my guy (3.5 years old) got diagnosed with epilepsy this year, and we started him on phenobarbital earlier this month when keppra still had episodes popping up every 14 days. his face has been extra itchy during the initial adjustment, a potential symptom we hadn't been aware of, and this guy is slapping hands and nosing thighs and pulling every trick in the book to get as many headscritches as possible.

y'all understand better than anybody how bossy and demanding this breed can be in the first place, so please sympathize with the early-onset carpal tunnel i'll be diagnosed with soon after pulling 40+ hour weeks at my new scratch-scratch-scratch job.

Still learning how to Border Collie.

We recently acquired a Border Collie called Benny a little more than 7 months ago, which ended up being a complete suprise since I had never had one! He was an accident because I had no idea he even was a Border Collie mix when I got him, However, I quickly learned that the dog was a little bit more than I expected, and quickly had to adjust my life. Within that span of 7 months I've created a schedule, that I would love for some advice on since I'm not sure if its the absolute best, I take him on moderate walks, some around my block and a long one around 40-ish min long (let me know if it needs to be longer) take him on a couple hikes a month, and hes found a spot he really likes on top of his crate, next to a window that I'm trying to teach him "spot," on. He has a lot of energy, something I'm still trying to counter. He is able to play by himself sometimes, like with a ball, chasing after it after pushing it. I take him to a field and throw a ball every morning, and tug of war with him a lot. I'm not sure if this is enough exercise for him though, so please let me know. The mental stimulation part was also new to me, but he gets a new bone taken from one of my local butcher shops every 2-3 days, and every other day he gets one of those puzzle balls with the treats inside. Im still learning and know I'm not doing everything right, but hes a sweet and intelligent dog and I want to give him a good life. We live in an upstairs apartment tho, so any suggestions of a backyard are a no-go.

Birthdays & Gotcha Days πŸŽ‰ Today is Ricky’s gotcha day! We pulled him a year ago from the shelter, after his previous owners surrendered him. They told the shelter he was a BC mix. Ricky is a sanctuary dog with ongoing ear infections that gets treated monthly. He’s our favorite old man! β™₯

Is this amount of shedding normal for my collie?

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some advice from fellow collie parents. I've noticed that my candy has been shedding quite a bit lately( like 10 times more than 1st pic) and I'm not sure if it's normal or something I should be concerned about.
I adopted her from the shelter like 5 months ago and she is 4 yrs old girl. After
Especially with winter approaching, will Borden collie shedding more than summer time? Should I take her to the vet? Super appreciated If someone could share your thoughts with me 😭

Training My almost 1-year-old Border Collie bit me when I tried to take stolen food from him. How concerned should I be?

I (F) have an almost 1-year-old male border collie, and something happened today that I'm not sure how to interpret.

He stole some tortillas from the kitchen counter. I chased him to get them back, and he ran into his crate. When I reached in to take the tortillas away, he bit my middle finger. He bit me once and immediately let go. He didn't growl beforehand, or at least I didn't notice any warning signs. After biting me, he continued eating the tortillas.

The bite broke the skin and caused some bleeding, although the wound looks relatively small.

He's never bitten me before, so this was completely unexpected. I'm trying to understand whether this was a one-off defensive reaction or a sign of resource guarding that I need to take seriously.

For some additional context, I can approach him while he's eating his regular kibble without any issues. We always ask him to wait before eating, and he's very good at that command. However, he has shown some food-related impulsivity with higher-value foods like ham. For example, if I'm holding a piece of ham, he'll sometimes jump up and try to snatch it directly from my hand.

I've never had an incident like this with him before, though.

I realize chasing him and reaching into his crate to take the food probably wasn't the best approach. I wasn't trying to punish him; I just wanted to get the tortillas back. Now I understand that I need to handle these situations differently.

My questions are:

- Does this sound like resource guarding, or could it have been a situational defensive reaction because he felt cornered in his crate?

- Should I be particularly concerned that he bit without any obvious warning, such as growling?

- Does his willingness to let me approach while he's eating kibble mean anything, given that he reacts differently around higher-value foods?

- What's the safest way to start addressing this behavior and prevent it from happening again?

- Would you recommend working with a qualified behavior professional after a first incident like this?

I'm not looking to excuse the bite or dismiss it because it only happened once. I want to understand what might have triggered it and how to address it appropriately before it becomes a recurring problem.
