Intro Happy blindness, awareness month

What’s up my blind brothers. How’s it going? I have no idea what to post so I’m posting something random. Also, I’ve been blind for like nine or 10 years and I learned that it was blindness awareness month in October only a few days ago.

Inspiration Elderly/ MacD mom - BLIND SIGNALING

Using ONE WHITE WHEEL as a signal for blindness for those using a rollator/ walker.

My mom is elderly and has MacD. People rushing around us while walking is actually frightening to me. She can walk but she can fall easily. I think using one white wheel on collateral type devices could transmit the idea to others.

Believe me ive already thought about how an idea like this could fail. It'd have to start at the systems level or whatever the pink ribbon people did.

What and How do y’all cook?

I am genuinely curious about what and how you all cook! I am starting to think that precise cooking like baking and baked dishes are the way to go. I used to be somewhat decent on a grill but not so much anymore. Let me know!

Blind people, low vision, bar charts challenges Blind and low-vision people: We’d love to hear your experiences with charts and graphs

Hi everyone!

We’re a small student team working on a project to make charts, graphs and diagrams more accessible for blind and low-vision people.

We have an idea for software that could make it easier to explore charts and understand the information in them, and we'd love to learn more about your experiences before taking things further.

We're especially interested in:

  • When you last encountered a chart or diagram, or even an image that was difficult to access.
  • How you managed to get the information you needed.
  • What worked well, what didn't, and what was frustrating.
  • Whether this is an occasional inconvenience or a recurring challenge.

We're exploring this as part of an early-stage research project. We're not selling anything or assuming we already know the solution. We want to understand the problem before deciding what, if anything, would be useful to develop.

If you're comfortable sharing, we'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences in the comments. We'd also be grateful if anyone would be willing to have a short, voluntary 20-30-minute interview with our team. We can arrange a phone call or use whichever accessible communication method works best for you.

Thank you for your time and for sharing your perspectives!

Could you help me with this survey?

Good day to y'all. How is all going?

I would like to ask for some of your time to fill out this little questionnaire.

It's for a project that I have, and I would like to know if it would be well received among the people it's targeted to. So please, if you're blind or have any visual impairment, could you please fill it out? And if you have a son, daughter, family member, friend, or someone you know that has also this condition, could you show and help them to fill this survey.

Thanks in advance

Technology JAWS anual home anual license?

Hi, is there no way anymore to purchase the JAWS home anual license which was around $ 100.00 to buy it online? All I see is a license for businesses but not the cheaper license. Bought it online years ago but it is about to expire.

Discussion Wet floor signs

You know how wet floor signs are our nemesis? You catch them with your cane and they go flying!

Well today I was walking along the pavement on my way to the supermarket and I found a barrier between a van and the building line. So I walk into the road and stick my head around the side of the van to listen for traffic and decide its safe enough to start walking in the parking road to get around the obstruction. A man then “helpfully” tells me I am walking in the road 😂 yep thats the idea mate, they’ve blocked the path.

Anyway, I pass two vans before finding an opening I can get between and instead of using a barrier like on the others side I quickly find myself in what I can only describe is a sea of wet floor signs. They are falling all over the place! Every swing and I am knocking another down! Gosh what a pain in the backside. I tried to find my way around them while another person is telling me there’s a wet floor signs there, yeah no shit!

But its not like they were in a line or anything, just seemingly scattered about with gaps in between.

I can laugh at it now but it felt like pure chaos in that moment!

Does anyone else have any funny or embarrassing wet floor sign adventures?

Technology VoiceOver back to normal in iOS 27.2... sort of.

Heads up for anyone like myself that has been experiencing a buggy VoiceOver since installing iOS 27, I think it's mostly back to normal. The issue with the Siri voices speech rate is one of the issues appears mostly resolved on my end. Also, I'm not noticing any hiccups or choppy popping sounds. The one issue I have run into is the mispronunciation of some words that weren't there before like words with'apostrophes', like "you're" and "they're". If anyone notices something I'm missing let me know so I can test it out on my end as well, using an iPhone 17 Pro, And mind you, I'm only using American Siri voice 4.

Discussion My therapist thinks people treat me differently because of "cues" I give off. Has anyone else dealt with this?

I recently started seeing a therapist, which was a big move for me. It took me a long time to get there, so I went in really wanting it to work.

He's very big on responsibility. He wants his patients to take control of their lives and own the work of improving things. I understand that, and in a lot of areas I agree with him. There are things in my life I can change, and I'd like to.

But when I told him about the difficulties I have in my social life and relationships, he said something that's stuck with me ever since: "Maybe the world doesn't antagonize you because you have a disability." He also suggested that maybe I'm giving off certain cues that make people treat me differently.

I can't stop thinking about it. Part of me wonders if he has a point, because I don't want to be someone who blames everything on being blind. Then I think about how people actually act around me, and it feels like he's telling me I imagined all of it. That's the part that hurts. I went to him hoping to be understood, and I came away feeling like the problem had been handed back to me.

I've booked a session for this week to tell him how that comment landed, and I'm honestly terrified. I'm scared he'll think I'm Just enjoying playing the victim and throwing a pity party for myself, which I think he already does to a certain degree.

So I'd really like to hear from people here. Has a therapist ever downplayed the way people treat you because of your blindness? Did you bring it up with them, and how did it go? Did things get better, or did you end up finding someone else?

Thanks for reading. It means a lot to be able to ask people who actually get it.

Discussion How do facial expressions work for you guys?

I'll try and explain what I mean by this.

I'm 23 years old and I'm visually impaired, but I don't have enough vision to like look at myself in the mirror or anything. A few weeks ago, it was brought to my attention that apparently my whole face moves when I talk, and… I did not know this. I thought my mouth was the only thing that moves, but apparently no, that's not correct. And apparently everyone is like this, at least most people are anyway.

