
sudo udevadm control --reload-rules && sudo udevadm trigger --settle /sys/devices/virtual/misc/uinput
Run getfacl /dev/uinput again to confirm mask::rw- is restored, then restart your game!
I was loosing my mind and just wanted to post this so it appears on Google in case anyone has the same problem

Review CachyOS on a ThinkPad hits different
For a very fair price, I had the chance to buy my first ThinkPad to use away from home, when visiting relatives or going on short work trips for example. It’s a 2008 T400 model, I added 8 GB of RAM (it uses DDR3, which was a pleasant surprise) and a 256 GB SSD. It came with Windows 7 installed, and I tested a few different distributions including Arch Linux itself but for someone like me who enjoyed Windows 10, CachyOS is the best option. in fact, it’s even better to be honest. I’ll likely buy another ThinkPad in the future, but as a first experience, I’m really enjoying it and it runs perfectly fast

Desktop Almost a week since I moved from Mint to CachyOS.
A couple of months ago I wanted to try CachyOS just right after buying my laptop, it didn't went pretty well, first time using a distro, and it didn't went well at all. Almost a month ago I installed Linux mint as an more friendly introduction to Linux, and recently with more experience and knowledge I wanted to give a second chance to CachyOS with KDE plasma, and I've been having a blast!
First I installed it on my laptop replacing my Mint partition, and more recently got it on my pc as my main OS, where with the dedicated graphic card I got the optimizations of CachyOS really shine.
I'll be trying new stuffs often, by now I am very satisfied with the change.
Question I woke up and my OS is doing a weird thing.
My screen is OS as if it's bigger than my visual OS. As I move my mouse, it move the screen around as if extending my OS is bigger than my visual screen. When I have my mouse at the middle of the screen, I can't seen any sides. As I move my mouse up, right, down, left, it shows everything.
What is this and how do I disable it?

Question Is the LTS Kernel a fine choice?
I want to install Cachy on my work laptop and was thinking to use the LTS Kernel to avoid the minor instabilities that the main kernel sometimes has. But is there something like compatibility issues with newest packages like KDE or something like that?
Anyone here using the LTS kernel in general? I appreciate high performance but I mostly do regular office stuff and some system/platform engineer work. Laptop is new with Intel CPU and integrated graphics.

Question Thinking of moving from Mint to Cachy. Any tips?
I've been on Linux Mint for the past 10 months or so. A bit of tinkering but otherwise an easy and pleasant ride.
Lately, though, I encountered some annoying bugs, and I started evaluating moving to Cachy. Do you guys have any tips? For desktop environment, I guess KDE Plasma is the most common choice?

Bug Report Title: GTA V Legacy stops loading textures and eventually freezes on CachyOS
Hey guys, has anyone else had this problem with GTA V Legacy on Linux?
I'm running CachyOS with a GTX 1650 ryzen 2400g, and after playing for a while, the game starts having trouble loading textures. When I'm driving around, buildings and other objects stop loading properly, and eventually the game just freezes.
I've seen a few people report similar issues on CachyOS, so I'm wondering if this is a Linux/Proton issue or something else.
I've tried lowering the graphics settings, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem.
Has anyone managed to find a proper fix for this? I'd rather not switch distros just to play GTA V.
Thanks!

Review I can't lie that Ai made my Linux experience better
There are a lot of downsides regarding ai and its regulations, however I can't deny Linux alongside Claude as a non experienced person has made my experience a lot more easier, troubleshooting problems finding fixes for any problem I encountered takes less time less energy and more effective than doing it by myself.
I say this from a former Linux user before the AI era I used the system before, but it was very hard, a problem takes a day of research and might not even work out as intended.
I am not avoiding the advancement in the recent years and their role for contributing in a better user experience either this is only my opinion.
