Recommendation Browser Recommendation Megathread - October 2026

There are constantly a zillion, repetitive "Which browser should I use?", "What browser should I use for [insert here]", "Which browser should I switch to?", "Browser X or Browser Y?", "What's your favorite browser?", "What do you think about browser X? and "What browser has feature X?" posts that are making things a mess here and making it annoying for subscribers to sort through and read other types of posts.

If you would like to keep the mess under control a little bit, instead of making a new post for questions like the above, ask in a comment in this thread instead. Then, one can choose to follow this thread if they want. Or, post in r/suggestabrowser.

Also, check out all the individual browser recommendation posts and make use of the search field for this subreddit before asking for a recommendation.

Browser RAM footprint Comparison

Post image
• Upvotes

This is not a regular browser comparison...

I like trying different browsers, but this one started with me missing Arc.

I used to be a regular Chrome user. Then I tried Arc from The Browser Company, liked it a lot, and became a hardcore user. When they discontinued Arc development in favour of Dia, I decided to switch.

I tried a few options and landed on Zen, which is open source. Stuck with it for more than a year. But with limited RAM and a lot of tabs open, the memory filled up pretty quickly.

Then I used Helium for personal projects for a couple of months. Still missed the Arc-like experience.

Kept looking and found Crest, an open-source Arc-like browser. I've just started using it.

So I thought I'd compare memory usage across these browsers.

Same 8 websites, one browser at a time, on a 16 GB Mac.

Surprisingly, Dia came out on top. Even beat Safari, Apple's native Mac browser.

Zephium is really good too. I just wish it could use my installed CLIs for agent work. Keeping an eye on the updates. Great work from Crynta.

The numbers:

- Dia: Chromium, from the makers of Arc. Lowest memory usage at 2.0 GB total. The 8 websites added only 1.2 GB.

- Zephium: Arc-style, on Safari's engine (WebKit). From 0.4 GB to 2.1 GB, close behind Dia.

- Helium: Privacy-focused Chromium with built-in ad blocking. Mid-pack at 2.2 GB.

- Safari: Apple's own browser. Lightest at the start at 0.2 GB, finished at 2.2 GB.

- Crest: A young Arc-style Chromium browser. From 0.2 GB to 2.3 GB.

- Zen: Firefox-based with an Arc-style sidebar. Heaviest throughout, from 1.1 GB to 2.7 GB.

Question Switched from Google Chrome to Firefox

Soo after using Chrome basically ever since I started using the Internet, I decided to switch firefox. The main reason for this switch is that I wanted extensions and good ad blockers on my Phone (Of course I switched both on my PC and Phone because I want them synced up and everything).

+I tried switching to Brave before but I just don't like smth about it (I can't put my finger on what exactly) and as soon as it stopped blocking ads properly on my phone I threw it into the trash since it doesn't support extensions on mobile.

+Now basically everything I've read about Firefox is positive except for the fact that some sites don't load properly on it. Is this an issue I'll run into very often or something that happens rarely.

+Also is there anything else I need to know about it?

+Basically my complete ecosystem is Google (Phone, Watch, TV, Home...) only my PC and Tablet are Windows. Will that change, away from Chrome going to have an effect on this or will I barely notice it.

Thanks for any tips and information in advance!

Netscape Navigator 9 is almost 20 years old. I'm developing my own extension for it in 2026. Would anyone still be interested?

Hi everyone!

I've been working on a project called Old Net X Migrator, an extension for Netscape Navigator 9.0.0.6, the final version released in 2007.

The project is currently at v4.0.0.0 and includes its own secure update mechanism. It's still under development, but already working quite well.

I'm also developing Old Net X, a separate Windows browser that faithfully recreates the classic Netscape Navigator 9 interface and experience, while using a modern browser engine and up-to-date security technologies. It's still under active development.

I've attached a short demonstration of the Migrator in action. I'm curious what you think about this project and whether anyone would still be interested in something like this nearly 20 years after Netscape's final release.

On the technical side, Old Net X Migrator combines legacy NPAPI (Netscape Plugin API) technology with modern components, including .NET 10, secure HTTPS updates, RSA-PSS SHA-256 signature verification, and a WebView2-based bridge. NPAPI plays a key role in integrating with the original Netscape Navigator 9, while the newer components are designed with modern security practices in mind.

Any feedback is welcome! 😁

  • Seguridad: protección frente a páginas web maliciosas, descargas peligrosas y otras amenazas.

One Browser or Five? How Do You Actually Manage Your Browsing Life? 👀

One browser or five? I'm curious how you actually manage your browsing life.

Some people stick to one browser for everything. Others use Chrome for work, Firefox for privacy, Brave for everyday browsing, or Vivaldi for its powerful tab management.

And then there are those of us who seem to collect browsers almost as enthusiastically as bookmarks. 😂

But beyond which browser is best, I'm curious about something else:

How do you actually manage everything across them?

Tabs, bookmarks, saved pages, research, ongoing projects, switching devices... Everyone seems to have their own system.

I'm conducting a small independent research survey to better understand how people use browsers, organize their online activities, and manage information across browsers and devices.

Whether you use one browser on one device, the same browser across multiple devices, or several different browsers, your perspective is equally valuable.

The survey takes about 4–6 minutes. There's no browser ranking, no sales pitch, no product promotion, and no pricing questions.

👉 Take the survey here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1N8DCDOa3OA1_gUvUmiqVCltBwR2aZN_cFWPLSB6fWCc/viewform

At the end, there's an entirely optional opportunity to express interest in testing an early product related to browsing organization. You don't need to provide an email to participate in the research.

Big thanks to the r/browsers mods for giving me permission to share this! 🙌

I’m desperately looking for a browser with tree-style tabs.

Hi everyone, does anyone know of a browser with tree-style tabs? Something like Horse Browser, for example, but that's free? Or even something like the Sidebery extension for Firefox, but that isn't so hard to set up?

Question How can I hot-reload userChrome.css and userContent.css in LibreWolf?

I'm customizing LibreWolf using userChrome.css and userContent.css. Both stylesheets use colors from my current desktop theme, so whenever I change themes, I currently have to restart the browser.

I found a JavaScript snippet that reloads a stylesheet using Firefox's nsIStyleSheetService. It works for updating browser UI colors, but I have to execute it manually in the Browser Console (Ctrl+Shift+J).

I have two questions:

Is there a way to reload userContent.css as well as userChrome.css without restarting the browser?

Is there a way to trigger the reload externally, for example with a Bash script, rather than manually running JavaScript in the Browser Console?

I've also looked into fx-config as a way to run JavaScript in the browser, but I'm concerned about its security implications.

I'd appreciate suggestions for a reliable approach or documentation on Firefox/LibreWolf's stylesheet-loading mechanisms.

It feels like 2004 again with the new browser wars.

Back in 2004 there was what was known as the "second browser war" hotting up with both Firefox and Safari trying to dislodge Internet Explorer. The fact that Mozilla made an ad reflecting that era confirmed my feelings. Now in 2026 I am seeing browser innovation everywhere with browsers switching to fortnightly updates adding more and more features and also adding even more flexibility to the web engines themselves (More CSS and JavaScript capabilities coming in Interop 2026/27). I have multiple browsers installed again since there is so much innovation that I can't keep to one browser for all my use cases. If you're a browser dev you really need to listen to users feedback and sentiment on social media to keep your browser fresh and innovative. Then there is the upcoming alpha release of Ladybird which could really add new competition to by introducing a fourth modern capable engine to the mix.

I have Edge, Vivaldi and Firefox windows open right now and I can't wait to see what happens next.