I don't know how to deliberately control my facial expressions, my face just kind of does whatever it wants. School pictures were a nightmare back in the day. Nobody has really taught me anything about it, and I'm just kind of confused, and now I'm realizing that there's this whole world to explore.

I guess I have a few questions.

Have you guys learned how to control your facial movements? I can open and close my eyes, and I can talk just fine, but I don't really know how to do anything else that other people seem to know how to do.

Do you have any understanding of what people talk about when they mention different expressions or movements or anything, because I don't.

Is it worth it to learn about this? And how would I even go about learning? All my friends are blind in real life, and they can't really help me with this because I asked them and they have no clue either. I'm working on meeting more people with Vision.

I'm just asking all this because I'm so curious. This whole concept is so strange to me, because I can't really feel what my face is doing, I've just never paid attention to it.

IPhone keyboard for low vision

Hi all, I’m an O&M Specialist and TVI and hate the low contrast keyboards on ios devices. I just found a keyboard app that allows you to change the size and color /contrast of the keys and keyboard. It’s technically built for iPhones but I installed it on a student’s iPad and it made a huge difference for them.

EFKey is the app and has a week free trial for the full features so you can try it out. It costs about $14 (one time fee) to purchase if you like it.

I am in no way affiliated with this app, just thought I’d spread the word for anyone interested because I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time.

Blind and sighted siblings. How do you handle visual activities as a family?

Our first child was born blind, and we’re expecting our second, who will be sighted. They’ll be about 19 months apart.

I’ve been wondering how other families navigate activities that rely heavily on vision, like movies, theatre or the circus.

Of course, we want to include both children in everything possible, but what if our sighted child loves going to the cinema? Should we always offer our blind daughter the same experience and let her decide whether she enjoys it, even without audio description?

I’d especially love to hear from blind adults who grew up with sighted siblings. Were you included in these kinds of activities? Did you enjoy them anyway, or did you sometimes feel left out when your sibling did something without you?

I realise I might be looking at this from a very sighted perspective, which is exactly why I’m asking. 😅I want both children to have their own interests and experiences without either feeling excluded.

Obrigada!!

Technology OMG, my NVDA is terrible!

Okay, let’s start from the beginning. I updated NVDA to the latest version, and my speech engine—which I use in Brazilian Portuguese, my native language—is completely broken.

I’ve had to switch to a horrible-sounding voice, and I’m trying to use the Sonata voices for now, but for some reason, those aren’t working either.

I’m autistic, and this is causing me to have a meltdown right now. Is anyone else experiencing this?

How can I fix the issue with Sonata, considering I’ve already downloaded the C++ [redistributable] as requested on the website?

Feeling some kind of way

Do you all ever think that life like this isn't worth it? It's been an off and on thought I have had over the last couple of years. It's hard to go from seeing to legally blind and trying to find thngs to make life enjoyable. I feel so depressed.

Edit: whoever reported me, I appreciate that you thought enough to do that, but I'm not suicidal. It just gets hard to see the point sometimes.

want to learn german. help?

Hi. I wish to learn german, I am very much a beginner, just A1 right now. any resources or tips are appreciated, a lot of resources put translations in texts, like most of youtube cources like from german pod 101 or the other one I cant remember the name of. I tried nico's weg, but its not a lot accessible when I opened some lessons to read. I prefer audio over text in this instance, as to help with pronounsiation. I just got my hands on coffee break german.

Accessibility 100% Blind Paintball!

Ahoy there! I myself am 100% sighted, while my wife is 100% blind (double prosthetics). For reference, she could see until 23 and is 41. So she has a lot of visual memory. She's going through a bit of a midlife crisis on her blindness past 6 months when she's previously been very confident. She's having a lot of trouble with not having a social network and more friends nearby that will hang out with her. So she feels it's because she's a burden to be friends with. It breaks my heart. So I've been working with her to try to find activities where she can grow a larger social network, get us outside, and have fun!

Our latest venture has been paintball! I love it and took her for the first time today and it went pretty well. The venue was extremely accommodating. We found out on the target range that she has a crazy ability if I shot at a target, she could shoot a second later and either hit it spot on or very close. It was incredible.

The problem came with actual games. With my ADHD I felt this would also be a great activity to help me work on my immediate directional communication with her, but def didnt go well today. The first game she said she was having a panic attic because it was hard to breathe through the mask after we climbed up to a second floor to defend a base. And once the firing started, she had no clue or reference on anything. So many shots made it impossible for her to figure out what was going on. I got her calmed down and next game went quite a bit better.

So, first we know if she wants to do this we need to get her a mask that is custom and comfortable for her needs. But I think we also need a community! Are there any other blind paintball players her? Suggestions on how to make the experience better and ideas for communicating? We decided to play as one person and I found a double carabiner bungie we attached ourselves together with. She thinks it would also be better with other blind players and smaller teams. So here's me reaching out to ya'll for any interest, info, or ideas!

Dont want her to give up, cause she definitely acknowledged loving the community and environment. But she just had no reference or idea of what was happening ever.

Technology Meta Glasses for my mom

My mom is being offered a trail of Meta glasses through Helen Keller Services.

She has Retinitis Pigmentosa. Her diagnosis was in her late 30s. She is in her 80s now. I understand that the progression of her illness has been slower than for some, but now she has 2% field of vision with color changes and a graph paper overlay on what she sees.

It seems like the Meta Glass es might make a big difference for her. And the Be My Eyes feature would be an additional benefit.

Does anyone have personal experience with these glasses (and Be My Eyes) for themselves or for a family member and can give the pros and cons of their experience so my mom knows the truth of what she can expect? Thanks.
